In 1807, Britain and the United States passed legislation limiting and ultimately prohibiting the transoceanic slave trade. As world powers negotiated anti-slave-trade treaties thereafter, British, Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian, French, and US authorities seized ships suspected of illegal slave trading, raided slave barracoons, and detained newly landed slaves. The judicial processes in a network of the world’s first international courts of humanitarian justice not only resulted in the "liberation" of nearly two hundred thousand people but also generated an extensive archive of documents. Liberated Africans and the Abolition of the Slave Trade, 1807-1896 makes use of these records to illuminate the fates of former slaves, many of whom were released from bondage only to be conscripted into extended periods of indentured servitude.Essays in this collection explore a range of topics related to those often referred to as "Liberated Africans"-a designation that, the authors show, should be met with skepticism. Contributors share an emphasis on the human consequences for Africans of the abolitionist legislation. The collection is deeply comparative, looking at conditions in British colonies such as Sierra Leone, the Gambia, and the Cape Colony as well as slave-plantation economies such as Brazil, Cuba, and Mauritius. A groundbreaking intervention in the study of slavery, abolition, and emancipation, this volume will be welcomed by scholars, students, and all who care about the global legacy of slavery.

English | ISBN: 1527566773 | 2021 | 170 pages | PDF | 9 MB
In just over a monththat is from mid-December 1944 to mid-January 1945two crucial Allied invasions in Luzon (the northern geographical region of the Philippines) turned the tide in Americas favour in its attempt to liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation. One invasion was on Mindoro Island, south of Manila, while the other was on the Lingayen Gulf and its environson the west coast of Luzon, north of Manila. While the battle of Lingayen Gulf may still have been successful without the assistance of the newly completed air facilities on Mindoro Island, this made the battle a little easier for the Allies. This publication covers the preparation for the invasion of Mindoro Island and its successful operation. In addition, it discusses the huge invasion of the Lingayen Gulf. Particular emphasis is given to the damage caused by the Kamikaze on the hundreds of Allied ships that took part in the Battle of Lingayen Gulf Because the Japanese occupation of the Philippines was such a brutal episode in the War in the Pacific, a section of this book is also devoted to Japanese war crimes. Not all the war criminals involved in atrocities in the Philippines are examined here, but, rather, only those high-ranking officers deemed responsible in some way.

The Struggle for Cooperation Liberated France and the American Military, 1944-1946

During World War II, French citizens expressed that the German occupiers behaved more "correctly" than the American combat troops who replaced them. In The Struggle for Cooperation: Liberated France and the American Military, 1944-1946, author Robert L. Fuller presents a unique perspective on the relations between France and the United States during the Second World War. Until the summer of 1944, the German Army made real efforts to fare well with the French to make their occupation duties easier. The Americans also tried to get along with the French; however, American GIs were subjected to looser discipline than German soldiers. Most GIs behaved appropriately, but the small number who did not created an unfavorable impression among the French―which created tension, mutual feelings of suspicion and dislike, and occasional displays of outright hostility. Yet, because the war against the Axis powers was also France’s war, most French, especially officials, wanted to work cooperatively with the Americans to play their part in winning it.
