Born in 1903, and until his death in 2003, Bob Hope was the only entertainer to achieve top-rated success in every major mass-entertainment medium, from vaudeville to television and everything in between. He virtually invented modern stand-up comedy. His tours to entertain US troops and patriotic radio broadcasts, along with his all-American, brash-but-cowardly movie character, helped to ease the nation’s jitters during the stressful days of World War II. He helped redefine the very notion of what it means to be a star: a savvy businessman, pioneer of the brand extension (churning out books, writing a newspaper column, hosting a golf tournament), and public-spirited entertainer whose Christmas military tours and tireless work for charity set the standard for public service in Hollywood. But he became a polarizing figure during the Vietnam War, and the audiobook sheds new light on his close relationship with President Richard Nixon during those embattled years.

America Last The Right’s Century-Long Romance with Foreign Dictators [Audiobook]

Free Download Jacob Heilbrunn, Kent Klineman (Narrator), "America Last: The Right’s Century-Long Romance with Foreign Dictators"
English | ASIN: B0CTBCG3R6 | 2024 | MP3@64 kbps | ~08:23:00 | 238 MB
In America Last, Jacob Heilbrunn, a highly respected observer of the American Right, demonstrates that the infatuation of American conservatives with foreign dictators is not a new phenomenon.
It dates to WWI, when some conservatives, enthralled with Kaiser Wilhelm II, openly rooted for him to defeat the forces of democracy. In the 1920s and 1930s, this affinity became even more pronounced as Hitler and Mussolini attracted a variety of American admirers. Throughout the Cold War, the Right evinced a fondness for autocrats such as Francisco Franco and Augusto Pinochet, while some conservatives wrote apologias for the Third Reich and for apartheid South Africa. The habit of mind is not really about foreign policy, however. As Heilbrunn argues, the Right is drawn to what it perceives as the impressive strength of foreign dictators, precisely because it sees them as models of how to fight against liberalism and progressivism domestically.

English | ASIN: B0CS6T88XT | 2024 | 2 hours and 46 minutes | M4B@128 kbps | 152 MB
Author: Stephanie Insley Hershinow, The Great Courses
Narrator: Stephanie Insley Hershinow

The rituals and pageantry of courtship in the 19th century can seem foreign to us today. Some of us may look back and see a more romantic age, while others will see a minefield of strict rules and stuffy protocol. Either way you look at it, it was worlds away from what dating is in the 21st century. From coming-out parties and neighborhood balls to the rules of letter writing and marriage proposals, there were a lot of etiquette rules to observe if you wanted to find love-and, even more important, to secure your future through marriage. Novels like Pride and Prejudice and period dramas like Bridgerton may give us glimpses into the nature of 19th-century romance, but what about the fuller historical and social context? In the six lessons of A Courtly History: Romance in the 19th Century, Professor Stephanie Insley Hershinow gives you a detailed look at the complex and ever-evolving rules of romance in 19th-century Britain.

Slavery and Rebellion in Second-Century BC Sicily From Bellum Servile to Sicilia Capta

Free Download Peter Morton, "Slavery and Rebellion in Second-Century BC Sicily: From Bellum Servile to Sicilia Capta "
English | ISBN: 139951573X | 2023 | 248 pages | PDF | 12 MB
This is the first book-length study in English dedicated to an exploration of the events traditionally known as the two Sicilian Slave Wars. The second-century BC revolts are commonly included among the largest slave uprisings in world history and are considered key milestones in the timeline of Roman slavery. This book offers a re-examination of the so-called Slave Wars from the perspectives of the rebels and argues that these occurrences should be understood not as slave revolts but as rebellions ignited by the socio-economic and political difficulties caused by the Roman-backed status quo on Sicily.

Women, Work, and Clothes in the Eighteenth-Century Novel

Free Download Chloe Wigston Smith, "Women, Work, and Clothes in the Eighteenth-Century Novel"
English | ISBN: 1107035007 | 2013 | 269 pages | PDF | 8 MB
This groundbreaking study examines the vexed and unstable relations between the eighteenth-century novel and the material world. Rather than exploring dress’s transformative potential, it charts the novel’s vibrant engagement with ordinary clothes in its bid to establish new ways of articulating identity and market itself as a durable genre. In a world in which print culture and textile manufacturing traded technologies, and paper was made of rags, the novel, by contrast, resisted the rhetorical and aesthetic links between dress and expression, style and sentiment. Chloe Wigston Smith shows how fiction exploited women’s work with clothing – through stealing, sex work, service, stitching, and the stage – in order to revise and reshape material culture within its pages. Her book explores a diverse group of authors, including Jane Barker, Jonathan Swift, Daniel Defoe, Eliza Haywood, Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Charlotte Lennox, John Cleland, Frances Burney and Mary Robinson.
