Between Encyclopedia and Chorography Defining the Agency of Cultural Encyclopedias from a Transcultural Perspective

Free Download Boroffka, "Between Encyclopedia and Chorography: Defining the Agency of "Cultural Encyclopedias" from a Transcultural Perspective "
English | ISBN: 3110747871 | 2022 | 340 pages | PDF | 13 MB
During the early modern period, regional specified compendia – which combine information on local moral and natural history, towns and fortifications with historiography, antiquarianism, images series or maps – gain a new agency in the production of knowledge. Via literary and aesthetic practices, the compilations construct a display of regional specified knowledge. In some cases this display of regional knowledge is presented as a display of a local cultural identity and is linked to early modern practices of comparing and classifying civilizations. At the core of the publication are compendia on the Americas which research has described as chorographies, encyclopeadias or – more recently – ‘cultural encyclopaedias’. Studies on Asian and European encyclopeadias, universal histories and chorographies help to contextualize the American examples in the broader field of an early modern and transcultural knowledge production, which inherits and modifies the ancient and medieval tradition.

Indonesian Syariah Defining a National School of Islamic Law

Free Download M. Barry Hooker, "Indonesian Syariah: Defining a National School of Islamic Law"
English | 2008 | pages: 368 | ISBN: 9812308024 | PDF | 7,4 mb
The creation of a national school of Islamic law in Indonesia has been on the legal agenda for the past fifty years. This book is a summary of what has been achieved. The material shows us a complex range of references for syariah. These include the formal structures of a "new fiqh", philosophies of law, transmissions of syariah through tertiary curricula and the Friday sermon in mosques, a bureaucratic form for conducting the Hajj, and contemporary debates on syariah values as expressions of public morality. Together these references indicate just how elusive the meaning of syariah has become in contemporary Indonesia.

Defining Science A Rhetoric of Demarcation

Free Download Defining Science: A Rhetoric of Demarcation By Charles Alan Taylor
1996 | 302 Pages | ISBN: 0299150305 | PDF | 18 MB
"The most interesting entry point to the demarcation problem in science since Popper’s seminal formulation."-Steve Fuller, Professor of Sociology & Social Policy, Durham UniversityWhat is science? What isn’t science? And who draws the line between them? These are rhetorical concerns, as Charles A. Taylor demonstrates in this ambitious book about the theoretical and cultural underpinnings of scientific practice. By showing how boundaries between "science" and "nonscience" are rhetorically constructed and socially enforced,Defining Sciencereveals the political and philosophical significance of such distinctions. Taylor examines the traditional "demarcation problem," the problem of defining the boundaries of science, as an ongoing rhetorical negotiation involving a full range of historical interests and social actors-from researchers and lab technicians to governmental and industrial patrons, program administrators, political representatives, journalists, and educators. His case studies of the recent debates over creationism and cold fusion clearly demonstrate how the rhetorical dynamics of science operate within different fields. In both cases, presented here with concision and insight, prevailing demarcations-or defining portrayals of science-emerge as far more nuanced than traditional accounts allow. Taylor analyzes traditional approaches to demarcation in science in order to incorporate their insights into his larger rhetorical view. His reformulation of philosophical, historical, and sociological accounts of science clearly illustrates the intellectual value of an interdisciplinary rhetoric of demarcation. Furthermore, Defining Science suggests how we, as a community, can positively influence future constructions of science and society. "This book confronts what is arguably the late twentieth century’s definitive problem in a provocative and interesting way. It will be of interest to anyone engaged with the question of knowledge in public life."-Charles Arthur Willard, Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication, University of Louisville

Naming, Defining, Phrasing Strong Asymmetrical Dependencies A Textual Approach

Free Download Jeannine Bischoff, Stephan Conermann, "Naming, Defining, Phrasing Strong Asymmetrical Dependencies: A Textual Approach"
English | ISBN: 3111200701, 9783111200705 | 2023 | 320 pages | PDF, EPUB | 29 + 4 MB
An examination of the terms used in specific historical contexts to refer to those people in a society who can be categorized as being in a position of ‘strong asymmetrical dependency’ (including slavery) provides insights into the social categories and distinctions that informed asymmetrical social interactions. In a similar vein, an analysis of historical narratives that either justify or challenge dependency is conducive to revealing how dependency may be embedded in (historical) discourses and ways of thinking. The eleven contributions in the volume approach these issues from various disciplinary vantage points, including theology, global history, Ottoman history, literary studies, and legal history. The authors address a wide range of different textual sources and historical contexts – from medieval Scandinavia and the Fatimid Empire to the history of abolition in Martinique and human rights violations in contemporary society. While the authors contribute innovative insights to ongoing discussions within their disciplines, the articles were also written with a view to the endeavor of furthering Dependency Studies as a transdisciplinary approach to the study of human societies past and present.
