The Role of Moral Reasoning on Socioscientific Issues and Discourse in Science Education

Free Download Dana L. Zeidler, "The Role of Moral Reasoning on Socioscientific Issues and Discourse in Science Education"
English | 2003 | pages: 305 | ISBN: 1402038550 | PDF | 1,8 mb
Norman G. Lederman I remember moving into my graduate student office at Syracuse University in 1979 as if it was yesterday. Directly across the hall was another graduate student office with the door closed. On the door was an index card with the following quote: Nothing happened in 1945 except that we changed the scale of our indifference to man; and conscience, in revenge, for an instant became immediate to us. Before the immediacy fades in a sequence of televised atomic tests, let us acknowledge our subject for what it is: civilization face to face with its own implications. The implications are both the industrial slum which Nagasaki was before it was bombed, and the ashy desolation which the bomb made of the slum. And 1 civilization asks of both ruins, ‘Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t Ma Baby?’ The quotation focused around an individual’s viewing and reaction to the destruction in Nagasaki following the dropping of a nuclear bomb. The quote was from Bronowski’s Science and Human Values and it was pasted to the door of Dana Zeidler’s office. What goes around comes around in educational circles and I was unavoidably reminded of the quotation on Dana’s door when reading this volume in preparation for the writing of this Foreword. I am not simply reminiscing about my first day as a PhD student, but rather I think the Bronowski quote cuts to the core of the text you are about to read.

Nathan Wise explores the three events in detail and reveals how-despite the vast differences in military forces, wars, regions of the world, and eras-the soldiers involved all shared a common sense of justice and responded in remarkably similar ways.

Free Download Studies on Moral Competence: Proposals and Dilemmas for Discussion
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031521382 | 253 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 7.4 MB
This book shows how to use discussions of moral dilemmas as a strategy to develop moral competence in children and youth in educational environments using the Konstanz Method of Dilemma Discussion (KMDD). This method was developed by the German psychologist Georg Lind (1847-2021), who defines moral competence as an ability to solve problems and conflicts based on moral principles or values, through reflection, dialogue and deliberation, instead of using force, violence, deception and manipulation. According to Lind, this ability can be developed in children and youth through KMDD.

English | ISBN: 3031310810 | 2023 | 283 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Serving in the military is often a disruptive event in the lives of those who join, precipitating a reassessment of the service member’s ethical sensibilities or, tragically, resulting in lasting moral injury and trauma. The military experience compels them to navigate multiple identities, from citizen to warrior and back. Their religious identity, sometimes rooted in a civilian religious community, can be altered by military participation.

Moral Dimensions Permissibility, Meaning, Blame

Free Download T. M. Scanlon, "Moral Dimensions: Permissibility, Meaning, Blame"
English | 2010 | pages: 262 | ISBN: 0674057457, 0674031784 | PDF | 0,8 mb
In a clear and elegant style, T. M. Scanlon reframes current philosophical debates as he explores the moral permissibility of an action. Permissibility may seem to depend on the agent’s reasons for performing an action. For example, there seems to be an important moral difference between tactical bombing and a campaign by terrorists―even if the same number of non-combatants are killed―and this difference may seem to lie in the agents’ respective aims. However, Scanlon argues that the apparent dependence of permissibility on the agent’s reasons in such cases is merely a failure to distinguish between two kinds of moral assessment: assessment of the permissibility of an action and assessment of the way an agent decided what to do.

Moral Development and Reality Beyond the Theories of Kohlberg, Hoffman, and Haidt

Free Download Moral Development and Reality: Beyond the Theories of Kohlberg, Hoffman, and Haidt By John C. Gibbs
2013 | 384 Pages | ISBN: 0199976171 | PDF | 3 MB
Moral Development and Reality explores the nature of moral development, human behavior, and social interconnections. The exploration elucidates the full range of moral development, from superficial perception to a deeper understanding and feeling through social perspective-taking. By comparing, contrasting, and going beyond the key theories of preeminent thinkers Lawrence Kohlberg, Martin Hoffman, and Jonathan Haidt, author John C. Gibbs tackles vital questions: What exactly is morality and its development? Can the key theoretical perspectives be integrated? What accounts for prosocial behavior, and how can we understand and treat antisocial behavior? Does moral development, including moments of moral inspiration, reflect a deeper reality? This third edition of Moral Development and Reality is thoroughly updated, refined, and expanded. A major addition to this volume is the attention to the work of Jonathan Haidt, a prominent theorist who studies the psychological bases of morality across cultures and political ideologies. Gibbs is authoritative with respect to Kohlberg’s, Hoffman’s, and Haidt’s theories, thanks in good measure to his privileged position, having worked or been acquainted with all three of these key figures for decades. A new foreword by David Moshman introduces the third edition, calling it "the most important contribution to the study of moral development since the turn of the century." Moral Development and Reality will have broad appeal across academic and applied disciplines, especially education and the helping professions. With its case studies and chapter questions, it also serves as a text in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in social/developmental psychology and human development.

Mass moralizing marketing and moral storytelling

Free Download Mass moralizing : marketing and moral storytelling By Hopkins, Phil
2015 | 247 Pages | ISBN: 0739188518 | PDF | 2 MB
Mass Moralizing: Marketing and Moral Storytelling examines the narratives of today’s brand marketing, which largely focuses on creating an emotional attachment to a brand rather than directly promoting a product’s qualities or features. Phil Hopkins explores these narratives’ influence on how we think about ourselves and our moral possibilities, our cultural ideas about morality, and our relations to each other. He closely studies the relationship between three interrelated dynamics: the power of narrative in the construction of identity and world, the truth-telling pretenses of mass marketing, and the growth of moralizing as the primary moral discourse practice in contemporary consumer culture. Mass Moralizing scrutinizes the way marketing speaks to us in explicitly moralistic terms, significantly influencing how we think about ourselves and our moral possibilities.
