EU Counter-Terrorism and Intelligence A Critical Assessment

Javier Argomaniz, "EU Counter-Terrorism and Intelligence: A Critical Assessment"
English | ISBN: 113829487X | 2017 | 238 pages | EPUB | 598 KB
The Treaty on the European Union stipulates that one of the key objectives of the Union is to provide citizens with a high level of safety within an Area of Freedom, Security and Justice. Given that the fight against terrorism is a prominent aspect of this general objective, it is remarkable that, in spite of its political relevance and decade-long history, it has only relatively recently received due attention in the academic community. Yet an analysis of the successes and failures of the EU’s involvement in this field is imperative and this is a particularly pertinent moment to take stock of progress.

Encounters at the Counter The Organization of Shop Interactions

Encounters at the Counter: The Organization of Shop Interactions
English | 2023 | ISBN: 100921599X | 297 Pages | PDF | 10 MB
Bringing together a diverse collection of studies from a team of international scholars, this pioneering volume focuses on interactions in shops, exploring the dynamics of conversation between sellers and customers. Beginning with the emergence of a ‘need’ for a product before the request to a seller is actually made, all the way through to the payment phase, it explores the rich and deeply methodical practices employed by customers and sellers as they go about the apparently mundane work of buying and selling small items. It looks at how seller and customer interact both verbally, and by means of manipulating the material objects involved, across a range of different kinds of purchase. Providing new insights into multimodal human interaction and the organisation of the commercial activity, it aims to bring about a new understanding of the fundamental ways in which economic value, possession and ownership is achieved.

Whiteness in Academia Counter-Stories of Betrayal and Resistance

Whiteness in Academia: Counter-Stories of Betrayal and Resistance By John Preston
2013 | 115 Pages | ISBN: 144384473X | PDF | 1 MB
Even in those areas of academia which one would consider to be most resistant to white domination (such as critical race theory and multicultural education), both covert and overt racial oppression are apparent. What is the role of white academics in these fields in creating racial oppression? Is there any escape from white supremacy and do white academics have any role in resisting it or are they always complicit? In this book, fictional tropes are used to consider the role of whiteness in academia and in wider struggles against racial oppression. The volume consists of several ‘counter stories’, each one of which critiques an aspect of whiteness and uses themes from genres such as science fiction, detective fiction and ‘fan fiction’ to explore power and the contradictions associated with it. Whiteness in Academia will be useful for those researching race, debating the role of academics in social change and examining research methods in education. Of particular interest to academics, researchers and activists, the volume provides a text which opens up new ways of thinking about both their positionality and politics.

In Leviathan’s Belly Essays for a Counter-Revolutionary Time

Darko Suvin, "In Leviathan’s Belly: Essays for a Counter-Revolutionary Time"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1434445194 | PDF | pages: 364 | 1.7 mb
In eleven incisive, biting essays, Marxist philosopher Darko Suvin suggests that "capitalism (and all of us in Leviathan’s belly) stands today in the presence of Yeats’s rough beast advancing toward Bethlehem, that finance capitalism is not simply a stage but a recurrent ‘Autumn’ signal of transition from one world regime of accumulation and domination to another; it signals the destruction of the old regime and creation of a ‘new’ one." And to bolster his argument, Suvin points to the economic and social chaos creeping and growing through western society, bank failures, riots, unrest, loss of private capital, loss of middle-class jobs, increase in drug and alcohol abuse, proliferation of guns and other weapons in society, failure of our school systems, inability of police to provide security, and political revolution in less-developed states. The author stresses the need to provide "universal guaranteed income sufficient to modestly live on for all adults working 35 hours a week, and a stress on [providing decent] education and health." And to fund these simple measures: "Just pay trillions to people instead of banks and the military." Suvin’s intelligent analysis and commentary will open many eyes that have been prejudiced against socialist thought by the rise of right-wing politicians, and demonstrate quite clearly to the modern reader that there IS another perspective worth considering.
