The Japanese Communist Party Permanent Opposition, but Moral Compass

Free Download Peter Berton, "The Japanese Communist Party: Permanent Opposition, but Moral Compass "
English | ISBN: 0415368863 | 2018 | 146 pages | EPUB | 467 KB
This book provides an historical overview of the Japanese Communist Party from its foundation to the present. It outlines the development of the party, explores its stance on key issues and discusses how the party has set a high moral tone, avoiding compromising coalitions with other parties, being intolerant of corruption within its own ranks, and frequently and consistently opposing the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. The book also considers the internal nature of the party, which continues to have a mass membership, and which in recent years has softened its former somewhat rigid approach. The book emphasizes the importance for Japan of this moral approach as the conscience of the nation, especially as the present Abe government moves Japan to the right, even though the Japanese Communist Party has never gained power and is never likely to.

The Japanese Colonial Empire, 1895-1945

Free Download The Japanese Colonial Empire, 1895-1945 edited by Mark R. Peattie, Ramon H. Myers
English | March 21, 1984 | ISBN: 0691053987, 0691102228 | True EPUB/PDF | 560 pages | 11.7/56.1 MB
These essays, by thirteen specialists from Japan and the United States, provide a comprehensive view of the Japanese empire from its establishment in 1895 to its liquidation in 1945. They offer a variety of perspectives on subjects previously neglected by historians: the origin and evolution of the formal empire (which comprised Taiwan, Korea, Karafuto. the Kwantung Leased Territory, and the South Seas Mandated Islands), the institutions and policies by which it was governed, and the economic dynamics that impelled it. Seeking neither to justify the empire nor to condemn it, the contributors place it in the framework of Japanese history and in the context of colonialism as a global phenomenon.

Japanese Poetry and Its Publics From Colonial Taiwan to Fukushima

Free Download Japanese Poetry and Its Publics: From Colonial Taiwan to Fukushima By Dean Anthony Brink
2017 | 188 Pages | ISBN: 1138304026 | PDF | 3 MB
This book aims to explore precisely how modern Japanese poetry has remained central to public life in both Japan and its former colony of Taiwan.Though classical Japanese poetry has captivated the imagination of Asian studies scholars, little research has been conducted to explore its role in public life as a discourse influential in defining both the modern Japanese empire and contemporary postcolonial negotiations of identity. This book shows how highly visible poetry in regular newspaper columns and blogs have in various historical situations in Japan and colonial Taiwan contested as well as promoted diverse colonial imaginaries. This poetry reflects both contemporary life and traditional poetics with few counterpoints in Western media. Methodologically, this book offers a defense of the public influence of poetry, each chapter enlisting a wide range of social and media theorists from Japan, Europe, and North America to explore specific historical moments in an original recasting of intertextuality as a vital feature of active inter-evental material engagements. In this book, rather than recite a standard survey of literary movements and key poets, the approach taken is to examine uses of poetry shown not only to support colonialism and imperialism, emerging objectionable forms of exploitation as well as the destruction of ecologies (including old-growth forests in Taiwan and the Fukushima Disaster), but also to present a medium of resistance, a minor literature for registering protest, forming transnational affiliations, and promoting grass-roots democracy. The book is based on years of research and fieldwork partially in conjunction with the production of a documentary film, Horizons of the Rising Sun:?Postcolonial Nostalgia and Politics in the Taiwan Tanka Association Today (2017).About the AuthorDean Anthony Brink, Associate Professor, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, National Chiao Tung University

Surviving a Japanese Internment Camp Life and Liberation at Santo Tomás, Manila, in World War II

Free Download Surviving a Japanese Internment Camp: Life and Liberation at Santo Tomás, Manila, in World War II by Rupert Wilkinson
English | November 20, 2013 | ISBN: 0786465700 | 248 pages | EPUB | 15 Mb
During World War II the Japanese imprisoned more American civilians at Manila’s Santo Tomas prison camp than anywhere else, along with British and other nationalities. Placing the camp’s story in the wider history of the Pacific war, this book tells how the camp went through a drastic change, from good conditions in the early days to impending mass starvation, before its dramatic rescue by U.S. Army "flying columns." Interned as a small boy with his mother and older sister, the author shows the many ways in which the camp’s internees handled imprisonment-and their liberation afterwards. Using a wealth of Santo Tomas memoirs and diaries, plus interviews with other ex-internees and veteran army liberators, he reveals how children reinvented their own society, while adults coped with crowded dormitories, evaded sex restrictions, smuggled in food, and through a strong internee government, dealt with their Japanese overlords. The text explores the attitudes and behavior of Japanese officials, ranging from sadistic cruelty to humane cooperation, and asks philosophical questions about atrocity and moral responsibility.
