English | 2023 | ISBN: 9811987254 | 611 Pages | PDF (True) | 25 MB
In the context of mounting challenges stemming from a rapid transformation of the urban-regional landscapes in many Asian countries, this book highlights a multifaceted array of issues that increasingly engage the academic and planning communities in search of viable solutions to complex problems facing us. Even though cities continue to dominate development studies, urbanization of Asia is evolving toward a hybrid urban-rural nexus beyond the cities. This volume considers these shifting dynamics of Asian urbanization, including urban spatial transformations and their ramifications in the context of sustainability and planning. Through the lens of a set of empirical studies across diverse disciplines, geographies and methodologies. yet with an overarching concern for sustainability in varied (but interconnected) areas such as climate change, land use planning, infrastructure and urban mobility, and quality of life, these studies examine a range of important topics (e.g., flooding, transportation, housing, open space/ green space, urban garden and such) in city/regional settings. Together, they add insights into varied transformational processes or patterns at work on the urban-regional landscapes in a number of Asian countries while offering innovative approaches or alternatives. The proposed volume fills a gap in urban/regional studies in context of South and Southeast Asia that will be of interest to all stakeholders (e.g., planners, administrators, academicians and the citizenry), particularly those interested in sustainability and planning paradigms. It should be a timely and valuable addition to the Asian urbanization literature.

Plant Diversity in Biocultural Landscapes

Free Download Plant Diversity in Biocultural Landscapes
English | 2023 | ISBN: 9811986487 | 715 Pages | PDF (True) | 22 MB
The edited book highlights comprehensive studies on plant diversity dynamics, ecosystem processes, and best conservation practices from the interdisciplinary perspectives such as the botanists, ecologists, conservation biologists, geneticists, cell biologists, molecular biotechnologists, and social scientists. The main focus of the book is to address biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse amidst the escalating climate change problems, aggravated by anthropogenic activities in biocultural landscapes. The book describes the biocultural landscape of today, ecology of plant diversity, botany of keystone and other rare species of economic and pharmaceutical significance, ecosystem processes, conservation, and emerging frameworks to sustain biocultural landscapes in the Anthropocene. Biocultural landscapes are tracks of land in many parts of the world, shaped by unique human-nature interactions. Many of these landscapes are populated with indigenous peoples with a unique way of life including their interaction with plants and the environment. The relationship between humans and nature in biocultural landscapes used to be harmonious. However, as the human population surges, much pressure has been experienced by the landscape, hence, the loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystem services that cascade to agricultural systems. The book is of interest to teachers, professors, policymakers, researchers, and advocates in the fields of botany, ecology, taxonomy, biodiversity conservation, environmental science, molecular biology and genomics, molecular ecology, agriculture, and Agri-tourism, forestry, social science, and climate change professionals. Also, the book serves as a good reference and additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate students.

Linguistic Landscapes A Sociolinguistic Approach

Free Download Linguistic Landscapes: A Sociolinguistic Approach
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1107177545 | 377 Pages | PDF | 32 MB
Visible language is widespread and familiar in everyday life. We find it in shop signs, advertising billboards, street and place name signs, commercial logos and slogans, and visual arts. The field of linguistic landscapes draws on insights from sociolinguistics, language policy and semiotics to show how these public forms of language relate to multiple issues in language policy, language rights, language and education, language and culture, and globalization. Stretching from the earliest stone inscriptions, to posters and street signs, and to today’s electronic media, linguistic landscapes sit at the crossroads of language, society, geography, and visual communication. Written by one of the pioneers of the field, this is the first book-length synthesis of this exciting, rapidly-developing field. Using photographic evidence from across three continents, it demonstrates the methodology and approaches used, and summarises its findings and developments so far. It also seeks to answer common questions from its critics, and to suggest new directions for further study.

Rivers and Society Landscapes, Governance and Livelihoods

Free Download Rivers and Society: Landscapes, Governance and Livelihoods By Malcolm Cooper, Abhik Chakraborty, Shamik Chakraborty
2017 | 257 Pages | ISBN: 1138930903 | PDF | 25 MB
Rivers and their watersheds constitute some of the most dynamic and complex landscapes. Rivers have sustained human communities, and human societies have utilized and altered river flows in a number of ways for millennia. However, the level of human impact on rivers, and on watershed environments, has become acute during the last hundred years or so.This book brings together empirical research and theoretical perspectives on the changing conditions of a range of river basin environments in the contemporary world, including the history and culture of local societies living in these river basins. It provides theoretical insights on the patterns and nature of the interaction between rivers and their use by human communities. The chapters are written from a variety of positions, including environmental science, hydrology, human ecology, urban studies, water management, historical geography, cultural anthropology and tourism studies. The case studies span different geographical regions, providing valuable insight on the multifaceted interactions between rivers and our societies, and on the changing riverscapes in different parts of the world. Specific detailed examples are included from Australia, Brazil, France, India, Iran, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, UK and USA.

Modern Approaches to the Visualization of Landscapes (RaumFragen Stadt – Region – Landschaft)

Free Download Modern Approaches to the Visualization of Landscapes (RaumFragen: Stadt – Region – Landschaft) By Dennis Edler (editor), Corinna Jenal (editor), Olaf Kühne (editor)
2021 | 577 Pages | ISBN: 3658309555 | PDF | 22 MB
The volume deals with the effects of digitization on spatial and especially landscape construction processes and their visualization. A focus lies on the generation mechanisms of ‘landscapes’ with digital tools of cartography and geomatics, including possibilities to model and visualize non-visual stimuli, but also spatial-temporal changes of physical space. Another focus is on how virtual spaces have already become part of the social and individual construction of landscape. Potentials of combining modern media of spatial visualization and (constructivist) landscape research are discussed.
