Millions of years ago in the Cretaceous period, the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex-with its dagger-like teeth for tearing its prey to ribbons-was undoubtedly the fiercest carnivore to roam the Earth. Yet as What Bugged the Dinosaurs? reveals, T. rex was not the only killer. George and Roberta Poinar show how insects-from biting sand flies to disease-causing parasites-dominated life on the planet and played a significant role in the life and death of the dinosaurs.

Schaechter’s Mechanisms of Microbial Disease (2024)

Free Download N. Cary Engleberg MD, Terence Dermody PhD, Victor DiRita PhD, "Schaechter’s Mechanisms of Microbial Disease"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0781787440 | PDF | pages: 846 | 137.4 mb
Schaechter’s Mechanisms of Microbial Disease provides students with a thorough understanding of microbial agents and the pathophysiology of microbial diseases. The text is universally praised for "telling the story of a pathogen" in an engaging way, facilitating learning and recall by emphasizing unifying principles and paradigms, rather than forcing students to memorize isolated facts by rote. The table of contents is uniquely organized by microbial class and by organ system, making it equally at home in traditional and systems-based curricula. Case studies with problem-solving questions give students insight into clinical applications of microbiology, which is ideal for problem-based learning.

Synaptic Plasticity Dynamics, Development and Disease

Free Download Synaptic Plasticity: Dynamics, Development and Disease By Ulrich Thomas, Stephan J. Sigrist (auth.), Michael R. Kreutz, Carlo Sala (eds.)
2012 | 622 Pages | ISBN: 3709109310 | PDF | 11 MB
This book introduces the current concepts of molecular mechanisms in synaptic plasticity and provides a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge research technology used to investigate the molecular dynamics of the synapses. It explores current concepts on activity-dependent remodeling of the synaptic cytoskeleton and presents the latest ideas on the different forms of plasticity in synapses and dendrites. Synaptic Plasticity in Health and Disease not only supplies readers with extensive knowledge on the latest developments in research, but also with important information on clinical and applied aspects. Changes in spine synapses in different brain disease states, so-called synaptopathies, are explained and described by experts in the field. By outlining basic research findings as well as physiological and pathophysiological impacts on synaptic plasticity, the book represents an essential state-of-the-art work for scientists in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology and the neurosciences, as well as for doctors in neurology and psychiatry alike.

Disease and Diagnosis Value-Dependent Realism

Free Download Disease and Diagnosis: Value-Dependent Realism By William E. Stempsey S.J. (auth.)
2000 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 0792363221 | PDF | 7 MB
The germs of the ideas in this book became implanted in me during my experience as a resident in clinical pathology at Boston University Medical Center. At the time, I had inklings that the test results churned out by our laboratories were more than scientific facts. As a philosophically unsophisticated young physician, however, I had no language or framework to analyze what I saw as a deep philosophical problem, a problem largely unrecognized by most physicians. The test results provided by our laboratories were accurate and of great practical importance for patient care. However, most of the physicians who relied on our test results to diagnose and treat their patients either did not have the time or interest to consider the philosophical issues inherent in diagnosis, or, like me, had inadequate means to further analyze them. It was more than ten years later that I began doctoral studies in philosophy, and I was fortunate to find a faculty that was supportive of my efforts to address the problem. This book began as my doctoral dissertation in the Department of Philosophy at Georgetown University. I would like to acknowledge the assistance of my mentor, Robert Veatch, Ph. D. Our conversations during my Georgetown years led me in new and often fascinating directions. I would also like to acknowledge the help of Kenneth Schaffner, M. D. , Ph. D.

Borna Disease Virus Mögliche Ursache neurologischer und psychiatrischer Störungen des Menschen

Free Download Borna Disease Virus: Mögliche Ursache neurologischer und psychiatrischer Störungen des Menschen By Dr. Karl Bechter (auth.)
1998 | 178 Pages | ISBN: 3642960006 | PDF | 10 MB
