Sexuality, Gender And Religion In Contemporary Discourses Theology, Society And Education

Free Download Fahimah Ulfat, "Sexuality, Gender And Religion In Contemporary Discourses: Theology, Society And Education"
English | ISBN: 365841944X | 2023 | 152 pages | PDF | 2 MB
One of the most current issues occupying both public and academic discourse is sexuality and the related issues of sexual self-determination, gender order, and homophobia. Religion has a significant role to play in this discourse. This centrality of religion is evident not only in the question of moral concepts, but also in questions of the understanding of the body and gender. In this context, it should be emphasized that religion – or, more precisely, a particular interpretation of the religious – can have both a conflict-promoting and an emancipatory effect. If one wants to conceptualize a contemporary theological understanding, then it is necessary to receive medical, psychological as well as social and cultural science research. The anthology aims to thematize these debates and to broaden the view for the multi-layered processes of change taking place in the discourses.

Secularism(s) in Contemporary France Law, Policy, and Religious Diversity

Free Download David Koussens, "Secularism(s) in Contemporary France: Law, Policy, and Religious Diversity "
English | ISBN: 3031182308 | 2023 | 187 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The increasing visibility of Islam in France and the vehemence of debates about it have often contributed to narrow public perceptions of secularism to a simplistic antireligious crusade, a misleading image disseminated by the media and politicians alike. Taking the opposite stand, this book embarks on a comprehensive effort to document the multiple areas in which French secularism plays out – in debates over "cults," places of worship, chaplaincy services in public institutions, the recognition of associations of worship, and more -, outlining and analizing the legal paths favored by the state in the regulation of religious diversity. While Islam has undoubtedly contributed to the reshaping of French secularism in the last decades, the book moves beyond what has come to be known as the "Muslim Question" to look at the multiplicity of challenges contemporary religious beliefs, practices, and organizations now pose to the state. David Koussens examines the main political and legal configurations of French secularism over the last thirty years through a sociological and juridical lens, in order to better document its diversity. Such a portrait emphasizes that French secularism is not a univocal phenomenon but one that appears in many guises.

Revolutionaries and Reformers Contemporary Islamist Movements in the Middle East

Free Download Barry Rubin, "Revolutionaries and Reformers: Contemporary Islamist Movements in the Middle East"
English | 2003 | pages: 244 | ISBN: 079145617X, 0791456188 | PDF | 0,9 mb
Islamist movements seeking power today are faced with difficult choices regarding strategy, ranging from armed struggle to electoral efforts. An emerging alternative consists of a rethinking of Islamist politics, where the goal of a "totally Islamic" polity would be abandoned in favor of some form of Islamic-oriented society. In this reformulation, Islamist politics would function as a pressure group to make society more Islamic, reinforcing the walls of semi-separate internal communities and reinterpreting Islam in more liberal ways. The September 11, 2001 terror attack on the United States, however, demonstrates that the radical approach remains attractive to many Islamists. Addressing these issues, the contributors look at the countries where Islamist movements have been most important. Case studies of revolutionary and reformist groups are followed by chapters discussing future alternatives for Islamist politics, presenting arguments both advocating and critical of a potential liberal, reformist, interest-group Islamism.

Reading Contemporary Environmental Justice

Free Download R. Sreejith Varma, "Reading Contemporary Environmental Justice "
English | ISBN: 1032293705 | 2023 | 164 pages | EPUB, PDF | 537 KB + 7 MB
This volume investigates 11 contemporary environmental justice narratives from Kerala, the south-western state in India. Introducing a detailed review of environmental literature in Malayalam, the selected eco-narratives are presented through two key literary genres: life narratives and novels, conveying the socio-environmental pressures, problems, and anxieties of modern, globalising Kerala. This text also entails primary investigations of ‘toxic fictions’ and ‘extractivist fictions,’ including Malayalam novels that narrate the disastrous consequences of the permeation of toxic pollutants in human and ecosystemic bodies, and novels that chronicle the impact of exploitative mining activities on the environment. All eco-narratives analysed in the book exhibit the familiar pattern of the Global South environmental narratives, namely, a close imbrication of the ecological and social spheres.
