William Faulkner Day by Day

English | October 12, 2022 | ISBN: 1496835018 | True EPUB | 344 pages | 5.2 MB
William Faulkner has been the topic of numerous biographies, papers, and international attention. Yet there are no collected resources providing a comprehensive scope of Faulkner’s life and work before now. William Faulkner Day by Day provides unique insight into the daily life of one of America’s favorite writers. Beyond biography, this book is an effort to recover the diurnal Faulkner, to write in the present tense about past events as if they are happening now. More importantly, this book is concerned with more than the writer’s life. Instead, it examines the whole man―the daily, mundane, profound, life changing, and everything in between.

Things That Make Us Smart (William Patrick Book)

Free Download Things That Make Us Smart (William Patrick Book) by Donald A. Norman
English | April 21, 1994 | ISBN: 0201626950 | 304 pages | MOBI | 3.02 Mb
In Things That Make Us Smart, Donald A. Norman explores the complex interaction between human thought and the technology it creates, arguing for the development of machines that fit our minds, rather than minds that must conform to the machine.Humans have always worked with objects to extend our cognitive powers, from counting on our fingers to designing massive supercomputers. But advanced technology does more than merely assist with thought and memory—the machines we create begin to shape how we think and, at times, even what we value. Norman, in exploring this complex relationship between humans and machines, gives us the first steps towards demanding a person-centered redesign of the machines that surround our lives.

William Morris’ Position between Art and Politics

Free Download Grzegorz Zinkiewicz, "William Morris’ Position between Art and Politics"
English | ISBN: 1443852007 | 2016 | 260 pages | PDF | 1048 KB
This volume re-evaluates the position of William Morris regarding contemporary perspectives on his artistic and political endeavours. Special emphasis is placed on the concepts and territories that lie in-between, both literally and metaphorically. This in-between-ess is the most remarkable quality of Morris, and secures him a unique position among his contemporaries, as well as inspiring new generations of scholars. Paradoxically, however, this aspect also contributes to a certain marginalization of Morris in studies devoted to Eminent Victorians. Instead of speaking of ruptures, gaps or lacunas, the point of view adopted here explores the undefined terrenes situated between art and politics, viewing them as vantage points and departure planes which cement Morriss universe. At the same time, the book also argues that this universe has always existed in its specific shape and form, while the poetic upholster, as Morris was ironically labelled, only discovered and explored different points on the map of a space that could have no limits and boundaries. The book offers new insights and avenues to supplement existing scholarship on Morris, including spatiotemporal aspects of his work and the relationship between art and politics.

Thirsty is the gripping tale of Los Angeles’ epic battles for water, the larger-than-life characters that shaped a city’s destiny, and the man-made tragedy that killed 400 and forever changed the way water would be harnessed and allocated.

The Siege of Fort William Henry A Year on the Northeastern Frontier [Audiobook]

English | ASIN: B0CQ3VYKMY | 2023 | M4B@64 kbps | ~09:55:00 | 297 MB
The opening years of the French and Indian War were disastrous for the British. Hindered by quarrelsome provincial councils, incompetent generals, and the redcoats’ inability to adapt to wilderness warfare, Britain was losing the war. Learning that most of Britain’s military resources were allocated to Louisbourg, the French launched a campaign along the weakened frontier. French Commander Louis-Joseph de Montcalm and his American Indian allies laid siege to Fort William Henry; Monro could not hold out and was forced to surrender. As part of the terms, the British regiment, colonial militia, and their camp followers would be allowed safe passage to nearby Fort Edward. The French watched in horror, however, as their Indian allies attacked the British column after it left the fort, an episode that sparked outrage and changed the tactics of the war.
Seen through the eyes of participants such as Louis Antoine de Bougainville, a scholarly young aide-de-camp, Jabez Fitch, an amiable Connecticut sergeant, and Kisensik, a proud Nipissing chief whose father once met Louis XIV in the marbled halls of Versailles, The Siege of Fort William Henry uses contemporary newspaper reports, official documents, private letters, and published memoirs to bring the narrative to life.
