To Destroy a City Strategic Bombing and Its Human Consequences in World War II

Free Download Herman Knell, "To Destroy a City: Strategic Bombing and Its Human Consequences in World War II"
English | 2003 | pages: 384 | ISBN: 0306811693 | EPUB | 4,2 mb
Herman Knell was nineteen and living in Würtzburg in March of 1945 when hundreds of Allied planes arrived overhead, unleashing a torrent of bombs on the city. Würtzburg’s tightly packed medieval housing exploded in a firestorm, killing six thousand people in one night and destroying 92 percent of the city’s structures. Despite the fact that Würtzburg had no strategic value, the city emerged from World War II second only to Dresden in material destruction inflicted from the air. The experience led Knell to years of research on the history, development, and effects of the strategy of area bombing. To Destroy a City is the result of the author’s long and unrelenting investigation. His analysis of this form of warfare, which reached its zenith during World War II, covers the history and the development of wide-area bombing since 1914, examines its wartime effectiveness and the consequences. But the extra dimension that Knell’s book offers is his firsthand experience of the tension, fear, tentative defiance, and, finally, utter catastrophe of being on the receiving end of overwhelming air power. For Americans, who fortunately did not experience bombing during the war, this is essential reading.

Contextualizing Indigenous Knowledge in Africa and its Diaspora

Free Download Felisters Jepchirchir Kiprono Ibigbolade Aderibigbe, Alloy Ihuah, "Contextualizing Indigenous Knowledge in Africa and its Diaspora"
English | ISBN: 1443878405 | 2015 | 265 pages | PDF | 1075 KB
This volume proposes a wholesale adoption of African Indigenous Knowledge Systems (AIKS) as a paradigm for Africas renewal and freedom from the whims of foreign interests. These systems, as argued here, involve balancing short-term thinking and immediate gratification with longer-term planning for future generations of Africans and the continents diaspora. The book will be of interest to anyone concerned with development studies in Africa and its diaspora, as it offers plausible solutions to Africas chronic developmental problems that can only be provided from within Africa, rather than through the intervention of external third parties. As such, it provides vital contributions to the ongoing search for viable answers to the challenges that Africa faces today.

The Ontology of the Analytic Tradition and Its Origins ; Realism and Identity in Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, and Quine

Free Download The Ontology of the Analytic Tradition and Its Origins ; Realism and Identity in Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, and Quine By jan Dejnozka
1996 | 368 Pages | ISBN: 0822630532 | PDF | 20 MB
The analytic movement advertised its ‘linguistic turn’ as a radical break from the two-thousand-year-old substance tradition. But this is an illusion. On the fundamental level of ontology, there is enough reformulation and presupposition of traditional ‘no entity without identity’ themes to analogize Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, and Quine to Aristotle as paradigmatic of modified realism. Thus the pace of ontology is glacial. Frege and Russell, not Wittgenstein and Quine, emerge as the true analytic progenitors of ‘no entity without identity,’ offering between them at least twenty-nine private language arguments and sixty-four ‘no entity without identity’ theories.

Text Mining and its Applications Results of the NEMIS Launch Conference

Free Download Text Mining and its Applications: Results of the NEMIS Launch Conference by Spiros Sirmakessis (Assistant Professor)
English | PDF | 2004 | 207 Pages | ISBN : 3540202382 | 20.8 MB
The world of text mining is simultaneously a minefield and a gold mine. It is an exciting application field and an area of scientific research that is currently under rapid development. It uses techniques from well-established scientific fields (e.g. data mining, machine learning, information retrieval, natural language processing, case based reasoning, statistics and knowledge management) in an effort to help people gain insight, understand and interpret large quantities of (usually) semi-structured and unstructured data. Despite the advances made during the last few years, many issues remain umesolved. Proper co-ordination activities, dissemination of current trends and standardisation of the procedures have been identified, as key needs. There are many questions still unanswered, especially to the potential users; what is the scope of Text Mining, who uses it and for what purpose, what constitutes the leading trends in the field of Text Mining -especially in relation to IT- and whether there still remain areas to be covered.
