Born in 1585, Catalina de Erauso led one of the most wildly fantastic lives of any woman in history. Refusing to be regimented into the quiet habits of a nun’s life, she escaped from a Basque convent at age fourteen dressed as a man, and continuing her deception, ventured to Peru and Chile as a soldier in the Spanish army. After mistakenly killing her own brother in a duel, she roamed the Andean highlands, becoming a gambler and a killer, and always just evading the grasp of the law. Distinguished for her fighting skills and cursed with a quick temper, Catalina de Erauso spent much of her life balancing precariously between valor and villainy.

1996 | 372 Pages | ISBN: 9027236348 | PDF | 7 MB
Questions related to the origin and history of the Basque language spark considerable interest, since it is the only surviving pre-Indo-European language in western Europe. However, until now, there was no readily available source in English providing answers to these questions or giving an overview of past and current research in this area. This book is intended to partly fill this void. The book contains both state-of-the-art papers which summarize our knowledge about particular areas of Basque historical linguistics, and articles presenting new hypotheses and points of view based on hard evidence and careful analysis. All contributors to this volume have demonstrated expertise in the topic within Basque historical linguistics that their chapter addresses. Two classical articles by the late Luis Michelena are included in English translation. In addition, the book includes studies on diachronic phonology, morphology and syntax. The relation of Basque to other languages is also investigated in a couple of chapters.

This collaboration between the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, and the Master’s in Feminist and Gender Studies of the University of the Basque Country is the first English monograph on LGBTQI+ issues in relation to the Basque case. It addresses the existing void surrounding historical, legal, and political issues concerning this important topic, but it also tackles social and cultural aspects as well as problems and challenges of the LGBTQI+ collective in the Basque Country today. This book explores legislative issues, the mission of social movements and of their followers, and a historical perspective on lesbianism and homosexuality in the European context. Additionally, an attempt to understand bodies beyond binary categories has been made, and an examination of the cultural expressions through literary analysis. It is a snapshot, combining the perspectives of the academic researchers and the actual activists. It is, in essence, an invitation to continue to discuss, research, and write about matters concerning LGBTQI+.
