The sexual constitution of political authority the trials of same-sex desire

Free Download The sexual constitution of political authority : the "trials" of same-sex desire By Zanghellini, Aleardo
2015 | 216 Pages | ISBN: 041582740X | PDF | 7 MB
While there is no shortage of studies addressing the state’s regulation of the sexual, research into the ways in which the sexual governs the state and its attributes is still in its infancy. The Sexual Constitution of Political Authority argues that there are good reasons to suppose that our understandings of state power quiver with erotic undercurrents. The book maintains, more specifically, that the relationship between ideas of political authority and male same-sex desire is especially fraught. Through a series of case studies where a statesman’s same-sex desire was put on trial (either literally or metaphorically) as a problem for the good exercise of public powers, the book shows the resilience and adaptability of cultural beliefs in the incompatibility between public office and male same-sex desire. Some of the case studies analysed are familiar ground for both political/constitutional history and the history of sexuality. The Sexual Constitution of Political Authority argues, however, that only by systematically reading questions of institutional politics and questions of sexuality through each other will we have access to the most interesting insights that a study of these trials can generate. Whether they involve obscure public officials or iconic rulers such as Hadrian and James I, these compelling fragments of queer history reveal that the disavowal of male same-sex desire has been, and partly remains, central to mainstream understandings of political authority.

Navigating Religious Authority in Muslim Societies Islamist Movements and the Challenge of Globalisation

Free Download Asif Mohiuddin, "Navigating Religious Authority in Muslim Societies: Islamist Movements and the Challenge of Globalisation"
English | ISBN: 3031448243 | 2023 | 291 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Globalisation stands as an indispensable lens through which to analyse current cultural, political, and social transformations. This prevailing paradigm, acknowledged by its advocates and critics, profoundly shapes our environment. Within this global landscape, Islam’s position is noteworthy―often perceived as rejecting globalisation and its secular underpinnings. This book offers a perspective of the global resurgence of religion in general and the revival of Islam in particular as crucial features of globalisation. Furthermore, the book deeply explores how Islamist groups strategically challenge religious authority, utilising social media and the internet to reshape their spheres of influence. By exploring these dynamics, the book aims to provide comprehensive insights into the interplay between Islamist strategies, digital platforms, and religious institutions within our interconnected world.

Gender and Muslim Constructions of Exegetical Authority A Rereading of the Classical Genre of Qur’an Commentary

Free Download Gender and Muslim Constructions of Exegetical Authority: A Rereading of the Classical Genre of Qur’an Commentary By Aisha Geissinger
2015 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 9004269355 | PDF | 2 MB
A number of classical Sunnī Quran commentaries quote several different types of exegetical materials attributed to a few female figures from the first century A.H/seventh century C.E.-āthār, ḥadīths, legal opinions and variant readings, as well as lines of poetry. In Gender and Muslim Constructions of Exegetical Authority, Aisha Geissinger provides a comprehensive introduction to such quotations, and offers an analysis of their place and significance within the pre-modern genre of Quran commentary, demonstrating that key hermeneutical concepts in classical quranic exegesis (tafsīr) are gendered. Bringing together materials which have not previously been examined in detail and utilising gender as a lens through which to study them, this work provides a new approach to the study of pre-modern tafsīr.Biographical noteAisha Geissinger, Ph.D. (2008) in Religious Studies, University of Toronto, is an Assistant Professor at Carleton University (Canada). Geissinger’s research is located at the intersection of the study of the Qurʾān and its exegesis, the Ḥadīth literature, and gender.ReadershipAnyone interested in the history and development of quranic exegesis (tafsīr), or concerned with gender and constructions of religious authority in Muslim history. Evangelicals & Scripture Tradition, Authority and Hermeneutics

Free Download Vincent E. Bacote, Laura Miguelez Quay, Dennis L. Okholm, "Evangelicals & Scripture: Tradition, Authority and Hermeneutics"
English | 2004 | ISBN: 0830827757 | EPUB | pages: 245 | 0.3 mb
By definition, a high view of Scripture inheres in evangelicalism. However, there does not seem to be a uniform way to articulate an evangelical doctrine of Scripture. Taking up the challenge, Vincent Bacote, Laura Miguélez and Dennis Okholm present twelve essays that explore in depth the meaning of an evangelical doctrine of Scripture that takes seriously both the human and divine dimensions of the Bible. Selected from the presentations made at the 2001 Wheaton Theology Conference, the essays approach this vital subject from three directions. Stanley J. Grenz, Thomas Buchan, Bruce L. McCormack and Donald W. Dayton consider the history of evangelical thinking on the nature of Scripture. John J. Brogan, Kent Sparks, J. Daniel Hays and Richard L. Schultz address the nature of biblical authority. Bruce Ellis Benson, John R. Franke, Daniel J. Treier and David Alan Williams explore the challenge of hermeneutics, especially as it relates to interpreting Scripture in a postmodern context. Together these essays provide a window into current evangelical scholarship on the doctrine of Scripture and also advance the dialogue about how best to construe our faith in the Word of God, living and written, that informs not only the belief but also the practice of the church.

In the wake of the Great Depression, one of Franklin Roosevelt’s most successful New Deal programs was the formation of the Tennessee Valley Authority, a federal government owned corporation created in 1933 to revitalize the Tennessee River Valley. The TVA provided navigation, flood control, electricity generation, strategic materials for national defense, economic development, unemployment relief, and an overall improvement of living conditions in this once-impoverished rural area. The TVA Architects Office built a huge number of structures during the late 1930s and early 1940s, including the many dams that dramatically altered life in the Tennessee River Valley. Its design agenda was comprehensive, addressing all scales of design from door handles to landscape with equal dedication. The Tennessee Valley Authority: Design and Persuasion

The Lily’s Tongue Figure and Authority in Kierkegaard’s Lily Discourses

Free Download Frances Maughan-brown, "The Lily’s Tongue: Figure and Authority in Kierkegaard’s Lily Discourses "
English | ISBN: 1438476337 | 2019 | 186 pages | PDF | 1367 KB
How do texts speak with authority? That is the question at the heart of Kierkegaard’s theory and practice of "indirect communication." None of Kierkegaard’s texts respond to this question more concisely and powerfully than the four discourses he wrote about the lily in the Gospel. The Lily’s Tongue is a nuanced, sustained reading of these Lily Discourses. Kierkegaard takes the lilies as authoritative, rather than merely "figural" or "metaphorical." This book is a careful exploration of what Kierkegaard means by this authority.
