From Modes to Keys in Early Modern Music Theory addresses one of the broadest and most elusive open topics in music history: the transition from the Renaissance modes to the major and minor keys of the high Baroque. The system Glarean proposed in his 1547 Dodecachordon comprised twelve modes at two transposition levels; the scheme J.S. Bach used to order The Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722 featured two modes at twelve transposition levels. What took place in between?

From Marx to Warner

English | ISBN: 1443898805 | 2017 | 580 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The book offers an in-depth analysis of several important theories of social class and stratification, both past and present. This critique is underpinned by a single, coherent analytic framework organised around the notion of ownership. This original approach allows the book to offer alternative treatments of the issues dealt with by the thinkers discussed here. The central argument here is that there are only two classical theories of social class, namely those developed by Marx and Weber, and this clear systematisation of the main attributes of approaches to class and stratification makes it possible to see that many theories traditionally considered as class ones refer, in fact, to social stratification.

From Majority Rule to Inclusive Politics

Free Download From Majority Rule to Inclusive Politics by Peter Emerson
English | PDF | 2016 | 167 Pages | ISBN : 3319234994 | 4.1 MB
This book discusses voting procedures in collective decision-making. Drawing on well-established election processes from all over the world, the author presents a voting procedure that allows for the speedy but fair election of a proportional, all-party coalition. The methodology – a matrix vote – is accurate, robust and ethno-color blind. In the vote, the counting procedure encourages all concerned to cross the gender as well as any party and/or sectarian divides. While in the resulting executive each party will be represented fairly and, at best, with the consensus of parliament, every minister will be the one most suited to his/her new portfolio. By using preferential voting and thus achieving consensus, the matrix vote will be fundamental to the resolution of conflicts.

From Huhugam to Hohokam Heritage and Archaeology in the American Southwest

Free Download J. Brett Hill, "From Huhugam to Hohokam: Heritage and Archaeology in the American Southwest "
English | ISBN: 1498593240 | 2020 | 250 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
In From Huhugam to Hohokam: Heritage and Archaeology in the American Southwest, J. Brett Hill examines the history of O’odham heritage as it was recorded at the beginning of European conquest. A parallel history of scientific exploration is then traced forward to produce intricate models of the coming and going of ancient peoples. Throughout this history, Native accounts were routinely dismissed as an inferior kind of knowledge. More recently, though, a revolutionary change has taken hold in archaeology as Native insights and premises are integrated into scientific thought. Integration was once suspected of undermining basic principles of knowledge, but J. Brett Hill contends that it provides a deeper and more accurate sense of the connection between living and ancient people. Hill combines three decades of experience in archaeology with a liberal arts perspective to produce something for readers at all levels in the fields of anthropology, Native American studies, history, museum studies, and other heritage disciplines

From Holomorphic Functions to Complex Manifolds

Free Download From Holomorphic Functions to Complex Manifolds by Klaus Fritzsche , Hans Grauert
English | PDF (True) | 2002 | 406 Pages | ISBN : 0387953957 | 32.1 MB
The aim of this book is to give an understandable introduction to the the ory of complex manifolds. With very few exceptions we give complete proofs. Many examples and figures along with quite a few exercises are included. Our intent is to familiarize the reader with the most important branches and methods in complex analysis of several variables and to do this as simply as possible. Therefore, the abstract concepts involved with sheaves, coherence, and higher-dimensional cohomology are avoided. Only elementary methods such as power series, holomorphic vector bundles, and one-dimensional co cycles are used. Nevertheless, deep results can be proved, for example the Remmert-Stein theorem for analytic sets, finiteness theorems for spaces of cross sections in holomorphic vector bundles, and the solution of the Levi problem. The first chapter deals with holomorphic functions defined in open sub sets of the space en. Many of the well-known properties of holomorphic functions of one variable, such as the Cauchy integral formula or the maxi mum principle, can be applied directly to obtain corresponding properties of holomorphic functions of several variables. Furthermore, certain properties of differentiable functions of several variables, such as the implicit and inverse function theorems, extend easily to holomorphic functions.

From Empire to the World Migrant London and Paris in the Cinema

English | ISBN: 0748656464 | 2015 | 256 pages | PDF | 7 MB
The study of globalization in cinema assumes many guises, from the exploration of global cinematic cities to the burgeoning ‘world cinema turn’ within film studies, which addresses the global nature of film production, exhibition and distribution. In this ambitious new study, Malini Guha draws together these two distinctly different ways of thinking about the cinema, interrogating representations of global London and Paris as migrant cinematic cities, featuring the arrival, settlement and departure of migrant figures from the decline of imperial rule to the global present.

From Classical Analysis to Analysis on Fractals A Tribute to Robert Strichartz, Volume 1

Over the course of his distinguished career, Robert Strichartz (1943-2021) had a substantial impact on the field of analysis with his deep, original results in classical harmonic, functional, and spectral analysis, and in the newly developed analysis on fractals. This is the first volume of a tribute to his work and legacy, featuring chapters that reflect his mathematical interests, written by his colleagues and friends. An introductory chapter summarizes his broad and varied mathematical work and highlights his profound contributions as a mathematical mentor. The remaining articles are grouped into three sections – functional and harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces, analysis on manifolds, and analysis on fractals – and explore Strichartz’ contributions to these areas, as well as some of the latest developments.

From Chiefs to Landlords Social and Economic Change in the Western Highlands & Islands

Free Download Robert A. Dodgshon, "From Chiefs to Landlords: Social and Economic Change in the Western Highlands & Islands"
English | ISBN: 0748610340 | | 320 pages | PDF | 29 MB
This new approach to Highland history before the Clearances draws attention to little-studied yet important economic and social processes within the Highland clan system and argues that we should consider the problems of traditional Highland society, economy and environment together. Exploring how the different aspects of the clan system – chiefs and kinsmen, landlords and tenants, farming systems, production strategies and marketing – changed between the 16th-18th centuries, it shows how the character and ideology of clans and chiefdoms are inextricably part of the twin problems of socio-political control and food production. Shifting the emphasis away from depictions of Highland society as lawless and disorganised, this is a welcome antidote to the many romanticised views of pre-Clearance society. Prize Winner! Honorable Mention – Frank Watson Scottish History Prize 1999

From Biafra to the Niger Delta Conflict Memory, Ethnicity, and the State in Nigeria

Free Download Edlyne Eze Anugwom, "From Biafra to the Niger Delta Conflict: Memory, Ethnicity, and the State in Nigeria"
English | ISBN: 1498577989 | 2018 | 248 pages | EPUB | 1162 KB
This book analyzes the influence of memory on social conflict as well as the role of ethnicity in state formation and governance in Nigeria. It examines the nexus between the Nigerian civil war and the conflict in the oil rich Niger Delta against the background of memory and ethnicization of the state. Ultimately, both social conflicts, though separated by decades, profit from shared memories in a largely ethnicized state structure. Nigeria emerges as a centrifugal state characterized by bias in resource distribution and concentration of power in the center. These forces create the perception of marginalization and sponsor enduring memory of a biased state not helped by failure of the state to ensure closure of the civil war.
