Free Download Elizabeth Priester Steding, "GDR Literature in German Curricula and Textbooks: Exploring the Legacy of GDR Authors, 1985-2015 "
English | ISBN: 3031390504 | 2023 | 206 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book analyzes the changing portrayal of GDR literature in German Gymnasium textbooks 1985-2015. Addressing the need for textbook research to broaden its focus from GDR history to GDR literature, the author presents case studies of well-known GDR authors (Bertolt Brecht, Johannes R. Becher, Anna Seghers, Wolf Biermann, and Christa Wolf), each examining a particular aspect of the societal discourse about GDR literature and the tension between (literary) text and (historical) context. Taken together, the case studies reveal the frequently underestimated power of ideology in literature textbooks. They also show how attempts to package these authors into simplified categories ultimately reveal the profound complexities of the GDR literary legacy. By examining the clear tension between literature and politics in textbooks and curricula, the author demonstrates how ideological messages are transmitted in all textbooks, as well as the importance of attending to overt and covert ideology.

Forgotten engagements women, literature and the Left in 1930s France

Free Download Forgotten engagements : women, literature and the Left in 1930s France By Kershaw, Angela
2007 | 306 Pages | ISBN: 9042021691 | PDF | 2 MB
This study is the first to examine the contribution made by women writers to politically committed literature in 1930s France. Its purpose is to bring to light the work of female authors of left-wing fiction whose novels are comparable to those of well-known male practitioners of ‘littérature engagée’. It analyses the novels of Madeleine Pelletier, Simone Téry, Edith Thomas, Henriette Valet and Louise Weiss in the context of the inter-war models of committed literature in relation to which they were produced. Consideration of this body of fictional texts, not previously brought together by literary historians, shows how women were able to relate to fiction and to politics in inter-war France. Situating the novels in relation to their social, historical, literary and political environment, the book makes an important contribution to the literary and cultural history of twentieth century France. The analysis of inter-war political writing by women calls into question the usual criteria against which women’s writing tends to be evaluated by feminist scholarship. The book will appeal to readers with an interest in women’s writing, political writing, and the development of French literature in the first half of the twentieth century. Free Download Michaela Nicole Raß, "Europe in Upheaval: Identity in Politics, Literature and Film"
English | ISBN: 3476058824 | 2022 | 192 pages | PDF | 5 MB
This volume on the term "Europe" is based on a conference that took place in the winter of 2018 at the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation in Munich. Europe in its complexity, in its character of radical change and its power of fascination is of unbroken topicality. At the same time, European identity is endangered by current challenges such as populism and the rise of nationalism. The contributions to the conference address the question of the extent to which contemporary literature and also current films react to these upheavals and to what extent the talk of a crisis in Europe or European integration is perceptible in the areas of literature and film.

Ethnographic Narratives as World Literature Uneven Entanglements in European and South Asian Writing

Free Download Lucio De Capitani, "Ethnographic Narratives as World Literature: Uneven Entanglements in European and South Asian Writing "
English | ISBN: 3031387031 | 2023 | 288 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This book links world-literary studies with anthropology and ethnography. It shows how ethnographic narratives can represent a compelling point of departure for world-literary explorations. The volume compares the travel writing and fiction of Robert Louis Stevenson and Rudyard Kipling as colonial ethnographic narratives; the militant writings of Carlo Levi and Mahasweta Devi; and the travelogues and ethnographic fiction of Amitav Ghosh and the literary journalism of Frank Westerman. Each of these readings focuses on a set of social, political and historical circumstances and relies on a dialogue with anthropological theory and history. This book demonstrates how imperialism, colonialism, capitalism and ecology are interdependent, and contributes to methodological debates within both anthropology and world-literary studies.

Which author had the heaviest brain? What was the original title of 1984? When did cigarettes first appear in English literature? And, while we’re at it, who wrote the first Western, and is there any link between asthma and literary genius? Sutherland’s irreverent literary exploration illuminates every topic imaginable from author advances to Civil War literature to Victorian sex to odd things eaten by literary characters (think Patrick Bateman’s girlfriend in American Psycho). This is a treasure trove of fascinating information for all book lovers.

Classicism of the twenties art, music, and literature

Free Download Classicism of the twenties : art, music, and literature By Ziolkowski, Theodore
2015 | 237 Pages | ISBN: 022618398X | PDF | 2 MB
The triumph of avant-gardes in the 1920s tends to dominate our discussions of the music, art, and literature of the period. But the broader current of modernism encompassed many movements, and one of the most distinct and influential was a turn to classicism. In Classicism of the Twenties, Theodore Ziolkowski offers a compelling account of that movement. Giving equal attention to music, art, and literature, and focusing in particular on the works of Stravinsky, Picasso, and T. S. Eliot, he shows how the turn to classicism manifested itself. In reaction both to the excesses of neoromanticism and early modernism and to the horrors of World War I-and with respectful detachment-artists, writers, and composers adapted themes and forms from the past and tried to imbue their own works with the values of simplicity and order that epitomized earlier classicisms. By identifying elements common to all three arts, and carefully situating classicism within the broader sweep of modernist movements, Ziolkowski presents a refreshingly original view of the cultural life of the 1920s.

Badiou and Deleuze Read Literature

Free Download Badiou and Deleuze Read Literature By Jean-Jacques Lecercle
2010 | 213 Pages | ISBN: 0748638008 | PDF | 2 MB
Why do philosophers read literature? How do they read it? Does their philosophy derive from their reading of literature? If so, to what extent? Anyone who reads contemporary European philosophers has to ask such questions. Lecercle demonstrates that philosophers need literature, as much as literary critics need philosophy: it is an exercise not in the philosophy of literature, where literature is a mere object of analysis, but in philosophy and literature, a heady and unusual mix.

Au seuil de la modernité Proust, literature and the arts essays in memory of Richard Bales

Free Download Au seuil de la modernité : Proust, literature and the arts : essays in memory of Richard Bales By Harkness, Nigel; Schmid, Marion; Proust, Marcel; Bales, Richard
2011 | 324 Pages | ISBN: 3039118919 | PDF | 19 MB
This volume of essays, which is dedicated to the late Richard Bales, one of the doyens of Proust studies, considers Proust’s pivotal role at the threshold of modernity, between nineteenth- and twentieth-century forms of writing and thinking, between the Belle Epoque and the First World War, between tradition and innovation. More than just a temporal concept, this threshold is theorized in the volume as a liminal space where borders (geographical, artistic, personal) dissolve, where greater possibilities for artistic dialogue emerge, and where unexpected encounters (between artists, genres and disciplines) take place. Working both backwards and forwards from the publication dates of A la recherche du temps perdu (1913-27), the seventeen essays written specially for this volume take as their focus Proust’s manifold engagements with the world of modernity, as well as intermedial relations among the generations of artists before and immediately after him. Looking back to the nineteenth century, the undisputed starting point for nascent forms of modernity in Western art and literature, and a period that was uniquely formative for the young Proust, they also offer insights into inter-artistic dialogue in Surrealist and post-Surrealist painting and poetry
