England’s Coastal Heritage A Survey for English Heritage and the RCHME

Free Download England’s Coastal Heritage: A Survey for English Heritage and the RCHME By Michael Fulford, Timothy Champion, Antony Long (eds.)
1997 | 270 Pages | ISBN: 1850746303 | PDF | 39 MB
With contributions by J. R. L. Allen, M. Bell, R. J. Bradley, T. Champion, S. Crutchley, A. Firth, M. G. Fulford, A. J. Long, S. J. Mithen, D. O’Regan, S. J. Rippon, D. H. Roberts, and H. J. Tyson.E-book (PDF) published 2013.England’s coastal zone contains an important legacy of historic assets, including a complex array of fragile and irreplaceable archaeological remains. These remains are vital for the understanding of Britain’s emergence as an island, her developing relationship with the sea, and those maritime influences which contributed to the forging of our identity as a mercantile, industrial and imperial power. This report documents research jointly commissioned by English Heritage and the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England from the Universities of Reading and Southampton during 1994-5. It examines the character of the recorded coastal archaeological resource and identifies future themes for survey and investigation. It also considers the natural and human processes to which coastal archaeological remains are vulnerable, including sea-level change, and make recommendations aimed at achieving their improved management.

Temples Rising A Heritage of Sacrifice

Free Download Richard E. Bennett, "Temples Rising: A Heritage of Sacrifice"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 1629725692 | EPUB | pages: 352 | 5.5 mb
In their poverty, the early Kirtland Saints were commanded to build a temple, "a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God" (D&C 88:119) so that the Lord could endow His people "with power from on high." (D&C 95:8). After abandoning Kirtland and that holy house, they built again in Nauvoo, only to watch the temple burn as they left it behind. Upon arriving in the Great Basin, they quickly laid plans for more temples in Salt Lake City, St. George, Manti, and Logan. Time after time, they faced opposition and sacrifice, yet they continued to build, dedicate, learn, and worship. Why did these temples remain so important to the Saints and to the Lord in spite of roadblocks?

Kentucky’s Cookbook Heritage Two Hundred Years of Southern Cuisine and Culture

Free Download Kentucky’s Cookbook Heritage: Two Hundred Years of Southern Cuisine and Culture By John van Willigen
2014 | 306 Pages | ISBN: 0813146917 | EPUB | 7 MB
Food is a significant part of our daily lives and can be one of the most telling records of a time and place. Our meals — from what we eat, to how we prepare it, to how we consume it — illuminate our culture and history. As a result, cookbooks present a unique opportunity to analyze changing foodways and can yield surprising discoveries about society’s tastes and priorities. In Kentucky’s Cookbook Heritage, John van Willigen explores the state’s history through its changing food culture, beginning with Lettice Bryan’s The Kentucky Housewife (originally published in 1839). Considered one of the earliest regional cookbooks, The Kentucky Housewife includes pre–Civil War recipes intended for use by a household staff instead of an individual cook, along with instructions for serving the family. Van Willigen also shares the story of the original Aunt Jemima — the advertising persona of Nancy Green, born in Montgomery County, Kentucky — who was one of many African American voices in Kentucky culinary history. Kentucky’s Cookbook Heritage is a journey through the history of the commonwealth, showcasing the shifting priorities and innovations of the times. Analyzing the historical importance of a wide range of publications, from the nonprofit and charity cookbooks that flourished at the end of the twentieth century to the contemporary cookbook that emphasizes local ingredients, van Willigen provides a valuable perspective on the state’s social history.

Geopolitics of Digital Heritage

Free Download Geopolitics of Digital Heritage
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009500147 | 102 Pages | PDF (True) | 2 MB
Geopolitics of Digital Heritage analyzes and discusses the political implications of the largest digital heritage aggregators across different scales of governance, from the city-state governed Singapore Memory Project, to a national aggregator like Australia’s Trove, to supranational digital heritage platforms, such as Europeana, to the global heritage aggregator, Google Arts & Culture. These four dedicated case studies provide focused, exploratory sites for critical investigation of digital heritage aggregators from the perspective of their geopolitical motivations and interests, the economic and cultural agendas of involved stakeholders, as well as their foreign policy strategies and objectives. The Element employs an interdisciplinary approach and combines critical heritage studies with the study of digital politics and communications. Drawing from empirical case study analysis, it investigates how political imperatives manifest in the development of digital heritage platforms to serve different actors in a highly saturated global information space, ranging from national governments to transnational corporations.
