A Phenomenological Study of Depression in Iran

Free Download A Phenomenological Study of Depression in Iran by Moujan Mirdamadi
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 204 Pages | ISBN : 3031304063 | 3.1 MB
This book is an investigation into cultural variations in experiences of depression. Examining first-person accounts of depressed persons in Iran alongside similar previously studied data from the UK, the book highlights the cultural shaping at the heart of variations in experiences, manifestations, and articulations of depression. The analyses presented appeal to some of the longstanding pillars of Iranian culture, such as folk theories and literature, as well as the dominant social influences, like the Iran-Iraq war and the Islamic revolution. A central claim made, therefore, is that contrary to the universalising approaches in psychiatry, a better understanding of the workings of mental illness is achieved by situating individuals and their experience in a meaning-making sociocultural context.

Human Rights in Iran The Abuse of Cultural Relativism

Free Download Human Rights in Iran: The Abuse of Cultural Relativism By Reza Afshari
2011 | 440 Pages | ISBN: 0812221397 | PDF | 5 MB
Selected by Choice magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title Are the principles set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights truly universal? Or, as some have argued, are they derived exclusively from Western philosophic traditions and therefore irrelevant to many non-Western cultures? Should a state’s claims to indigenous traditions, and not international covenants, determine the scope of rights granted to its citizens? In his strong defense of the Declaration, Reza Afshari contends that the moral vision embodied in this and other agreements is a proper response to the abuses of the modern state. Asserting that the most serious violations of human rights by state rulers are motivated by political and economic factors rather than the purported concern for cultural authenticity, Afshari examines one particular state that has claimed cultural exception to the universality of human rights, the Islamic Republic of Iran. In his revealing case study, Afshari investigates how Islamic culture and Iranian politics since the fall of the Shah have affected human rights policy in that state. He exposes the human rights violations committed by ruling clerics in Iran since the Revolution, showing that Iran has behaved remarkably like other authoritarian governments in its human rights abuses. For more than two decades, Iran has systematically jailed, tortured, and executed dissidents without due process of law and assassinated political opponents outside state borders. Furthermore, like other oppressive states, Iran has regularly denied and countered the charges made by United Nations human rights monitors, defending its acts as authentic cultural practices. Throughout his study, Afshari addresses Iran’s claims of cultural relativism, a controversial thesis in the intense ongoing debate over the universality of human rights. In prison memoirs he uncovers the actual human rights abuses committed by the Islamic Republic and the sociopolitical conditions that cause or permit them. Finally, Afshari turns to little-read UN reports that reveal that the dynamics of power between UN human rights monitors and Iranian leaders have proven ineffective at enforcing human rights policy in Iran. Critically analyzing the state’s responses, Afshari shows that the Islamic Republic, like other oppressive states, has regularly denied and countered the charges made by UN human rights monitors, and when denials were patently implausible, it defended its acts as authentic cultural practices. This defense is equally unconvincing, since it lacked domestic cultural consensus.

The Art of Iran in the Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries Tracing the Modern and the Contemporary

Free Download Hamid Keshmirshekan, "The Art of Iran in the Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries: Tracing the Modern and the Contemporary "
English | ISBN: 1474488641 | 2023 | 320 pages | PDF | 32 MB
This book deals with the exploration and theorisation of Modern and Contemporary art of Iran through the examination of art movements and artistic practices in relation to other cultural, social and political discourses during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It focuses on discourses and their impact on art movements and practices and aims to selectively explore certain prevailing debates in action during this time. To come to grips with the way that artistic trends in Iran can be traced within the intellectual and political landscape of the country mainly from the 1940s to the present, the author has tried to articulate new ideas for relating art to its wider context – whether social, cultural or political – and to bring together critical and historical evidence in order to provide an insight into current artistic concerns. The book explores these underlying themes and discourses through a series of case studies, including through close scrutiny of works of artists.

The Great Famine & Genocide in Iran 1917-1919 1917-1919

Free Download The Great Famine & Genocide in Iran: 1917-1919: 1917-1919 By Mohammad Gholi Majd
2013 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 076186167X | EPUB | 3 MB
At least 8-10 million Iranians out of a population of 18-20 million died of starvation and disease during the famine of 1917-1919. The Iranian holocaust was the biggest calamity of World War I and one of the worst genocides of the 20th century, yet it remained concealed for nearly a century. The 2003 edition of this book relied primarily on US diplomatic records and memoirs of British officers who served in Iran in World War I, but in this edition these documents have been supplemented with US military records, British official sources, memoirs, diaries of notable Iranians, and a wide array of Iranian newspaper reports. In addition, the demographic data has been expanded to include newly discovered US State Department documents on Iran’s pre-1914 population. This book also includes a new chapter with a detailed military and political history of Iran in World War I. A work of enduring value, Majd provides a comprehensive account of Iran’s greatest calamity.

In July 2015, eight parties – France, Germany and the United Kingdom, together with the European Union and China, Russia and the United States on the one side, and Iran on the other – adopted the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as the Iran nuclear deal. Under the agreement, Iran accepted limits to its nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief. Hailed by some as a diplomatic achievement, detractors – both in the US and the Middle East – saw the deal as overly lenient. In May 2018, US President Donald Trump announced that the US would cease waiving sanctions and withdraw from the agreement.

English | ISBN: 3111018105 | 2023 | 690 pages | EPUB, PDF | 4 MB + 6 MB
The burden of this book is twofold. The first half is charged with identifying and critiquing the many prejudices and misconceptions that inform popular – and even scholarly – perceptions of Islam and Iran, those rooted in neo-conservative hostility no less than those arising out of pro-regime apologetics or (what we will argue are) misleading "post-modern" methodologies. This is a key component of our overall investigation, both because the illusions occluding our view of the Islamic Republic are (we assert) piled so high and deep, and because setting the record straight on many a contentious issue is the most appropriate context for elucidating the
