With contributions by J. R. L. Allen, M. Bell, R. J. Bradley, T. Champion, S. Crutchley, A. Firth, M. G. Fulford, A. J. Long, S. J. Mithen, D. O’Regan, S. J. Rippon, D. H. Roberts, and H. J. Tyson.E-book (PDF) published 2013.England’s coastal zone contains an important legacy of historic assets, including a complex array of fragile and irreplaceable archaeological remains. These remains are vital for the understanding of Britain’s emergence as an island, her developing relationship with the sea, and those maritime influences which contributed to the forging of our identity as a mercantile, industrial and imperial power. This report documents research jointly commissioned by English Heritage and the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England from the Universities of Reading and Southampton during 1994-5. It examines the character of the recorded coastal archaeological resource and identifies future themes for survey and investigation. It also considers the natural and human processes to which coastal archaeological remains are vulnerable, including sea-level change, and make recommendations aimed at achieving their improved management.

‘The Iliad and Odyssey,’ writes Professor George Steiner, ‘are perennially active in the pulse of the English languages, in the texts and contexts of Anglo-Saxon self-definition; these translations and variations on Homeric themes offer nothing less than ‘a concise chronicle of English’.From Lydgate’s Troy Book, Chaucer’s Troylus and Criseyde and Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida to Pound’s Cantos, Joyce’s Ulysses and Derek Walcott’s Omeros, Homer has been the most translated author and presence in our literature and languages (such as American and Afro-Caribbean). Homer has elicited a fantastic wealth and quality of response, from Hobbes to Gladstone, from T. E. Lawrence to Robert Graves. Homeric translations by Chapman, Dryden, Pope, Shelley and Christopher Logue are masterpieces in their own right. This superb selection assembles highlights and representative moments from six and a half centuries.

It has been the business of my life to teach history: and the informal division of labour which comes to pass in a University has led me to pay special attention to the military side of it. This aspect of history involves much comparison of statements and weighing of evidence, and is therefore calculated to be very useful to those for whom the study of history is, not their permanent occupation, but the means of completing their mental training. Campaigns and battles present in an exceptionally clear shape the stock problems of history, what was done, why it was done, what were the results, what ought to have been done, what would have been the consequences if this or that important detail had been different. It is however not easy to gain from books a clear general idea of a campaign or a battle, harder perhaps than to obtain a similar grasp of the work of a legislator, or of the drift of a social change. To the ordinary historian the military side is only one aspect of his theme, and very possibly an aspect which interests him but little. He narrates the facts as given him by his authorities: but when these are vague, as mediaeval writers mostly are, or discrepant, as modern writers are who mean to be precise and write from different standpoints, he need be something of an expert to make his narrative lifelike. On the other hand, purely military works are, very reasonably, technical: they are written for experts, to whom the technical language is familiar, and they often go into considerable detail. Ordinary readers are apt, consequently, to want help in obtaining from them a clear idea of the outline of events.

On the morning of August 22, 1485, in fields several miles from Bosworth, two armies faced each other, ready for battle. The might of Richard III’s army was pitted against the inferior forces of the upstart pretender to the crown, Henry Tudor, a twenty-eight year old Welshman who had just arrived back on British soil after fourteen years in exile. Yet this was to be a fight to the death―only one man could survive; only one could claim the throne. It would be the end of the War of the Roses.
