Legends and Stories from Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Block Island

VINLAND, Claudia and Cabo de la Arenas have been but a few of the previous names given to Cape Cod. As far back as 985AD the Cape had been visited by the likes of Leif Eiriksson, although this is disputed, Giovanni da Verrazzano (1524AD), Estêvão Gomes (1525AD), Samuel de Champlain (1606AD), Bartholomew Gosnold (1602AD), Henry Hudson (1609AD) and Captain John Smith (1614AD). It was Gosnold who had the honor and privilege of being the final arbiter of the Cape’s name in 1602AD. With such a long history it is therefore not surprising that much has been written and said about Cape Cod. Herein readers will find 23 such stories, collected from various sources, with origins in Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Cape Cod and Block Island. Stories like THE HEADLESS SKELETON OF SWAMPTOWN, THE CROW AND CAT OF HOPKINSHILL, THE OLD STONE MILL, THE WINDAM FROGS, MOODUS NOISES and many more. Appropriately, the book is commenced with a facsimile of THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT and ends with THE STORY OF KING PHILIP, Grand Sachem and Chief of the Wampanoag Tribe. MARTHA’S VINEYARD, called "Noepe" by the Native Americans, which in their picturesque language means "In the Midst of the Sea," is the largest island on the south-eastern coast of Massachusetts. However, there are those who correctly point out that there is no such place as Martha’s Vineyard, except in geography and common speech. That it’s correct name is Martin Wyngaard’s Island, so was named by Skipper Block, an Albany Dutchman. Sea fog is not uncommon in the area. When a fog started rising the Native Americans would say, "Here comes old Maushope’s smoke"-but you will have to read the book to find out just why they say this.

English | 2018 | ISBN: 1732179611 | EPUB | pages: 487 | 2.9 mb
The years from approximately 1924 to 1955, in which the evolving manuscript of the Urantia revelation was shared with a small group in Chicago called the Forum, is an intriguing period in the history of the Urantia Book and its readership. Only one source of extensive and detailed information about this period has come to light: the diaries and letters of bestselling author Harold M. Sherman and his wife Martha. During their stay in Chicago, from 1942 to 1947, the Shermans recorded what was said and done at every Forum meeting they attended. They also recorded their conversations with their Forum friends outside Forum meetings. Their diligent documenting resulted in close to two thousand pages of eyewitness accounts which portray Forum life with unmatched vividness and immediacy.

English | 2018 | ISBN: 1732179638 | EPUB | pages: 476 | 2.8 mb
This volume documents a full year of Urantia-related activity as witnessed by Harold and Martha Sherman and described in their diaries and letters. During this year, 1943, the Shermans continue to attend the weekly Forum meetings almost without fail and to record their recollections soon afterward. Feeling unjustly blamed by Dr. Sadler for the so-called rebellion the previous summer, they share their frustrations with their few friends in the Forum, and confide their growing doubts about the Doctor’s trustworthiness as custodian of the Urantia papers. Their closest confidante remains Harry J. Loose, now in failing health but still providing advice and instruction through long, frequent letters. The year culminates with Loose’s death, which Harold and Martha perceive as opening a new era in their lives. 1943 is also a busy year for Harold career-wise, as he continues his pursuits as author and playwright, and becomes host of his own radio program in Chicago.

The Urantia Diaries of Harold and Martha Sherman Volume Six 1955-1998

English | 2021 | ISBN: 1734462132 | EPUB | pages: 757 | 8.5 mb
This last volume of The Urantia Diaries of Harold and Martha Sherman spans four decades; it begins with the Shermans’ receiving the just-published The Urantia Book in October 1955 and ends with Martha’s death in 1998, Harold predeceasing her in 1987.This volume follows not only the parallel tracks of the slowly growing Urantia readership and the later stages of Harold’s career, but also the intersections-the Shermans’ witting and unwitting encounters with Urantia Book readers and those otherwise connected with the book.In his lectures and classes Harold occasionally mentioned the Urantia Book and his association with it, which brought inquiries from those interested in learning more. He had periodically considered writing about his Urantia experiences ever since Harry Loose instructed him and Martha to keep a diary to be used in an eventual book about Urantia which would be a companion to the Urantia Book itself. But it wasn’t until he was reaching the end of his career that he decided to write a book about his lifelong search for truth and include a chapter on Urantia. That chapter, called "Pipeline to God," was included in How to Know What to Believe, published as a Fawcett paperback in 1976.How to Know What to Believe was one of Harold’s less successful books and went out of print a few years after publication. (We have included the entire "Pipeline to God" chapter in this volume.) But the book attracted the attention of American author Martin Gardner, who contacted Martha Sherman in 1992. Martha granted him access to the Sherman diaries (which Harold had barely used while writing "Pipeline to God") and much of Harold’s correspondence. In his 1995 book, Urantia: The Great Cult Mystery-the first popular book about Urantia ever published-Gardner mentioned that the Sherman diaries, housed with other Sherman materials at the University of Central Arkansas, would be made available to the public in January 2000. It was this notice that led to our publication of The Urantia Diaries of Harold and Martha Sherman.
