Contemporary philosophy is interested in questions of luck and moral responsibility. Christian theology is largely unconcerned with luck because of its understanding of the creatureliness of the will. This understanding is rooted in story of the primal sin the narrative about how the first good creature chose wrongly. When considered philosophically, this story produces a problem for describing how a good creature can sin in ideal circumstances. The tradition has appealed to a voluntarist account of the devil’s sin as a satisfying response to this problem. But some have worried that this kind of free choice succumbs to a responsibility denying kind of luck. This volume describes how this underlying story undermines worries about luck for Christian moral reasoning by reflecting on how any luck the devil has is his own. John R. Gilhooly argues that even if one regards the Devil as fictional, the primal sin remains an interesting philosophical test case, particularly for questions of moral luck. The reason that this is so is because it seems that moral luck is either irrelevant to moral judgment of the Devil, or an illegitimate moral concern at least as regards the primal sin.

Miller’s Luck

Free Download Roland Perry, "Miller’s Luck"
English | 2006 | pages: 519 | ISBN: 1741662222, 1740513975 | EPUB | 1,5 mb
Keith Ross Miller was named after two adventurous aviators and went on to be one himself. He was all things to all men, and women. Miller was a person of style, charm and grace, a lover of opera and classical music, yet with the common touch. Born of a humble Australian background, he was blessed with outstanding looks, a sonorous voice, freakish athletic skills, and attitude. That attitude encompassed courage and character. Miller played Aussie Rules football and cricket for his original State (Victoria), joined the RAAF in 1942 and became a Mosquito night fighter pilot over European skies with the RAF. After the war he developed quickly into the greatest all-round cricketer Australia ever produced. His brilliance as a batsman, bowler and fielder ranked him easily with W.G. Grace, Garry Sobers and Ian Botham in the pantheon of the sport’s finest all-rounders. Miller was appreciated by the British even more than Australians for his cavalier approach to war as a pilot, and cricket. He is one of just three Australians to have their portraits hung in the Long Room at Lord’s, along with Don Bradman and Victor Trumper. Miller was loved by the masses and the mighty. He was never far from a bet or a beer, a contest or an attractive woman. One of his innumerable conquests was said to be Princess Margaret, the current Queen’s late sister. She was believed to have summoned him for more than tea at Kensington Palace. The anecdotes about this true legend are endless, and as Richie Benaud remarked at his funeral, they are ‘all true.’ According to myriad mates, Keith Miller was ‘larger than life.’ There has never been a more talented, charismatic or popular sportsman. He was, as Neville Cardus noted, ‘An Australian in Excelsis.’

Luck, Leisure, and the Casino in Nineteenth-Century Europe

Free Download Luck, Leisure, and the Casino in Nineteenth-Century Europe: A Cultural History of Gambling
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009393545 | 227 Pages | PDF | 11 MB
Gambling was central to the cultural, social, and intellectual history of nineteenth-century Europe. By tracing the evolution of gambling and investigating the spatial qualities of the casino, this book reveals how Europeans used gambling to understand their changing world. The development of resorts and the architectural qualities of casinos demonstrate how new leisure practices, combined with revolutions in transportation and communication, fashioned resort gambling in the Rhineland and Riviera. Jared Poley explores the importance of casino gambling in people’s lives, probing how gambling and fate intersected. The casino impacted understandings of the body, excited emotions, and drove the ‘psychology’ of the gambler, as well as affecting ideas about probability, chance, and luck. Ultimately, this book addresses the fundamental question of what gambling was for, and how it opened up opportunities to understand theories about aggression, play, and human development.
