Islam in German East Africa, 1885-1918 A Genealogy of Colonial Religion

Free Download Jörg Haustein, "Islam in German East Africa, 1885-1918: A Genealogy of Colonial Religion "
English | ISBN: 3031274229 | 2023 | 451 pages | PDF | 10 MB
In this rich and multi-layered deconstruction of German colonial engagement with Islam, Jörg Haustein shows how imperial agents in Germany’s largest colony wielded the knowledge category of Islam in a broad set of debates, ranging from race, language, and education to slavery, law, conflict, and war. These representations of ‘Mohammedanism’, often invoked for particular political ends, amounted to a serious misreading of Muslims in East Africa, with significant long-term effects. As the first in-depth account of the politics of Islam in German East Africa, the book makes an essential contribution to the history of religion in Tanzania before British rule. It also offers a template for re-reading the colonial archive in a manner that recovers Muslim agency beyond a European paradigm of religion.

Islam as Political Religion The Future of an Imperial Faith

Free Download Islam as Political Religion: The Future of an Imperial Faith By Shabbir Akhtar
2010 | 312 Pages | ISBN: 0415781469 | PDF | 2 MB
This comprehensive survey of contemporary Islam provides a philosophical and theological approach to the issues faced by Muslims and the question of global secularisation. Engaging with critics of modern Islam, Shabbir Akhtar sets out an agenda of what his religion is and could be as a political entity. Exploring the views and arguments of philosophical, religious and political thinkers, the author covers a raft of issues faced by Muslims in an increasingly secular society. Chapters are devoted to the Qur’an and Islamic literature; the history of Islam; Sharia law; political Islam; Islamic ethics; and political Islam’s evolving relationship with the West. Recommending changes which enable Muslims to move from their imperial past to a modest role in the power structures of today’s society, Akhtar offers a detailed assessment of the limitations and possibilities of Islam in the modern world. Providing a vision for an empowered yet rational Islam that distances itself from both Islamist factions and Western secularism, this book is an essential read for students and scholars of Islamic studies, religion, philosophy and politics.

Inquisition in Early Islam The Competition for Political and Religious Authority in the Abbasid Empire

Free Download John P. Turner, "Inquisition in Early Islam: The Competition for Political and Religious Authority in the Abbasid Empire "
English | ISBN: 1780761643 | 2013 | 248 pages | PDF | 4 MB
In 833 CE, the Abbasid Caliph al-Ma’mun began a period of inquisition (mihna), one which continued until his successor al-Mutawakkil decreed its end, fifteen years later. During this period, the Caliphs in power strove to promote ‘correct belief’ in the ‘createdness’ of the Qur’an, thus ordering the interrogation of religious scholars on the subject and disqualifying, beating or even executing those who answered incorrectly. Here, John P. Turner examines and analyses this major episode, viewing it as the pivotal point for the era in question and ultimately for the state of relations between the temporal authorities and religious law. Inquisition in Early Islam focuses on the shifting control over matters of belief and orthodoxy, from the Caliph to the religious scholars, and explores the relationships between heresy, power and the articulation and definition of law and doctrine. Turner does so by exploring the mihna within its context, asking questions such as, why was it so pivotal? Why was it begun? Why did it end? When did the meaning of the Caliph’s position in society shift?

Gender, Islam and Sexuality in Contemporary Indonesia

Free Download Monika Arnez, "Gender, Islam and Sexuality in Contemporary Indonesia "
English | ISBN: 9819956587 | 2024 | 236 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This Open Access book explores the complex interplay between gender, Islam and sexuality in Indonesia, the country with the world’s largest Muslim population. The authors offer a fresh look at the tensions between the local and the global through a wide range of cultural expressions and productions, including fashion, Islamic dating, popular literature, and videos on YouTube. The book is grouped around three core themes: sexuality and violence, halal lifestyle, and shame and self-determination. The first section unpacks how activists and progressive religious scholars have argued for the need for the Sexual Violence Bill and it examines the ambivalence between criminalisation and care towards LGBTQ+ people. In the second, the authors bring new insights into how local expressions of Islam, gender and sexuality are negotiated in an increasingly globalised world. The contributions on the third theme tackle gender roles and mobility in culturally diverse regions such as Hong Kong,Taiwan, Singapore, the US, and Indonesia.

English | ISBN: 1933764155 | 2017 | 226 pages | EPUB | 6 MB
The world is at a crossroads today. A tiny minority of Muslims seems to be bent on hijacking the religion of Islam and bringing it into perpetual conflict with the rest of the world. Because of their actions, very few non-Muslims understand the real difference between Islam as it has always been, and the distorted perversions of Islam today. This book is an attempt to positively say what Islam actually is – and always was – as well as what it is not.

Fitna Guerre Au Coeur De L’Islam

Free Download Fitna: Guerre Au Coeur De L’Islam By Gilles Kepel
2004 | 380 Pages | ISBN: 2070712974 | PDF | 8 MB
