2012 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 1443837423 | PDF | 1 MB
Can Christianity be reconciled with Darwin s theory of evolution by natural selection? What relevance do the biological sciences have to religious thought? Does Christian theology have anything to offer when it comes to formulating scientific hypotheses? These questions are among those explored in this collection of essays arising from a meeting of the UK Science and Religion Forum held in Cambridge to mark the bicentenary of Darwin s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. The volume brings together contributions from a distinguished group of scholars at the forefront of the field of science-and-religion including Denis Alexander, R. J. Berry, John Hedley Brooke, Sarah Coakley, Celia Deane-Drummond, David Fergusson, David Knight, Christopher Southgate, Neil Spurway and Kenneth Wilson. The essays are organized around the theme of natural theology the attempt to draw theological conclusions from reflection on the natural world. The essays cover historical, philosophical and theological perspectives, and explore some contemporary approaches to natural theology in the context of Darwinism

Evolving Approaches to Understanding Natural Hazards

Free Download Burrell E. Montz Graham A. Tobin, "Evolving Approaches to Understanding Natural Hazards"
English | ISBN: 1443876097 | 2015 | 515 pages | PDF | 8 MB
The 21st century presents many challenges to the hazard manager; dynamic climatic conditions combined with population growth, rapid urbanization, and changing socio-economic relationships are reshaping disaster impacts, community responses, and social safety mechanisms. Indeed, human vulnerability is constantly restructured by the ongoing interplay of physical, social, economic, and political forces. At the same time, reducing vulnerability and enhancing community resilience require policies aimed at mitigating the consequences of disasters as they affect different locations and different groups, requiring sound scientifically-based research to further an understanding of the forces at play, and to devise appropriate means to counter them. It is within this context that this book examines evolving approaches to natural hazards. Research into natural hazards has a long tradition beginning with a focus on physical processes and evolving into an interdisciplinary agenda that incorporates interactions between the physical and human environments, embracing initiatives ranging from the physical to the socio-economic and political. It utilises various methodological approaches and technological advances, employing both quantitative and qualitative procedures. The papers included in this book offer insights into the development of applied hazards research, as they build on previous work, evolving technologies, improved understandings of the factors involved, and increased awareness of the needs of those who manage hazards. This volume shows an appreciation for the foundation that has been set, and will inspire future researchers as they look to address these very pressing social issues.

The evolving role of national parliaments in the European Union Ireland as a case study

Free Download Gavin Barrett, "The evolving role of national parliaments in the European Union: Ireland as a case study"
English | ISBN: 1784993212 | 2018 | 360 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book examines the gradually increasing role of national parliaments in the European Union and asks how and why this came about. It takes Ireland as a case study, examining the relationship between Ireland’s parliament (the Oireachtas) and the European Union. It also focuses sharply on parliament’s role in European affairs in Ireland, a jurisdiction of strong comparative interest to the UK . It examines the evolution in national parliaments’ roles, the reasons for change and the challenges that must be faced in making further progress. The book analyses Ireland’s slow parliamentary adaptation to European integration, analyses the impact of the Lisbon Treaty and economic crises in accelerating reform, and identifies where improvement is still badly needed.

SH2 Domains Functional Modules and Evolving Tools in Biology

Free Download SH2 Domains: Functional Modules and Evolving Tools in Biology
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1071633929 | 629 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 48 MB
This volume looks at the latest methods used to study and modulate the biological function and mechanisms of SH2 domains. The chapters in this book are organized into five parts. Part One presents methodology aimed at determining the structures and dynamics of SH2 domains and their complexes with phosphopeptides. Part Two discusses techniques to understand and predict interactions of SH2 domains by measuring or calculating their affinity to phosphopeptides. Part Three focuses on inhibitors of SH2 domains that lead the way for chemical tool development and drug discovery. Part Four describes how to evolve and engineer SH2 domains with specific binding properties, and Part Five explores how to measure the regulation of protein tyrosine phosphatase activity through allosteric binding of peptides to SH2 domains and condensation. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.
