The Mathematical Theory of Turbulence

"I do not think at all that I am able to present here any procedure of investiga tion that was not perceived long ago by aZl men of talent; and I do not promise at all that you can find here anything quite new of this kind. But I shall take pains to state in clear words the pules and ways of investigation which are followed by able men, who in most cases are not even conscious of follow ing them. Although I am free from illusion that I shall fully succeed even in doing this, I stiZl hope that the little that is present here may please some people and have some application afterwards. " Bernard Balzano (Wissenschaftslehre, 1929) The following book results from a series of lectures on the mathematical theory of turbulence delivered by the author at the Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics during the past several years, and represents, in fact, a comprehensive account of the author’s work with his graduate students in this field. It was my aim in writing this book to give engineers and scientists a mathematical feeling for a subject, which because of its nonlinear character has resisted mathematical analysis for many years. On account viii of its refractory nature this subject was categorized as one of seven "elementary catastrophes". The material presented here is designed for a first graduate course in turbulence. The complete course has been taught in one semester.

English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 200 Pages | ISBN : 3031332024 | 15.8 MB
This textbook invites readers to explore mathematical thinking by finding the beauty in the subject. With an accessible tone and stimulating puzzles, the author will convince curious non-mathematicians to continue their studies in the area. It has an expansive scope, covering everything from probability and graph theory to infinities and Newton’s method. Many examples of proofs appear as well, offering readers the opportunity to explore these topics with the amount of rigor that suits them. Programming exercises in Python are also included to show how math behaves in action.

Mathematical Aspects in Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics

Free Download Mathematical Aspects in Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics by Róbert Kovács, Patrizia Rogolino, Francesco Oliveri
English | PDF | 2023 | 92 Pages | ISBN : 3036577629 | 1.5 MB
Non-equilibrium thermodynamics is a relatively new field of research, and one which is also becoming increasingly important in engineering applications. However, despite the many approaches developed in recent decades, they all raise questions from a mathematical point of view, for instance on the proper definitions of initial and boundary conditions, analytical and numerical solution methods, and geometrical background. These questions cover numerous topics, including the mathematical analysis of various thermodynamic approaches, the investigation of the resulting governing equations, symmetry analysis of the solutions, and how the numerical methods can be built on the geometrical background. The aim of this Special Issue is to discuss and present up-to-date problems that may not be constrained to the previously mentioned aspects but must be connected to non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Thus, in the present Special Issue we aim to present the open mathematical questions on and characteristics of different thermodynamic approaches.

Interfacial Fluid Mechanics A Mathematical Modeling Approach

Free Download Interfacial Fluid Mechanics: A Mathematical Modeling Approach by Vladimir S. Ajaev
English | PDF | 2012 | 219 Pages | ISBN : 1461413400 | 3.3 MB
Interfacial Fluid Mechanics: A Mathematical Modeling Approach provides an introduction to mathematical models of viscous flow used in rapidly developing fields of microfluidics and microscale heat transfer. The basic physical effects are first introduced in the context of simple configurations and their relative importance in typical microscale applications is discussed. Then, several configurations of importance to microfluidics, most notably thin films/droplets on substrates and confined bubbles, are discussed in detail. Topics from current research on electrokinetic phenomena, liquid flow near structured solid surfaces,evaporation/condensation, and surfactant phenomena are discussed in the later chapters.

The Mathematical Neighborhoods of School Mathematics

Free Download The Mathematical Neighborhoods of School Mathematics
by Bass, Hyman;

English | 2023 | ISBN: 1470472473 | 364 pages | True PDF | 8.12 MB
The Mathematical Neighborhoods of School Mathematics visits regions beyond, but proximal to and accessible from school mathematics. Its aim is to give readers a glimpse of not just the rich diversity and adaptability of mathematics, but, most importantly, its interconnections and overall coherence, a perspective not easily available from the school curriculum. This aim entailed assembling a variety of substantial mathematical domains that do not typically cohabit the same volume. The book begins with an in-depth treatment of topics in the school curriculum, often with novel approaches and connections. A unifying thread is the group theoretic study of addition and multiplication in the various number systems of school mathematics. The exposition is mathematically rigorous, including proofs of many fundamental theorems not otherwise easily available in mathematically accessible form. The Mathematical Neighborhoods of School Mathematics is intended to be a conceptual contribution to mathematics education. It will be a valuable resource in professional development of mathematics teachers, and in mathematical enrichment programs, for both students and teachers. In this regard, many of the chapters are relatively self-contained. It could also serve as a text for undergraduate mathematics majors with an interest in teaching. The exceptional Chapter 11 presents some novel instructional designs for problem-solving activities meant to cultivate "connection-oriented mathematical thinking." Hyman Bass is the Samuel Eilenberg Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education at the University of Michigan. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the National Academy of Education. Jason Brasel, a former high school mathematics teacher, is a mathematics educator and researcher in secondary mathematics, who works at TeachingWorks, University of Michigan.

Structural Mathematical Modeling Applications in Technological Machines and Transportation Vehicles

Free Download Structural Mathematical Modeling Applications in Technological Machines and Transportation Vehicles
by Eliseev Andrey

English | 2023 | ISBN: 1668472384 | 302 pages | True PDF EPUB | 70.74 MB
As technology continues to advance, the complexity of technological machines and transportation vehicles increases, presenting new challenges in assessing their dynamic properties. A thorough explanation of new forms of construction of mathematical models that take into account the potential occurrence of new standard links in the initial oscillatory structures is needed for a comprehensive solution to the challenges posed by the dynamics of machines. Structural Mathematical Modeling Applications in Technological Machines and Transportation Vehicles by Andrey Eliseev evaluates solutions on how to accurately assess the dynamic properties of modern machines. Eliseev’s in-depth analysis of the interconnectedness of the processes of studying the state of the technical object, evaluating its dynamic properties, and solving specific problems of dynamic interaction of machine elements provides a unique perspective on the challenges posed by machine dynamics. This book is an essential resource for specialists in the field of research, design, and calculations of technical objects exposed to dynamic loads, as well as students and postgraduates of technical specialties related to the application of system analysis and mathematical modeling.
