Apostles of Disunion Southern Secession Commissioners and the Causes of the Civil War (A Nation Divided)

Free Download Apostles of Disunion: Southern Secession Commissioners and the Causes of the Civil War (A Nation Divided) By Charles B. Dew
2017 | 168 Pages | ISBN: 0813939437 | PDF | 1 MB
Charles Dew’s Apostles of Disunion has established itself as a modern classic and an indispensable account of the Southern states’ secession from the Union. Addressing topics still hotly debated among historians and the public at large more than a century and a half after the Civil War, the book offers a compelling and clearly substantiated argument that slavery and race were at the heart of our great national crisis. The fifteen years since the original publication of Apostles of Disunion have seen an intensification of debates surrounding the Confederate flag and Civil War monuments. In a powerful new afterword to this anniversary edition, Dew situates the book in relation to these recent controversies and factors in the role of vast financial interests tied to the internal slave trade in pushing Virginia and other upper South states toward secession and war.

The Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles in Armenian

Free Download Valentina Calzolari, "The Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles in Armenian "
English | ISBN: 9042946210 | 2022 | 284 pages | PDF | 2 MB
After an overview of the Christian Apocrypha in Armenian, the volume starts with three essays dealing with the apostles of Armenia, Thaddaeus and Bartholomew. The cycle of Thaddaeus merges with the traditions related to Addai, King Abgar, and the old Christianity of Edessa, while the account of the discovery of the relics of Bartholomew in Armenia is connected with the bishop Marutha of Maypherkat. The second part of the volume includes four essays on Thecla and on the different paradigms of holiness (virgin, martyr, preacher, and patroness of Nicaean orthodoxy) that she embodies in the ancient Armenian historiographical literature. The last two chapters are devoted to the Armenian translations of the Martyrdom of Andrew and the Martyrdom of Philip, which contain some Encratite passages absent from the Greek. All these essays stress the importance of the apocryphal writings as evidence for a better understanding of ancient Christianity in Armenia in its different facets and in its relations with the neighbouring Christian communities.

Credo Meditations on the Apostles’ Creed

Free Download Credo: Meditations on the Apostles’ Creed By Hans Urs von Balthasar
2000 | 112 Pages | ISBN: 0898708036 | EPUB | 1 MB
In the twelve months before his sudden death, Hans Urs von Balthasar had been writing a series of reflections on the twelve articles of the Apostles’ Creed. These texts, which are undoubtedly among the last things he wrote, take on the character of a legacy, a spiritual testament. For they amount in their extraordinary compactness and depth to a little "summa" of his theology. What he had set out in detail in numerous books over five decades, he summarizes here in contemplative plainness and simplicity. All the characteristics that make von Balthasar’s work so distinctive and valuable are to be found here: breadth of vision, loveliness of style, and an intuitive-contemporary passion that allows him to "pray intellectually and think ‘cordially’."In his warm and extensive introduction to the book, Medard Kehl speaks of von Balthasar’s "unclouded, almost childlike joy in the richness and beauty of the Mystery" of the threefold God, which "is evidenced in his interpretation of the creed."
