Free Download Japan’s National Identity and Foreign Policy: Russia as Japan’s "Other" By Alexander Bukh
2009 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 0415450551 | PDF | 2 MB
This book is the first attempt to examine Japan’s relations with Russia from the perspective of national identity; providing a new interpretation of Japan’s perceptions of Russia and foreign policy.Alexander Bukh focuses on the construction of the Japanese self using Russia as the other, examining the history of bilateral relations and comparisons between the Russian and Japanese national character. The first part of the book examines the formation of modern Japan’s perceptions of Russia, focusing mainly on the Cold War years. The second part of the book examines how this identity construction has been reflected in Japan’s economic, security and territorial dispute related policy towards post-Soviet Russia.Providing not only a case study of the Japan-Russia relationship, but also engaging in a critical examination of existing International Relations frameworks for conceptualizing the relationship between national identity and foreign policy, the appeal of the book will not be limited to those interested in Japanese/Russian politics but will also be of interest to the broader body of students of International Relations.

Crime Fiction and National Identities in the Global Age Critical Essays

Free Download Crime Fiction and National Identities in the Global Age: Critical Essays By Julie H. Kim (editor)
2020 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 1476677158 | PDF | 7 MB
To read a crime novel today largely simulates the exercise of reading newspapers or watching the news. The speed and frequency with which today’s bestselling works of crime fiction are produced allow them to mirror and dissect nearly contemporaneous socio-political events and conflicts. This collection examines this phenomenon and offers original, critical, essays on how national identity appears in international crime fiction in the age of populism and globalization. These essays address topics such as the array of competing nationalisms in Europe; Indian secularism versus Hindu communalism; the populist rhetoric tinged with misogyny or homophobia in the United States; racial, religious or ethnic others who are sidelined in political appeals to dominant native voices; and the increasing economic chasm between a rich and poor. More broadly, these essays inquire into themes such as how national identity and various conceptions of masculinity are woven together, how dominant native cultures interact with migrant and colonized cultures to explore insider/outsider paradigms and identity politics, and how generic and cultural boundaries are repeatedly crossed in postcolonial detective fiction.

Thucydides on War and National Character

Free Download Thucydides on War and National Character By Robert Dean Luginbill
1999 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0813336449 | PDF | 5 MB
Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War is one of the classics of ancient military writing, and one of the first truly historical narratives of any kind. In terms of its objective approach to warfare and contemporary political events, Thucydides’ account of the epic clash between Athens’ empire and Sparta’s Peloponnesian League is unequalled in its ability to bring the history of ancient Greece to life.In this book, Robert Luginbill explores Thucydides’ concept of national character and its relation to humankind’s tendency towards war. He investigates Thucydides’ theories on personal and national behavior in times of stress, with an eye for the lessons to be learned in modern times. Luginbill also analyzes the psychological framework behind the History, explicating the origins of the Peloponnesian War within Thucydides’ distinct historiographical system, the patterns of individual behavior which account for (and restrain) aggression, and the formation of larger patterns of collective behavior which Thucydides saw as the ultimate cause of war.

Indonesian Syariah Defining a National School of Islamic Law

Free Download M. Barry Hooker, "Indonesian Syariah: Defining a National School of Islamic Law"
English | 2008 | pages: 368 | ISBN: 9812308024 | PDF | 7,4 mb
The creation of a national school of Islamic law in Indonesia has been on the legal agenda for the past fifty years. This book is a summary of what has been achieved. The material shows us a complex range of references for syariah. These include the formal structures of a "new fiqh", philosophies of law, transmissions of syariah through tertiary curricula and the Friday sermon in mosques, a bureaucratic form for conducting the Hajj, and contemporary debates on syariah values as expressions of public morality. Together these references indicate just how elusive the meaning of syariah has become in contemporary Indonesia.

Yugoslavia without Yugoslavs The History of a National Idea

Free Download Božidar Jezernik, "Yugoslavia without Yugoslavs: The History of a National Idea"
English | ISBN: 1805390430 | 2023 | 342 pages | PDF | 100 MB
The term "Yugoslavia" first appeared in an article in the newspaper Slovenija in Ljubljana on Friday, October 19, 1849. The author of the article declared that he was not interested in politics, but only in the literary unification of Yugoslavs within the Austro-Hungary Empire. With ongoing conflicts and disparate forms of nationalism in and around historical Yugoslavia as its backdrop, Yugoslavia without Yugoslavs for the first time addresses the history and idea of a united Yugoslavia in and during which a true "Yugoslav" identity never really came into being . Following a series of wars and uprisings from 1875 onwards, the first nation-state of Southern Slavs, established after World War I, became the "Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes" ― a competing nationalistic blender that would go through failure, revival and transformation of the concept of "Yugoslavia".
