Free Download Iain Boal, Janferie Stone, "West of Eden: Communes and Utopia in Northern California"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1604864273, 1604867183 | PDF | pages: 321 | 13.2 mb
In the shadow of the Vietnam War, a significant part of an entire generation refused their assigned roles in the American century. Some took their revolutionary politics to the streets, others decided simply to turn away, seeking to build another world together, outside the state and the market. West of Eden charts the remarkable flowering of communalism in the 1960s and ’70s, fueled by a radical rejection of the Cold War corporate deal, utopian visions of a peaceful green planet, the new technologies of sound and light, and the ancient arts of ecstatic release. The book focuses on the San Francisco Bay Area and its hinterlands, which have long been creative spaces for social experiment. Haight-Ashbury’s gift economy-its free clinic, concerts, and street theatre-and Berkeley’s liberated zones-Sproul Plaza, Telegraph Avenue, and People’s Park-were embedded in a wider network of producer and consumer co-ops, food conspiracies, and collective schemes.

Encounters and Practices of Petty Trade in Northern Europe, 1820-1960 Forgotten Livelihoods

Free Download Jutta Ahlbeck, "Encounters and Practices of Petty Trade in Northern Europe, 1820-1960: Forgotten Livelihoods"
English | ISBN: 3030980790 | 2022 | 367 pages | PDF | 17 MB
This open access book uncovers one important, yet forgotten, form of itinerant livelihoods, namely petty trade, more specifically how it was practiced in Northern Europe during the period 1820-1960. It investigates how traders and customers interacted in different spaces and approaches ambulatory trade as an arena of encounters by looking at everyday social practices. Petty traders often belonged to subjugated social groups, like ethnic minorities and migrants, whereas their customers belonged to the resident population. How were these mobile traders perceived and described? What goods did they peddle? How did these commodities enable and shape trading encounters? What kind of narratives can be found, and whose? These questions pertaining to daily practices on a grass-root level have not been addressed in previous research.

Children of the Northern Forest Wild New England’s History from Glaciers to Global Warming [Audiobook]

Free Download Jamie Sayen, Stephen Caffrey (Narrator), "Children of the Northern Forest: Wild New England’s History from Glaciers to Global Warming"
English | ASIN: B0CQZ2ZB6Z | 2024 | MP3@64 kbps | ~11:31:00 | 327 MB
Jamie Sayen approaches the story of northern New England’s undeveloped forests from the viewpoints of the previously unheard: the forest and the nonhuman species it sustains, the First Peoples, and, in more recent times, the disenfranchised human voices of the forest, including those of loggers, mill workers, and citizens who, like Henry David Thoreau, wish to speak a kind word for nature.
From 1988 to 2016 paper companies sold their timberlands and closed seventeen paper mills in northern New England. Policy makers ceded veto power to large absentee landowners, who tried to preserve the status quo by demanding additional tax cuts and other subsidies for economic elites. They vetoed measures designed to restore and preserve forest health; at present, about half of the former industrial forests are classified as degraded, and the regional economy continues to be trapped in low-value commodity markets.
