The analytic movement advertised its ‘linguistic turn’ as a radical break from the two-thousand-year-old substance tradition. But this is an illusion. On the fundamental level of ontology, there is enough reformulation and presupposition of traditional ‘no entity without identity’ themes to analogize Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, and Quine to Aristotle as paradigmatic of modified realism. Thus the pace of ontology is glacial. Frege and Russell, not Wittgenstein and Quine, emerge as the true analytic progenitors of ‘no entity without identity,’ offering between them at least twenty-nine private language arguments and sixty-four ‘no entity without identity’ theories.

Teissier] The main ideas of the proof of resolution of singularities of complex-analytic spaces presented here were developed by Heisuke Hironaka in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Since then, a number of proofs, all inspired by Hironaka’s general approach, have appeared, the validity of some of them extending beyond the complex analytic case. The proof has now been so streamlined that, although it was seen 50 years ago as one of the most difficult proofs produced by mathematics, it can now be the subject of an advanced university course. Yet, far from being of historical interest only, this long-awaited book will be very rewarding for any mathematician interested in singularity theory. Rather than a proof of a canonical or algorithmic resolution of singularities, what is presented is in fact a masterly study of the infinitely near "worst" singular points of a complex analytic space obtained by successive "permissible" blowing ups and of the way to tame them using certain subspaces of the ambient space. This taming proves by an induction on the dimension that there exist finite sequences of permissible blowing ups at the end of which the worst infinitely near points have disappeared, and this is essentially enough to obtain resolution of singularities. Hironaka’s ideas for resolution of singularities appear here in a purified and geometric form, in part because of the need to overcome the globalization problems appearing in complex analytic geometry.

By modern analytic mechanics we mean the classical mechanics of today, that is, the mechanics that has proven particularly useful in understanding the universe as we experience it from the solar system, to particle accelerators, to rocket motion. The mathematical and numerical techniques that are part of this mechanics that we present are those that we have found to be particularly productive in our work in the subject. The balance of topics in this book is somewhat different from previous texts. We emphasize the use of phase space to describe the dynamics of a system and to have a qualitative understanding of nonlinear systems. We incorporate exercises that are to be done using a computer to solve linear and nonlinear problems and to have a graphical representation of the results. While analytic solutions of physics problems are to be prefer. red, it is not always possible to find them for all problems. When that happens, techniques other than analysis must be brought to bear on the problem. In many cases numerical treatments are useful in generating solutions, and with these solutions often come new insights. These insights can sometimes be used for making further analytic progress, and often the process is iterative. Thus the ability to use a computer to solve problems is one of the tools of the modern physicist. Just as analytic problem-solving enhances the student’s understanding of physics, so will using the computer enhance his or her appreciation of the subject.
