How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization

English | 2005 | ISBN: B000AWGX5Y | Format: MP3 / Bitrate: 128 Kbps / 7 hours + EPUB | 442 Mb
Ask a college student today what he knows about the Catholic Church and his answer might come down to one word: "corruption". But that one word should be "civilization".
Western civilization has given us modern science, the wealth of free-market economics, the security of law, a sense of human rights and freedom, charity as a virtue, splendid art and music, philosophy grounded in reason, and innumerable other gifts we take for granted. But what is the ultimate source of these gifts? Best-selling author and professor Thomas E. Woods, Jr., provides the answer: the Catholic Church.
No institution has done more to shape Western civilization than the two-thousand-year-old Catholic Church and in ways that many of us have forgotten or never known. Woods’ book is essential reading for recovering this lost truth.

The Tyranny of the Banal On the Renewal of Catholic Moral Theology

Free Download David Deane, "The Tyranny of the Banal: On the Renewal of Catholic Moral Theology "
English | ISBN: 1978700814 | 2023 | 290 pages | EPUB, PDF | 583 KB + 3 MB
Catholic positions on contested moral issues are rejected by the majority in the secular West and are increasingly rejected by Catholics themselves. In this book, David Deane argues that there are two main reasons for this. First, the dominance of secular approaches deprives Catholic positions of their claim to coherence. Second, the Catholic positions, Deane shows, have lost contact with the theology on which they were originally based. In response, Deane undertakes a deconstruction of the dominant secular positions, and seeks to restore Catholic positions to their theological roots. The result of this is a moral theology reconnected with the Trinitarian understanding of God and God’s relationship with the world. Restored to its doctrinal foundations, the moral theology that Deane offers is more coherent, more beautiful, and more convincing than has been found in Catholic moral discourse for centuries.

Muslim and Catholic Responses to HIV and AIDS in Kenya

In the capital city of Nairobi, Kenya, African Catholic and Sunni Muslim leaders addressing HIV and AIDS are faced with a unique challenge. On the one hand, they are called to attend to the spiritual wellbeing of the infected individual; on the other hand, they are increasingly charged with serving as the stewards of the physical bodies of those negatively affected by such a physiologically debilitating and social stigmatized disease through certain identifiable interreligious traditions common to both faiths.

Accountability and Leadership in the Catholic Church

Free Download Brian Dive, "Accountability and Leadership in the Catholic Church"
English | ISBN: 1527542726 | 2020 | 220 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The Catholic Church is many things: a sign and instrument of Christ; a gathering of flawed human beings; and a mystery. It is, in some ways, unlike any other organization in the world, yet it is, nevertheless, an organization: as St John Henry Newman observed, it has developed according to the laws under which combinations of men develop. There are better and worse ways of structuring, and leading, organizations. Over the past century, a body of knowledge has developed about how to create healthy, effective organizations. This volume applies this knowledge to the churchin a way that will be of great interest to all who wish to understand the church, as well as to students and practitioners of organizational developmentand identifies flaws in its organizational life: the ways in which its leaders are selected, trained, supported, and directed, must improve. Options for constructive change are outlined. Things can, and should, change, if the church is to show the world the light within it.

Losing a Kingdom, Gaining the World The Catholic Church in the Age of Revolution and Democracy [Audiobook]

English | ASIN: B0CLSDZXNQ | 2023 | 18 hours and 29 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 529 MB
Author: Ambrogio A. Caiani
Narrator: Mark Elstob

An ambitious, authoritative history of the Roman Catholic Church in the modern age. Despite its many crises, especially in Western Europe, there are still 1.2 billion Catholics in the world and the Church remains a powerful, controversial and defiantly archaic institution. After the French Revolution and the democratic rebellions of 1848, the Church retreated, especially under Pius IX, into a fortress of unreason, denouncing almost every aspect of modern life, including liberalism and socialism. The Pope proclaimed his infallibility; the cult of the Virgin Mary and her apparitions to semi-illiterate shepherds became articles of faith; the Vatican refused all accommodation with the modern state, until a disastrous series of concordats with fascist states in the 1930s. In Losing a Kingdom, Gaining the World, Dr. Ambrogio A. Caiani narrates the epic, fascinating, entertaining and horrifying history of the Roman Catholic Church. It is an account of the Church’s fraught encounter with modernity in all its forms, from representative democracy and the nation state to science, literature and secular culture.

Catholic Literature and Film Incarnational Love and Suffering

Free Download Nancy Enright, "Catholic Literature and Film: Incarnational Love and Suffering"
English | ISBN: 1498541666 | 2016 | 172 pages | EPUB | 1361 KB
Catholic Literature and Film: Incarnational Love and Suffering is meant to be considered as a work of literary criticism, not film adaptation studies. In it, the author explores six literary works dealing with Catholic themes and the film versions of these works. The discussion of the films is at the service of analyzing the texts. Underlying all the discussions is an incarnational, sacramental view of the texts, which links to my interpretation of the film versions of them. Catholic and actually any Christian interpretation of literature or film or any other art form is rooted in an iconic and sacramental understanding of imagery as a means of conveying the sacred. Catholic spirituality lends itself to this sort of approach, as it is deeply rooted in the ability to see sacred things through physical means. A key sub-theme is romantic love in connection with salvation, which Charles Williams, one of the "Inklings" (the group of British writers, including J.R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, who met and discussed literature and theology), calls "the theology of romantic love," as well as the sub-themes of redemptive suffering, and grace. My interest in the book is not an analysis of cinematography, per se, but on the films as vehicles for religious ideas.

Answering Orthodoxy – A Catholic Response to Attacks from the East

Free Download Michael Lofton, "Answering Orthodoxy – A Catholic Response to Attacks from the East"
English | ISBN: 168357334X | 2023 | 198 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
What if there’s a better Christian religion than Catholicism? One that has true apostolic doctrines, a more beautiful and ancient liturgy, and freedom from all that "pope" baggage―and valid sacraments, too. That’s what apologists for Eastern Orthodoxy are selling. In a time of uncertainty and confusion for many Catholics, Orthodox challenges to the Church’s history, teaching, worship, and authority structure have been drawing Catholics away in hope of greener pastures in the East. But those thinking of jumping off the barque of Peter toward the siren song of Eastern Orthodoxy―and for Protestants who’d like Catholicism’s historical pedigree without all the mess―need to think twice. In Answering Orthodoxy, Michael Lofton (Reason & Theology Podcast) shows why, with a thorough and critical refutation of Orthodox attacks against the Church. Formerly Eastern Orthodox himself, Lofton has the knowledge and experience to uncover the flaws in the most common anti-Catholic arguments from Orthodoxy’s top advocates. From intricate doctrinal debates to the historical flubs and foibles of the popes, right on down to the basic understandings (and misunderstandings) of the sacraments Catholics and Orthodox share but don’t always agree on, Answering Orthodoxy shows where Orthodox attacks go wrong. In so doing, he not only strengthens Catholic conviction in the truth of the Faith, but also shows the Orthodox that there’s not as much distance between them and the Church as they might think, and unity with Rome might be closer than ever. Whether you’re frustrated with today’s Church and find yourself attracted to Orthodoxy’s antiquity, beauty, and religious rigor, or you’re just looking to learn the best Catholic responses to Orthodox arguments, Answering Orthodoxy will equip and edify you.

Informed Consent, Proxy Consent, and Catholic Bioethics For the Good of the Subject

Free Download Grzegorz Mazur O.P., "Informed Consent, Proxy Consent, and Catholic Bioethics: For the Good of the Subject"
English | 2011 | pages: 248 | ISBN: 9400721951, 9400737157 | PDF | 2,1 mb
This work offers a comprehensive understanding rooted in Catholic anthropology and moral theory of the meaning and limits of informed and proxy consent to experimentation on human subjects. In particular, it seeks to articulate the rationale for proxy consent in both therapeutic and nontherapeutic settings. As to the former, the book proposes that the Golden Rule, recognizing the basic inclinations of human nature toward objective goods perfective of human persons, should underpin the notion of proxy consent to experimentation on humans. As to the latter, an additional scrutiny of the amount of risk involved is necessary, since the risk-benefit ratio frequently invoked to justify higher-risk therapeutic research does not exist in its nontherapeutic counterpart. This study discusses a number of possible solutions to this question and develops a position that builds upon the objective notion of the human good.
