English | PDF | 1988 | 395 Pages | ISBN : 0306429144 | 36.6 MB
This volume contains tutorial papers from the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Instabilities and Chaos in Quantum Optics", held at the "Il Ciocco" Conference Center, Castelvecchio Pascoli, Lucca, Italy, June 28-July 7, 1987. The title of the volume is designated Instabilities and Chaos in Quantum Optics II, because of the nearly coincident publication of a collection of articles on research in this field edited by F.T. Arecchi and R.G. Harrison Instabilities and Chaos in Quantum Optics, (Springer, Berlin, 1987) 1. That volume provides more detailed information about some of these topics. Together they will serve as a comprehensive and tutorial pair of companion volumes. This school was directed by Prof. Massimo Inguscio, of the Department of Physics, University of Naples, Naples, Italy to whom we express our gratitude on behalf of all lecturers and students. The Scientific Advisory Committee consisted of N.B. Abraham of Bryn Mawr College; F.T. Arecchi of the National Institute of Optics in Florence and the University of Florence, and L.A. Lugiato of the Politechnic Institute of Torino. The school continues the long tradition of Europhysics Summer Schools in Quantum Electronics which have provided instruction and training for young researchers and advanced students working in this field for almost twenty years.

Semiconductor Lasers Stability, Instability and Chaos

Free Download Semiconductor Lasers: Stability, Instability and Chaos by Junji Ohtsubo
English | PDF | 488 Pages | ISBN : 3642091709 | 8.9 MB
Preface for the second edition Chaos research in laser physics, especially in semiconductor lasers, has – veloped further even after completion of the ?rst edition of this book in the late summer of 2004, and it is still growing rapidly. For example, various forms of chaotic dynamics have been applied in newly developed semic- ductor lasers, such as in vertical-cavitysurface-emitting semiconductor lasers and broad-area semiconductor lasers. Chaotic dynamics plays an important role in these new lasers, even for their solitary oscillations, and control of the dynamics is currently an important issue for practical applications. – other signi?cant advance has been made in the area of chaotic optical secure communications. Chaotic secure communications using existing public opt- al communications links have been tested, and successful results have been obtained. In this second edition, I have ?lled in the gaps in the explanation of chaotic laser dynamics in the previous edition, and I have also added s- eral important topics that have been developed recently. In particular, a new chapter on laser stabilizations has been added, and a number of misprints in the ?rst edition have been corrected. I believe this book will be of interest not only to researchers in the ?eld of laser chaos, but also to those working in nonlinear science and technology. Hamamatsu, Spring 2007 Junji Ohtsubo Preface The aim of this book is the description of the state of the art of chaos research in semiconductor lasers and their applications, and the future perspective of this feld.

Mixing Chaos and Turbulence

Free Download Mixing: Chaos and Turbulence by H. Chaté, E. Villermaux, J.-M. Chomaz
English | PDF | 1999 | 395 Pages | ISBN : 0306461951 | 43.8 MB
Mixing may be thought of as the operation by which a system evolves from one state of simplicity (initial segregation) to another state of simplicity (complete uniformity). Between these two extremes, complex patterns emerge and die. Questions naturally arise- how can the geometry of complex patterns be characterised, what is the time scale of the process, what structures are involved in the flow?

Critical Phenomena in Natural Sciences Chaos, Fractals, Selforganization and Disorder Concepts and Tools

Free Download Critical Phenomena in Natural Sciences: Chaos, Fractals, Selforganization and Disorder: Concepts and Tools by Didier Sornette
English | PDF | 2006 | 538 Pages | ISBN : 3540308822 | 6.8 MB
Concepts, methods and techniques of statistical physics in the study of correlated, as well as uncorrelated, phenomena are being applied ever increasingly in the natural sciences, biology and economics in an attempt to understand and model the large variability and risks of phenomena. This is the first textbook written by a well-known expert that provides a modern up-to-date introduction for workers outside statistical physics. The emphasis of the book is on a clear understanding of concepts and methods, while it also provides the tools that can be of immediate use in applications. Although this book evolved out of a course for graduate students, it will be of great interest to researchers and engineers, as well as to post-docs in geophysics and meteorology.

Order and Chaos in Dynamical Astronomy

Free Download Order and Chaos in Dynamical Astronomy by George Contopoulos
English | PDF | 2002 | 633 Pages | ISBN : 3540433600 | 57.8 MB
There have been many books on Dynamical Astronomy up to now. Many are devoted to Celestial Mechanics, but there are also several books on Stellar and Galactic Dynamics. The first books on stellar dynamics dealt mainly with the statistics of stellar motions (e. g. Smart’s "Stellar Dynamics" (1938), or Trumpler and Weaver’s "Statistical Astronomy" (1953)). A classical book in this field is Chandrasekhar’s "Principles of Stellar Dynamics" (1942) that dealt mainly with the time of relaxation, the solutions of Liouville’s equation, and the dynamics of clusters. In the Dover edition of this book (1960) an extended Appendix was added, containing the statistical mechanics of stellar systems, a quite "modern" subject at that time. The need for a classroom book was covered for several years by the book of Mihalas and Routly "Galactic Astronomy" (1969).

Hamiltonian Chaos Beyond the KAM Theory

Free Download Hamiltonian Chaos Beyond the KAM Theory: Dedicated to George M. Zaslavsky (1935-2008) by Albert C. J. Luo, Valentin Afraimovich
English | PDF | 2010 | 312 Pages | ISBN : 3642127177 | 33.8 MB
"Hamiltonian Chaos Beyond the KAM Theory: Dedicated to George M. Zaslavsky (1935-2008)" covers the recent developments and advances in the theory and application of Hamiltonian chaos in nonlinear Hamiltonian systems. The book is dedicated to Dr. George Zaslavsky, who was one of three founders of the theory of Hamiltonian chaos. Each chapter in this book was written by well-established scientists in the field of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems. The development presented in this book goes beyond the KAM theory, and the onset and disappearance of chaos in the stochastic and resonant layers of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems are predicted analytically, instead of qualitatively. The book is intended for researchers in the field of nonlinear dynamics in mathematics, physics and engineering. Dr. Albert C.J. Luo is a Professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, USA. Dr. Valentin Afraimovich is a Professor at San Luis Potosi University, Mexico.

Deterministic Chaos in General Relativity

Nonlinear dynamical systems play an important role in a number of disciplines. The physical, biological, economic and even sociological worlds are comprised of com plex nonlinear systems that cannot be broken down into the behavior of their con stituents and then reassembled to form the whole. The lack of a superposition principle in such systems has challenged researchers to use a variety of analytic and numerical methods in attempts to understand the interesting nonlinear interactions that occur in the World around us. General relativity is a nonlinear dynamical theory par excellence. Only recently has the nonlinear evolution of the gravitational field described by the theory been tackled through the use of methods used in other disciplines to study the importance of time dependent nonlinearities. The complexity of the equations of general relativity has been (and still remains) a major hurdle in the formulation of concrete mathematical concepts. In the past the imposition of a high degree of symmetry has allowed the construction of exact solutions to the Einstein equations. However, most of those solutions are nonphysical and of those that do have a physical significance, many are often highly idealized or time independent.
