Why We Doubt A Cognitive Account of Our Skeptical Inclinations

Free Download Why We Doubt
by Pinillos, N. Ángel;

English | 2023 | ISBN: 0198871961 | 304 pages | True EPUB | 5.44 MB
This book, the first of its kind, puts forward a novel, unified cognitive account of skeptical doubt. Historically, most philosophers have tried to tackle this difficult topic by directly arguing that skeptical doubt is false. But N. Ángel Pinillos does something different. He begins by trying to uncover the hidden mental rule which, for better or worse, motivates our skeptical inclinations. He then gives an account of the broader cognitive purpose of having and applying this rule. Based on these ideas, he shows how we can give a new response to the traditional problem of global skepticism. He also argues that philosophical skepticism is not just something that comes up during philosophical reflection, as David Hume, Charles Sanders Peirce and other philosophers have urged. Instead, it is of great practical significance. The rule which produces skepticism may itself be operative in certain pathologies such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, in creative endeavors, and in conspiratorial thinking. The rule can also explain some of our reluctance to trust statistical evidence, especially in legal settings. More broadly, this volume aims to breathe new life into a classic problem in philosophy by tackling it from a new perspective and exploring new areas of application. The book will be of interest to philosophers, psychologists and anyone interested in the human capacity to doubt and to question our beliefs.

A Glance Beyond Doubt Narration, Representation, Subjectivity

Free Download A Glance Beyond Doubt: Narration, Representation, Subjectivity By Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan
1996 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 0814207065 | PDF | 27 MB
Focusing on William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom!, Vladimir Nabokov’s The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, Christine Brooke-Rose’s Thru, Samuel Beckett’s Company, and Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Rimmon-Kenan shows how modes of narration participate in the exploration of the problematics of representation and subjectivity. Her insightful analyses of the narrative strategies of these five novels demonstrate her point that narration itself provides a special access to representation and subjectivity. In addition, these analyses offer a compelling example of what it means to claim that we can treat narrative as theory.A Glance beyond Doubt thus provides an important methodological contribution to narrative studies while offering fresh and sophisticated readings of important modernist and postmodernist novels. Rimmon-Kenan’s work is valuable for students of narrative and of twentieth-century literature, and it has important implications for other disciplines now studying narrative, especially philosophy, historiography, psychoanalysis, and jurisprudence.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt The Warren Report and Lee Harvey Oswald’s Guilt and Motive 50 Years On

Free Download Mel Ayton, "Beyond Reasonable Doubt: The Warren Report and Lee Harvey Oswald’s Guilt and Motive 50 Years On"
English | ISBN: 1939521238 | 2014 | 471 pages | AZW3 | 4 MB
Beyond Reasonable Doubt examines how conspiracy theories developed after publication of the Warren Commission’s 1964 report into the circumstances surrounding the JFK assassination. Using the evidence compiled by the commissioners, the authors demonstrate how and why the report was rejected by the American public over the past five decades. The book also provides new and compelling evidence which reveals not only Oswald’s guilt, but his clear motive which was never satisfactorily addressed by the Warren investigation. The book also looks at the way in which conspiracy writers have succeeded in persuading a majority of the American public that Lee Harvey Oswald was either an innocent Patsy or acted in conjunction with others to assassinate the president. In an examination of the modus operandi of conspiracy writers, Ayton and Von Pein reveal how the public was manipulated into accepting conspiracy allegations and of how their theories were built around nothing more than misinterpretations and misrepresentation of the evidence and crude speculation.

Doubt and Skepticism in Antiquity and the Renaissance

Free Download Michelle Zerba, "Doubt and Skepticism in Antiquity and the Renaissance"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 110702465X | PDF | pages: 284 | 0.9 mb
This book is an interdisciplinary study of the forms and uses of doubt in works by Homer, Sophocles, Aristophanes, Cicero, Machiavelli, Shakespeare, and Montaigne. Based on close analysis of literary and philosophical texts by these important authors, Michelle Zerba argues that doubt is a defining experience in antiquity and the Renaissance, one that constantly challenges the limits of thought and representation. The wide-ranging discussion considers issues that run the gamut from tragic loss to comic bombast, from psychological collapse to skeptical dexterity, and from solitary reflection to political improvisation in civic contexts and puts Greek and Roman treatments of doubt into dialogue not only with sixteenth-century texts, but with contemporary works as well. Using the past to engage questions of vital concern to our time, Zerba demonstrates that although doubt sometimes has destructive consequences, it can also be conducive to tolerance, discovery, and conversation across sociopolitical boundaries.
