The Role of Moral Reasoning on Socioscientific Issues and Discourse in Science Education

Free Download Dana L. Zeidler, "The Role of Moral Reasoning on Socioscientific Issues and Discourse in Science Education"
English | 2003 | pages: 305 | ISBN: 1402038550 | PDF | 1,8 mb
Norman G. Lederman I remember moving into my graduate student office at Syracuse University in 1979 as if it was yesterday. Directly across the hall was another graduate student office with the door closed. On the door was an index card with the following quote: Nothing happened in 1945 except that we changed the scale of our indifference to man; and conscience, in revenge, for an instant became immediate to us. Before the immediacy fades in a sequence of televised atomic tests, let us acknowledge our subject for what it is: civilization face to face with its own implications. The implications are both the industrial slum which Nagasaki was before it was bombed, and the ashy desolation which the bomb made of the slum. And 1 civilization asks of both ruins, ‘Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t Ma Baby?’ The quotation focused around an individual’s viewing and reaction to the destruction in Nagasaki following the dropping of a nuclear bomb. The quote was from Bronowski’s Science and Human Values and it was pasted to the door of Dana Zeidler’s office. What goes around comes around in educational circles and I was unavoidably reminded of the quotation on Dana’s door when reading this volume in preparation for the writing of this Foreword. I am not simply reminiscing about my first day as a PhD student, but rather I think the Bronowski quote cuts to the core of the text you are about to read.

Mental Health Issues and the University Student

Free Download Mental Health Issues and the University Student By Doris Iarovici
2014 | 264 Pages | ISBN: 1421412713 | PDF | 2 MB
Young adults enter college with many challenges―complicated family dynamics, identity issues, and extreme pressure to succeed, among others. Students may also have mental health difficulties, ranging from adjustment disorders to mood disorders, and growing numbers of them are seeking help on campus. But these students are also resilient and eager to learn, stepping onto campus with hope for a new and better phase of life. Doris Iarovici, a psychiatrist at Duke University Counseling and Psychological Services, sees in college and university mental health services an opportunity for mental health professionals to bring about positive change with young people during a crucial period of their development. Dr. Iarovici describes the current college mental health crisis and narrates how college mental health services have evolved along with changes in student populations. She discusses students’ lifestyle problems and psychiatric concerns, using case vignettes to explore a variety of interventions. Included are discussions of substance abuse, relationship difficulties, eating disorders, depression and anxiety, and culture clashes. Problems uniquely addressed in this book include sleep disturbances and perfectionism. An essential component of the volume is a guide to making emergency assessments, from risk classification and hospitalization to public safety and communication within and outside the campus community.
