2009 | 368 Pages | ISBN: 0824525825 | EPUB | 1 MB
Penned by the leading intellectual in the American Catholic hierarchy, this debut brings together some of the most influential writings on the Catholic vision-not just the Church itself but of the relation and unity of all people. Weaving together intellectual insight and personal wisdom, this investigation offers a luminous Catholic vision of communion, illustrating the Church’s relation to numerous religions as well as the secular world. Drawing from both the author’s observations of Catholicism in cultures around the globe andcountless theologians’ perspectives-including Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, Thomas Aquinas, and Francis of Assisi-this analysis demonstrates how to recognize the self-giving, liberating God who provides freedom from the competitive, oppressive gods of secular modernity. This overview also recalls an assortment of fascinating stories, from a poignant moment with a non-Christian in Zambia to the humbling dedication of volunteers who came to observe Pope John Paul II’s visit to Mexico City.Confronting controversial issues head-on, this volume will inspire Christians everywhere while also offering non-Christians a renewed understanding of whata Christian lifestylemeans for political and personal life today.

English | 2003 | pages: 487 | ISBN: 0822330911, 0822330792 | PDF | 1,6 mb
How do race and nature work as terrains of power? From eighteenth-century claims that climate determined character to twentieth-century medical debates about the racial dimensions of genetic disease, concepts of race and nature are integrally connected, woven into notions of body, landscape, and nation. Yet rarely are these complex entanglements explored in relation to the contemporary cultural politics of difference. This volume takes up that challenge. Distinguished contributors chart the traffic between race and nature across sites including rainforests, colonies, and courtrooms.

Ma(r)king the Difference

Free Download Ma(r)king the Difference: Multiculturalism and the Politics of Translation
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3658409231 | 378 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 2.3 MB
This research delivers a conceptual reconstruction of the trajectory of concepts used to mark qualitative differences among identities from the 16th to the 21st century in central Europe and the Americas. The surplus lies in the inclusion of colonial history in the genealogy of Western political thought and ideas, as well as in the postcolonial discussion of multiculturalism. The manuscript deals with the power and authority of translation providing the reader with an insight into the history of colonial racism through a deep conceptual analysis of three historical debates that have not been previously discussed together. By linking the so-called "Indian Question", the "Jewish Question" and the multicultural question, this thesis includes a valuable critical revision of the origins of Humanism in colonial times and contexts and an original critique to the power and violence of language in ma(r)king differences, which is described in terms of translation.

The Dimensions of Difference departs from traditional takes on feminist film criticism, and in particular from the psychoanalytical focus on the gaze, to examine the question of sexual difference through three axes: space, time, and bodies. These are some of the most fundamental elements of cinema, which deploys the bodies of actors through space and time, for instance, through camerawork and editing.

Cultural Difference and Material Culture in Middle English Romance Normans and Saxons

Free Download Cultural Difference and Material Culture in Middle English Romance: Normans and Saxons By Dominique Battles
2013 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 0415877989 | PDF | 2 MB
This book explores how the cultural distinctions and conflicts between Anglo-Saxons and Normans originating with the Norman Conquest of 1066 prevailed well into the fourteenth century and are manifest in a significant number of Middle English romances including "King Horn," "Havelok the Dane," "Sir Orfeo," "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," and others. Specifically, the study looks at how the material culture of these poems (architecture, battle tactic, landscapes) systematically and persistently distinguishes between Norman and Anglo-Saxon cultural identity. Additionally, it examines the influence of the English Outlaw Tradition, itself grounded in Anglo-Saxon resistance to the Norman Conquest, as expressed in specific recurring scenes (disguise and infiltration, forest exile) found in many Middle English romances. In the broadest sense, a significant number of Middle English romances, including some of the most well-read and often-taught, set up a dichotomy of two ruling houses headed by a powerful lord, who compete for power and influence. This book examines the cultural heritage behind each of these pairings to show how poets repeatedly contrast essentially Norman and Anglo-Saxon values and ruling styles.

Peculiar Language Literature as Difference from the Renaissance to James Joyce

Free Download Derek Attridge, "Peculiar Language: Literature as Difference from the Renaissance to James Joyce"
English | 2004 | pages: 278 | ISBN: 0415340586, 0415340578 | EPUB | 0,6 mb
First published in 1988, Peculiar Language is now established as one of the most important discussions of the language of literature. This thought-provoking book challenges traditional notions of literary criticism, arguing that all attempts by writers, critics and literary theorists to define the language of literature have involved self-contradiction. Through examination of key moments in literary history, Derek Attridge demonstrates that such contradictions in accounts of literary language are embedded in our cultural concept of ‘literature’ and asserts that in order to appreciate the forces that determine the limits of literary language, we must look beyond the realm of the ‘literary’ and embrace the wider political and social sphere. Re-issued as a result of sustained critical interest in the book, this edition includes a new preface by the author.
