Gender, Sexuality and Colonial Modernities (Routledge Research in Gender and History)

Free Download Gender, Sexuality and Colonial Modernities (Routledge Research in Gender and History) By Antoinette Burton (editor)
1999 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 0415200687 | PDF | 6 MB
Gender, Sexuality and Colonial Modernities considers the ways in which modernity was constructed, in all its incompleteness, through colonialism. Using a variety of archival resources and equally diverse methodologies, the authors trace modernity’s unstable foundations in the slippages and ruptures of colonial gender and sexual politics. As a whole, the essays illustrate that modern colonial regimes are never self-evidently hegemonic, but are always in process – subject to disruption and contest – and never finally accomplished; and are therefore unfinished business.

Gender, Affect, and Emotion from Classical to Early Modern Literature

Free Download Gender, Affect, and Emotion from Classical to Early Modern Literature: Afterlives of the Nightingale’s Song
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031277201 | 472 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 3 MB
Drawing both on historical accounts of the emotions and on contemporary affect theory, this book explores the intersection of social constructions of sex and gender with the development of norms for emotive speech in literary texts from the classical to the early modern periods. More specifically, the book argues that the influential Stoic theory of the prepassions (as distinct from the passions proper) resonates richly with recent work on affect, emphasizing in similar ways the role of embodied feelings that may exceed available linguistic norms as well as challenging gendered emotion scripts. From the tragic Stoicism of Virgil’s Aeneid to Chaucer’s Stoic-Petrarchan Griselda and the Stoic-inflected attitudes reflected in the work of seventeenth century poet Mary Carey, the Stoic view of the emotions as test-cases for a moralized conception of masculine coherence conflicts with a fluid affective model of feeling that challenges the ideal of emotional self-containment.

Deconstructing Gender Stereotypes in Western Tradition

Free Download María Dolores García Ramos, "Deconstructing Gender Stereotypes in Western Tradition"
English | ISBN: 1527552926 | 2024 | 305 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Traditional feminine description and roles within Western literary and artistic cultural artifacts have tended to portray women in very a specific way – one which creates, disseminates and consolidates the gender roles which became foundational to heteropatriarchy and, sometimes, male chauvinism. As an example, women in poetry are often portrayed as fragile, sweet, romanticized creatures who ignite masculine desire or bolster male artists’ creativity. In this sense, most Western lyrical traditions present women as either objects of desire or inspirational muses. These secondary roles, which transform women into subalterns, can also be seen in other artistic manifestations, such as painting and sculpture or, more recently, films, TV fictions, graphic novels and videogames. This volume offers a multidisciplinary approach to the topic of feminine representation in literature and the arts, presenting womanhood from new perspectives which highlight feminine characters who have traditionally been neglected, misrepresented or reduced to marginal roles.

Gender, Violence and Power in Indonesia Across Time and Space

Free Download Gender, Violence and Power in Indonesia: Across Time and Space By Katharine McGregor, Ana Dragojlovic, Hannah Loney
2020 | 210 Pages | ISBN: n/a , ASIN: 2019055737 | PDF | 13 MB
This book uses an interdisciplinary approach to chart how various forms of violence – domestic, military, legal and political – are not separate instances of violence, but rather embedded in structural inequalities brought about by colonialism, occupation and state violence. The book explores both case studies of individuals and of groups to examine experiences of violence within the context of gender and structures of power in modern Indonesian history and Indonesia-related diasporas. It argues that gendered violence is particularly important to consider in this region because of its complex history of armed conflict and authoritarian rule, the diversity of people that have been affected by violence, as well as the complexity of the religious and cultural communities involved. The book focuses in particular on textual narratives of violence, visualisations of violence, commemorations of violence and the politics of care.

This Is America Race, Gender, and Politics in America’s Musical Landscape (EPUB)

Free Download Katie Rios, ""This Is America": Race, Gender, and Politics in America’s Musical Landscape "
English | ISBN: 1793619166 | 2021 | 196 pages | EPUB | 9 MB
In "This Is America": Race, Gender, and Politics in America’s Musical Landscape, Katie Rios argues that prominent American artists and musicians build encoded gestures of resistance into their works and challenge the status quo. These artists offer both an interpretation and a critique of what "This Is America" means. Using Childish Gambino’s video for "This Is America" as a starting point, Rios considers how elements including clothing, hairstyles, body movements, gaze, lighting effects, distortion, and word play symbolize American dissonance. From Laurie Anderson’s presence in challenging authority and playing with traditional gender roles in her works, to the Black female feminism and social activism of Beyoncé, Rhiannon Giddens, and Janelle Monáe, to hip hop as resistance in the age of Trump, to sonic and visual variety in the musical Hamilton, the subjects are as powerful as they are topical. Rios explores the ways in which artists relate to and represent underrepresented groups, especially groups that are not traditionally perceived as having a majority voice. The encoded resistances recur across performances and video recordings so that they begin to become recognizable as repeated acts of resistance directed at injustices based on a number of categories, including race, gender, class, religion, and politics.
