Comic Book Nation The Transformation of Youth Culture in America [Audiobook]

As American as jazz or rock and roll, comic books have been central in the nation’s popular culture since Superman’s 1938 debut in Action Comics #1. In Comic Book Nation, Bradford W. Wright offers an engaging, illuminating, and often provocative history of the comic book industry within the context of twentieth-century American society.
From Batman’s Depression-era battles against corrupt local politicians and Captain America’s one-man war against Nazi Germany to Iron Man’s Cold War exploits in Vietnam and Spider-Man’s confrontations with student protestors and drug use in the early 1970s, comic books have continually reflected the national mood, as Wright’s imaginative reading of thousands of titles makes clear. In every genre, Wright finds that writers and illustrators used the medium to address a variety of serious issues.
Wright’s lively study also focuses on the role comic books played in transforming children and adolescents into consumers; the efforts of parents, politicians, religious organizations, civic groups, and child psychologists to link juvenile delinquency to comic books and impose censorship; and the changing economics of comic book publishing over the course of the century. Comic Book Nation is at once a serious study of popular culture and an entertaining look at an enduring American art form.

Risk, Resilience, and Positive Youth Development: Developing Effective Community Programs for High-Risk Youth: Lessons from the Denver Bridge Project describes an approach to developing and testing effective community-based programs for at-risk children and youth. This volume shows how elements of risk and resilience, positive youth development, and organizational collaboration are used to develop a comprehensive intervention framework called the Integrated Prevention and Early Intervention (IPEI) Model. The IPEI is then applied to a community-based after-school program called the Bridge Project to illustrate how an integrated intervention framework can be used to prevent childhood and adolescent problems and improve academic achievement. Findings from an evaluation of the Denver Bridge Project intervention components are presented, and recommendations for advancing policy and practice for high-risk youth in community-based programs are described. Readers will follow the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and assessment of the Bridge Project guided by first-person perspectives from program participants who share their stories throughout the book.

Youth violence is not a unique phenomenon, and, in fact, youth have been plagued with challenges throughout the centuries that have placed them at risk of violent tendencies. These challenges include poverty, inadequate healthcare, limited educational opportunities, exploitation, gender inequality, substance abuse, mental health concerns, homelessness, gang involvement, and family dysfunction. Further, these challenges are not unique to youth within the United States; however, these experiences may differ in terms of chronicity, intensity, and impact. In all youth, these challenges create stress and trauma that compromise well-being. This book explores the challenges that youth experience, and provides context to better understand the factors related, and contributing, to those issues. The chapters describing realistic and practical violence prevention and remediation programs, which are both innovative and effective, are particularly unique. Additionally, there are a number of chapters that discuss the latest technological advances in helping young people, as well as evidence-based assessments and evaluations to help those who work with young people understand the needs of at-risk youth.
