Morals and Manners among Negro Americans

Free Download W. E. Burghardt Du Bois, Augustus Dill, Robert A. Wortham, "Morals and Manners among Negro Americans"
English | 2010 | pages: 210 | ISBN: 0739116703, 073911669X | EPUB | 4,2 mb
Morals and Manners among Negro Americans is the sequel to W.E.B. Du Bois’ The Negro Church. This 1914 study is the last Atlanta University Conference volume to be edited or coedited by Du Bois and is based on a national survey addressing the then current state of morals and manners within the African American community. A case study of the Black Church in Atlanta and an extensive discussion of crime are included also. The national survey addressed such topics as good manners, sound morals, habits of cleanliness, personal honesty, home life, rearing of children, activities for young people, the care of the elderly, church ministries, and an evaluation of recent progress. While the original conference volume included actual lists of the evaluators’ responses by topic and classified by state, the data were not analyzed. This reissue of the classic sociological study includes an extensive introduction based on Robert Wortham’s content analysis of the survey responses. The results of this analysis are presented in tabular form and discussed, and a statistical appendix summarizing the raw data for each topic by state is provided. This new edition presents readers with an opportunity to evaluate general and regional trends in the evaluators’ perception of the state of morals and manners within the African American community at the beginning of the twentieth century.

On May 14, 1960, the East-West Center was officially created by the Congress of the United States. As a part of the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of this event, a symposium was held on May 19, 1980, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. The subject "China and the Nations of the Pacific" was selected because the theme for the anniversary year of the East-West Center had been established as "Building a Pacific Community." It has been suggested that international mechanisms for coming to grips with such interdependencies in the Pacific region as trade, investment, food, energy, and mineral commodities are inadequate. In response to such suggestions, hearings have been held in both houses of the Congress of the United States on the idea of a Pacific community. This symposium was organized as part of that general discussion. The contributors’ hope that the papers presented here will further stimulate thought and debate on the problems of the Pacific region.

Mostly Straight Sexual Fluidity Among Men

Free Download Mostly Straight: Sexual Fluidity Among Men by Ritch C. Savin-Williams
English | November 13, 2017 | ISBN: 067497638X | True EPUB | 256 pages | 0.99 MB
Most of us assume that sexuality is fixed: either you’re straight, gay, or bisexual. Yet an increasing number of young men today say that those categories are too rigid. They are, they insist, "mostly straight." They’re straight, but they feel a slight but enduring romantic or sexual desire for men. To the uninitiated, this may not make sense. How can a man be "mostly" straight? Ritch Savin-Williams introduces us to this new world by bringing us the stories of young men who consider themselves to be mostly straight or sexually fluid. By hearing about their lives, we discover a radically new way of understanding sexual and romantic development that upends what we thought we knew about men.

God Among the Bunkers The Orthodox Church in Albania Under Enver Hoxha

Free Download Chris Moorey, "God Among the Bunkers: The Orthodox Church in Albania Under Enver Hoxha"
English | ISBN: 1515248658 | 2015 | 168 pages | AZW3 | 363 KB
During communist rule in Albania, Enver Hoxha had 750,000 concrete bunkers built around the country as look out posts and gun emplacements against a largely imaginary threat of invasion. This worked out as one bunker for every four of the population. During the same period, he attempted to completely eliminate all religious practice and belief in the country. Based on thorough research and personal interviews with survivors, "God Among the Bunkers" describes this persecution and the remarkable stories of courage and resistance among believers. The main emphasis is on the Orthodox Church, but the book also draws examples from the Roman Catholic Church and the Bektashi and Sunni Muslim faiths. An extraordinary story that deserves to be more widely known.

Antidepressants Therapy and Risk of Suicide Among Patients With Major Depressive Disorders

Free Download Maurizio Pompili, "Antidepressants Therapy and Risk of Suicide Among Patients With Major Depressive Disorders "
English | ISBN: 1617283789 | 2011 | 48 pages | PDF | 26 MB
Most cases of suicide (81%-95%) in the general population involve psychiatric illnesses, nearly half of which (48.5%) are mood disorders. Internationally, the overall average suicide rate has been rising gradually over the past half-century, with increases reported in about half of nations, mainly among men, and moderate decreases found in another half, including in Northern Europe and North America. This book reviews whether the use of antidepressants is associated with benefits in terms of completed or attempted suicide, whether the increasing use of SSRIs is associated with benefits in terms of decreased rates of suicide with the aim of generating evidence-based suggestions for clinicians.

Pauline Baptism among the Mysteries Ritual Messages and the Promise of Initiation

Free Download Donghyun Jeong, "Pauline Baptism among the Mysteries: Ritual Messages and the Promise of Initiation "
English | ISBN: 3110791013 | 2023 | 350 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
This monograph provides an alternative model for looking at the old question about Paul and the mysteries in a new light. Specifically, this study compares rituals-baptism in the Pauline communities and the initiation rituals of the mysteries-through the lens of cultural anthropology and the sociology of religion. Three research questions lead the project: What benefits does each initiation ritual promise its participants? What are the underlying messages or structures that guarantee the efficacy of those rituals? How and to what extent is the initiation ritual connected to the participants’ cognition and ethics beyond initiation itself? Taking those questions as the analytical framework, this study substantiates two points: first, in terms of ritual messages, baptism in the Pauline communities is a ritual analogous to mystery initiation, and second, Paul is an innovative interpreter of ritual who recalibrates the messages of preexisting rituals for his theological and ethical program, seeking to radically extend the implications of initiation to the embodied life of every Christ-believer. Students and scholars of New Testament, early Christianity, classics, and ritual studies will benefit from engaging this volume.
