This book is the result of research which was begun over twenty years ago and which spanned two countries, as well as two decades. It developed out of the author’s work in speech therapy, but took on the in-depth theoretical investigation of the work of Bernstein, Vygotsky, Luria, and Hallidayan linguistics in an investigation of ways of thinking and the use of language, and particularly the relationship between group processes and individual learning. This research project did not remain within the realms of theory as it began to study developmental patterns which may be helpful in informing pedagogy, leading to this book, which gathers together real data and actual language use in the classroom. Rather like the sampling of water from a river by plunging in a test tube, this book provides a sample which is full of micro-elements in a medium which is a rich and complex context, full of variables, contextual variation and trace elements of sociocultural diversity. The small sample analysed in the book, taken from classroom data gathered in a small town in Tuscany and a small group of adolescents, and put under the microscope of quantitative and qualitative analysis involving multiple tests regarding various linguistic and socio-cultural elements, is testament to the complexity of such a setting and the nature of classroom interaction. The complex interactions between theory and practice, and between individual consciousness and socially organised experience are laid out in detail throughout the book, which offers both wide ranging and in-depth theoretical analysis of the relevant literature and insights into the careful sampling procedures used in the classroom all brought together to provide up-to-date and detailed information for teachers and to highlight aspects of diversity in the appropriation of cultural tools. The book can be read in two different ways, each one of them informative in itself. For those interested in socio-culturally informed theories of language, this book will serve as a guide to the relationships between three possible approaches: namely, the sociological approach of Basil Bernstein, the cultural-historical approach of Lev Vygotsky, and the linguistic approach of Michael Halliday. For those interested in empirical analysis of discourses produced by adolescents from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, the book provides rich material about language use by Italian and immigrant youth.

Philosophical and Empirical Approaches to Psychology: Mentalism vs. Anti-Mentalism philosophically analyzes four different approaches to psychology: introspectionism, behaviourism, cognitive psychology, and cognitive neuroscience to explore the concept of "the mind," which developed from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century up through present day psychology. The resulting ideas originating from these approaches are divided into two main groups in this book, mentalism (whose supporters assume that mind is not reducible to something else) and anti-mentalism (whose supporters assume that mind is indeed reducible to something else). This book argues that adopting one idea over another can have a profound influence in a psychologist’s research. Further, the author shows that some controversial psychological notions like "consciousness" pertain to a particular mentalistic approach. Many psychologists do not consider such notions scientific, but he argues that this depends upon their adherence to a certain anti-mentalistic approach or to a specific mentalistic perspective. The book examines these issues by assessing experimental psychology in relation to neurobiology and philosophy, offering an integration of philosophical and theoretical chapters along with empirical and experimental chapters. Theoretically, the arguments draw from philosophy of psychology and experimental psychology.

The role of the weak convergence technique via weighted empirical processes has proved to be very useful in advancing the development of the asymptotic theory of the so called robust inference procedures corresponding to non-smooth score functions from linear models to nonlinear dynamic models in the 1990’s. This monograph is an ex panded version of the monograph Weighted Empiricals and Linear Models, IMS Lecture Notes-Monograph, 21 published in 1992, that includes some aspects of this development. The new inclusions are as follows. Theorems 2. 2. 4 and 2. 2. 5 give an extension of the Theorem 2. 2. 3 (old Theorem 2. 2b. 1) to the unbounded random weights case. These results are found useful in Chapters 7 and 8 when dealing with ho moscedastic and conditionally heteroscedastic autoregressive models, actively researched family of dynamic models in time series analysis in the 1990’s. The weak convergence results pertaining to the partial sum process given in Theorems 2. 2. 6 . and 2. 2. 7 are found useful in fitting a parametric autoregressive model as is expounded in Section 7. 7 in some detail. Section 6. 6 discusses the related problem of fit ting a regression model, using a certain partial sum process. Inboth sections a certain transform of the underlying process is shown to provide asymptotically distribution free tests. Other important changes are as follows. Theorem 7. 3.

Person and number are two basic grammatical categories. However, they have not yet been exhaustively documented in many sign languages. This volume presents a thorough description of the form and interpretation of person and number in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) personal pronouns. This is the first book exploring together the two categories (and their interaction) in a sign language.Building on a combination of elicitation methods and corpus data analysis, this book shows that person and number are encoded through a set of distinctive phonological features: person is formally marked through spatial features, and number by the path specifications of the sign. Additionally, this study provides evidence that the same number marker might have a different semantic import depending on the person features with which it is combined.Results of this investigation contribute fresh data to cross-linguistic studies on person and number, which are largely based on evidence from spoken language only. Furthermore, while this research identifies a number of significant differences with respect to prior descriptions of person and number in other sign languages, it also demonstrates that, from a typological standpoint, the array of distinctions that LSC draws within each category is not exceptional.
