This book is a celebration of mathematical problem solving at the level of the high school American Invitational Mathematics Examination. There is no other book on the market focused on the AIME. It is intended, in part, as a resource for comprehensive study and practice for the AIME competition for students, teachers, and mentors. After all, serious AIME contenders and competitors should seek a lot of practice in order to succeed. However, this book is also intended for anyone who enjoys solving problems as a recreational pursuit. The AIME contains many problems that have the power to foster enthusiasm for mathematics the problems are fun, engaging, and addictive. The problems found within these pages can be used by teachers who wish to challenge their students, and they can be used to foster a community of lovers of mathematical problem solving! There are more than 250 fully-solved problems in the book, containing examples from AIME competitions of the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. In some cases, multiple solutions are presented to highlight variable approaches. To help problem-solvers with the exercises, the author provides two levels of hints to each exercise in the book, one to help stuck starters get an idea how to begin, and another to provide more guidance in navigating an approach to the solution. Topics include algebra, combinatorics, probability, number theory, sequences and series, logarithms, trigonometry, complex numbers, polynomials, and geometry. Many AIME problems involve using several of these mathematical disciplines simultaneously. To make the book indeed gentle, the author has prepared well-motivated, detailed, clear solutions to all examples and exercises in the book. He has not always opted for the shortest solution, but rather, he has presented solutions that a typical student might say I could have come up with that! The book avoids excessive reliance on heavy machinery, deep theorems, or undue abstraction.

Goliath as Gentle Giant Sympathetic Portrayals in Popular Culture

Free Download Jonathan L. Friedmann, "Goliath as Gentle Giant: Sympathetic Portrayals in Popular Culture "
English | ISBN: 1666904694 | 2022 | 168 pages | EPUB | 12 MB
In the Hebrew Bible and stories loyal to it, Goliath is the stereotypical giant of folklore: big, brash, violent, and dimwitted. Goliath as Gentle Giant sets out to rehabilitate the giant’s image by exploring the origins of the biblical behemoth, the limitations of the "underdog" metaphor, and the few sympathetic treatments of Goliath in popular media. What insights emerge when we imagine things from Goliath’s point of view? How might this affect our reading of the biblical account or its many retellings and interpretations? What sort of man was Goliath really? The nuanced portraits analyzed in this book serve as a catalyst to challenge readers to question stereotypes, reexamine old assumptions, and humanize the "other."

"To be gentle is to resist the privileging of command above compassion. It is a quiet voice, a persistent whisper, calm and consoling. Ferocity is an armour, a forceful expression of resolve and protection. To be fierce is to know the intensity of the edges of feeling. It is the voice that calls out, intending to be heard."

"Gentle Johnny Ramensky" is the astonishing tale of a boy reared in the poverty of the Gorbals who became one of the world’s most extraordinary safe blowers. He spent more than 40 years in jail. A daring escaper, he broke out of Scotland’s grim prison fortress of Peterhead five times – three times in one year! A likeable rogue, he was a gentle man who in peacetime shrank from violence. But he served his country with exceptional bravery and skill in the Second World War. Recruited into the Commandos, he was parachuted behind enemy lines to break into the safes of the German High Command to steal vital documents from Rommel and Goering. Back in civvy street he could not resist a return to the excitement of roaming darkened rooftops and breaking open the toughest of safes. Tragically he was behind bars when he died, by then a true Scottish legend.
