In recent years, the sharp rise in inflation across the world has brought about challenges for businesses and households alike. In the UK, many pay offers have not met the expectations of employees resulting in widespread strikes. The action of the Bank of England in raising interest rates to bring inflation down has led to sharp rises in mortgage interest rates, putting further pressure on households. This book explores what is meant by inflation and how we go about measuring it. It recounts the history of price rises over the past few decades and how pensions, pay and benefits have been affected. It also examines the political and economic factors that have driven government responses to inflation. The book completes the broad picture of recent price changes by looking at house prices, rents, and business prices, as well as how they are reported as official statistics.

Ludwig von Mises on money and inflation a synthesis of several lectures

Free Download Ludwig von Mises on money and inflation : a synthesis of several lectures By Greaves, Bettina Bien
2010 | 85 Pages | ISBN: 1933550759 | EPUB | 1 MB
In the 1960s, Ludwig von Mises lectured often on money and inflation. Bettina Bien Greaves was there taking shorthand. She has been working to transcribe them for a very long time. At last the results are here and they are fantastic. To have this work is like having Mises as your private tutor, telling you about money and inflation in a casual setting and in plain language. He is the prophet of the 20th century on these topics, and here he presents his entire apparatus. True, this book is not technically by Mises. It is not something he signed off on. But they are his lectures, and they provide a glimpse into the workings of an incredible mind on a topic that is crucial to our future. Ms. Greaves explains: Upon the establishment of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) in 1946, Ludwig von Mises became a part-time adviser, and he served in that capacity until his death in 1973. Whenever FEE held a seminar in Irvington, if he was in town he would drive out from New York City, where he lived with his wife, Margit, to speak to the participants. His topic was quite often inflation. I attended all those lectures, took them down in shorthand and later transcribed them. The thought occurred to me that eight to ten of his lectures on inflation, delivered in the 1960s, might be integrated, with the duplications deleted, and turned into a single piece. Hence this paper. Mises did not like to have his oral remarks quoted or published because, obviously, they did not represent the care and precision he devoted to his writings. However, it does not seem to me that these lectures, as I have edited them, misrepresent his ideas in any way. Moreover, they reveal his unpretentious manner and the informal simple style he used when talking to students. He often rephrased an idea in several different ways, repeating it for emphasis. He was frequently accused of being "simplistic," of making economic subjects appear too clear and simple, but it was this very

Money Stock Control and Inflation Targeting in Germany A State Space Modelling Approach to the Bundesbank’s Operating Procedur

Free Download Money Stock Control and Inflation Targeting in Germany: A State Space Modelling Approach to the Bundesbank’s Operating Procedures and Intermediate Strategy By Dr. Claus Brand (auth.)
2001 | 174 Pages | ISBN: 3790813931 | PDF | 4 MB
The book considers issues relevant to the European Central Bank in refining and communicating its strategy. It offers a historical assessment of the Bundesbank’s strategy of monetary targeting conducted from 1974 to 1998. In contrast to several other prominent studies it is argued that money played a flexible but very important role in the conduct of its policy. It also explores the implications of the identified monetary policy regime in the context of various theories of the money supply process. The empirical analysis conducted in this study is based on a linear state space modelling approach which offers an appealing and direct representation of common stochastic trends. The framework is less restrictive and it is encompassing in that it does not construe the persistent dynamics as being driven by pure random walk components.

Inflation Targeting Lessons from the International Experience

Free Download Ben S. Bernanke, "Inflation Targeting: Lessons from the International Experience"
English | ISBN: 0691086893 | 2001 | 392 pages | PDF | 59 MB
How should governments and central banks use monetary policy to create a healthy economy? Traditionally, policymakers have used such strategies as controlling the growth of the money supply or pegging the exchange rate to a stable currency. In recent years a promising new approach has emerged: publicly announcing and pursuing specific targets for the rate of inflation. This book is the first in-depth study of inflation targeting. Combining penetrating theoretical analysis with detailed empirical studies of countries where inflation targeting has been adopted, the authors show that the strategy has clear advantages over traditional policies. They argue that the U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank should adopt this strategy, and they make specific proposals for doing so.
