Religion and Global Politics: Soft Power in Nigeria and Beyond examines the deployment of religious soft power in African states and the potential it has for transforming perceptions of the continent. The contributors refocus the attention on religion away from the ‘misery’ discourse of conflict and violence towards the domain of international relations, diplomacy and foreign policy in Africa. Through this shift, the contributors analyze the ways in which religion has impacted the external relations of African states. Religion and Global Politics introduces the theme of religion to the discourse of African international relations and politics to provide a thorough examination of religion’s influence on politics in the daily lives of African people.

Human Rights in Global Politics

Free Download Tim Dunne, "Human Rights in Global Politics"
English | ISBN: 0521641381 | | 352 pages | PDF | 1229 KB
There is a stark contradiction between the theory of universal human rights and the everyday practice of human wrongs. This timely volume brings together leading scholars to evaluate this paradox. The contributors ask whether human rights abuses are a result of the failure of governments to live up to a universal human rights standard, or whether the search for moral universals is a fundamentally flawed enterprise. The book evaluates the philosophical basis of human rights, and reflects on the structures that affect the development of a global human rights culture.

Hoping to Help The Promises and Pitfalls of Global Health Volunteering

Free Download Hoping to Help: The Promises and Pitfalls of Global Health Volunteering By Judith N. Lasker
2016 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 150170009X | PDF | 1 MB
Overseas volunteering has exploded in numbers and interest in the last couple of decades. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people travel from wealthier to poorer countries to participate in short-term volunteer programs focused on health services. Churches, universities, nonprofit service organizations, profit-making "voluntourism" companies, hospitals, and large corporations all sponsor brief missions. Hoping to Help is the first book to offer a comprehensive assessment of global health volunteering, based on research into how it currently operates, its benefits and drawbacks, and how it might be organized to contribute most effectively. Given the enormous human and economic investment in these activities, it is essential to know more about them and to understand the advantages and disadvantages for host communities. Most people assume that poor communities benefit from the goodwill and skills of the volunteers. Volunteer trips are widely advertised as a means to "give back" and "make a difference." In contrast, some claim that health volunteering is a new form of colonialism, designed to benefit the volunteers more than the host communities. Others focus on unethical practices and potential harm to the presumed "beneficiaries." Judith N. Lasker evaluates these opposing positions and relies on extensive research―interviews with host country staff members, sponsor organization leaders, and volunteers, a national survey of sponsors, and participant observation―to identify best and worst practices. She adds to the debate a focus on the benefits to the sponsoring organizations, benefits that can contribute to practices that are inconsistent with what host country staff identify as most likely to be useful for them and even with what may enhance the experience for volunteers. Hoping to Help illuminates the activities and goals of sponsoring organizations and compares dominant practices to the preferences of host country staff and to nine principles for most effective volunteer trips.

Handbook of Global Leadership and Followership

Free Download Handbook of Global Leadership and Followership: Integrating the Best Leadership Theory and Practice
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031215435 | 1879 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 23 MB
This handbook integrates the best leadership and followership theories and practices between the Global North-West (countries of Western individualistic cultures in Europe, North America, Australia and Oceana) and the Global South-East (countries of Eastern collectivistic cultures in Asia, Africa, South America, and South-East Asian and Oceana). There is a need to bring the Global North-West and the Global South-East together to address global challenges such as the climate change, global hunger and poverty, domestic and international terrorism, social justice, gender inequality, and domestic and global abuse of human and natural resources. This innovative volume proposes that the democratic leadership of the Global North-West and the human-centered followership of the Global South-East can transform the world if leadership and followership values, education, and practices are integrated. It utilizes findings from positive psychology, social psychology, organizational behavior, and world religions and contemplative wisdom traditions to highlight the case for global leadership and followership.

This book seeks to identify the reasons why some countries were more efficient and effective than others in responding to the COVID 19 pandemic, and why the global community failed to coalesce. What are the political determinants of the different state responses to the pandemic? Why was scientific advice rejected or ignored in many countries? What has been the role, respectively, of neoliberalism, populism, and authoritarianism in the making of Covid-19 policy? What role have each of these factors played in the uneven and clearly inadequate global response to the pandemic?
