The uniqueness of the city, as elaborated in this volume, provides background for understanding the non-traditional congressional relationship with the city and the way in which this establishes and perpetuates the continuing fight for congressional representation, real home rule and equitable federal benefits for citizens of the District of Columbia.

Democratic Governance in Northeast Asia A Human-Centered Approach to Evaluating Democracy (2024)

Free Download Brendan Howe, "Democratic Governance in Northeast Asia: A Human-Centered Approach to Evaluating Democracy (Security, Development and Human Rights in East Asia)"
English | 2015 | pages: 167 | ISBN: 1349558168, 1137550449 | PDF | 2,5 mb
Comprising case studies of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, this edited volume explores the key characteristics of democratic governance in Northeast Asia. Each democracy is assessed on the extent to which it enables the flourishing of social capital; prioritizes the interests of all as characterized by freedom from fear and want; and empowers all to participate in the democratic process and governance. With particular focus on the experience of minorities, this volume contends that the acid test of democratic governance is not how well the government represents the interests of the elites, or even the majority, but rather how it cares for the needs of vulnerable groups in society.

English | ISBN: 0190848928 | 2023 | 592 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
In the last several decades, there has been a surge of interest in expertise in the social scientific, philosophical, and legal literatures. While it is tempting to attribute this surge of interest in expertise to the emergence and consolidation of a "knowledge society," "post-industrial society," or "network society," it is more likely that the debates about expertise are symptomatic of significant change and upheaval.

Free Download Challenging Citizens: Democratic Innovations at the Local Level: The Case Study of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland by Pavel Šaradín , Hana Hurtíková , Michal Soukop , Markéta Zapletalová , Agnieszka Zogata-Kusz , Ewa Ganowicz
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 184 Pages | ISBN : 3031436733 | 7.6 MB
The book aims to complement the existing research on democratic innovations mainly by making unique comparative analyses of the democratic innovations at the local level in selected European post-communist countries, i.e. the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. Democratic innovations can help overcome political apathy, decreased confidence in democracy and improve efficiency of governance. We traditionally consider cities and municipalities to be cradles of democracy and connect them with deliberations on the further development of democratic theory and political practice. We therefore argue that the local level is a suitable arena and laboratory for both changes of institutional settings within the traditional model of representative democracy, and the structural changes, which concern changing relations between local representatives and citizens.

Plato’s Democratic Entanglements Athenian Politics and the Practice of Philosophy

Free Download S. Sara Monoson, "Plato’s Democratic Entanglements: Athenian Politics and the Practice of Philosophy"
English | 2013 | pages: 264 | ISBN: 0691158584, 0691043663 | EPUB | 1,9 mb
In this book, Sara Monoson challenges the longstanding and widely held view that Plato is a virulent opponent of all things democratic. She does not, however, offer in its place the equally mistaken idea that he is somehow a partisan of democracy. Instead, she argues that we should attend more closely to Plato’s suggestion that democracy is horrifying and exciting, and she seeks to explain why he found it morally and politically intriguing.
