The Histone Code and Beyond New Approaches to Cancer Therapy

Free Download The Histone Code and Beyond: New Approaches to Cancer Therapy by S. L. Berger, O. Nakanishi, B. Haendler

Methylation of DNA at cytosine residues as well as post-translational modifications of histones, including phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation and ubiquitylation, contribute to the epigenetic information carried by chromatin. These changes play an important role in the regulation of gene expression by modulating the access of regulatory factors to the DNA. The use of a combination of biochemical, genetic and structural approaches has allowed demonstration of the role of chromatin structure in transcriptional control. The structure of nucleosomes has been elucidated and enzymes involved in DNA or histone modifications have been extensively characterized. Since deregulation of epigenetic marks has been reported in many cancers, a better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms bears the promise that new drug targets may soon be found. The newest developments in this quickly developing field are presented in this book.

Source Code Optimization Techniques for Data Flow Dominated Embedded Software

Free Download Source Code Optimization Techniques for Data Flow Dominated Embedded Software by Heiko Falk , Peter Marwedel
English | PDF | 2004 | 234 Pages | ISBN : 1402028229 | 21.6 MB
This book focuses on source-to-source code transformations that remove addressing-related overhead present in most multimedia or signal processing application programs. This approach is complementary to existing compiler technology. What is particularly attractive about the transformation flow pre sented here is that its behavior is nearly independent of the target processor platform and the underlying compiler. Hence, the different source code trans formations developed here lead to impressive performance improvements on most existing processor architecture styles, ranging from RISCs like ARM7 or MIPS over Superscalars like Intel-Pentium, PowerPC, DEC-Alpha, Sun and HP, to VLIW DSPs like TI C6x and Philips TriMedia. The source code did not have to be modified between processors to obtain these results. Apart from the performance improvements, the estimated energy is also significantly reduced for a given application run. These results were not obtained for academic codes but for realistic and rep resentative applications, all selected from the multimedia domain. That shows the industrial relevance and importance of this research. At the same time, the scientific novelty and quality of the contributions have lead to several excellent papers that have been published in internationally renowned conferences like e. g. DATE. This book is hence of interest for academic researchers, both because of the overall description of the methodology and related work context and for the detailed descriptions of the compilation techniques and algorithms.

The past decade has seen cloud and infrastructure as code move out of shadow IT and startups and into the mainstream. Many organizations rushed to adopt new technologies as part of their transformation into digital businesses, creating a sprawl of unmaintainable infrastructure codebases. Now, there is a need to consolidate cloud-based systems into mature foundations for sustainable growth.

Eating the Other Translations of the Culinary Code

Free Download Simona Stano, "Eating the Other: Translations of the Culinary Code"
English | ISBN: 144387793X | 2015 | 297 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Food represents an unalienable component of everyday life, encompassing different spheres and moments. What is more, in contemporary societies, migration, travel, and communication incessantly expose local food identities to global food alterities, activating interesting processes of transformation that continuously reshape and redefine such identities and alterities. Ethnic restaurants fill up the streets we walk, while in many city markets and supermarkets local products are increasingly complemented with spices, vegetables, and other foods required for the preparation of exotic dishes. Mass and new media constantly provide exposure to previously unknown foods, while fusion cuisines have become increasingly popular all over the world. But what happens to food and food-related habits, practices, and meanings when they are carried from one foodsphere to another? What are the main elements involved in such dynamics? And which theoretical and methodological approaches can help in understanding such processes? These are the main issues addressed by this book, which explores both the functioning logics and the tangible effects of one of the most important characteristics of present-day societies: eating the Other.

Code-switching in Bilingual Children

Free Download Code-switching in Bilingual Children by Katja F. Cantone
English | PDF (True) | 2007 | 288 Pages | ISBN : 1402057830 | 3.1 MB
This study investigates the issue of code-switching in young bilingual children, in particular, intra-sentential switches, that is, mixing within an utterance. The data come from five bilingual Italian/German ch- dren (age 1;8 to 5 years), who grew up in Hamburg, Germany. The term bilingual is used in order to describe a person who has been exposed to both languages from birth on (Meisel 1989:20). Hence, this work is placed within the research field of Bilingual First Language Acquisition. The present book discusses three main issues. The first assumption concerns language mixing in young bilingual children. Differently from former studies on mixing in children, I claim that bilingual children’s mixed utterances should be analyzed in the same way as adult mixing. I further argue that child grammar is organized in the same way as adult grammar. Therefore, a grammatical development should not explain a different type of switching. In fact, I claim that there is no relation between the development of grammar in child speech and the quality of language mixing. The data rather show that language mixing depends on an individual choice, that is, either children mix throughout or they do not. Following Cantone & Müller (2005), slightly higher rates at the beginning of language production might be due to a performance factor. Since the operation Select has no full practice to pick items according to the language context yet, some errors might occur as long as fluency has not been reached.
