Numbers as Political Allies The Census in Jammu and Kashmir

Free Download Vikas Kumar, "Numbers as Political Allies: The Census in Jammu and Kashmir"
English | ISBN: 1009317210 | 2024 | 400 pages | PDF | 8 MB
Numbers as Political Allies analyses the state sponsored headcounts in Jammu and Kashmir as public goods, collective self-portraits, and symbols of modernity. It explores how census statistics are impacted by their administrative, legal and political-economic contexts. The book guides the reader through the entire lifecycle of headcounts from the administrative manoeuvring at the preparatory stage to the partisan use of data in policymaking and public debates. Using the case of Jammu and Kashmir, it explains how our ability to examine data quality is limited by the paucity of metadata and estimates the magnitudes of coverage and content errors in the census process. It argues that Jammu and Kashmir’s data deficit is shaped by and shapes ethno-regional, communal, and scalar contests across different levels of governance and compares its census experience with other states to discuss possible reforms to enhance public trust in the census.

Minorities and Small Numbers from Molecules to Organisms in Biology Toward a New Understanding of Biological Phenomena

Free Download Minorities and Small Numbers from Molecules to Organisms in Biology: Toward a New Understanding of Biological Phenomena by Takeharu Nagai, Yuichi Togashi
English | EPUB (True) | 2018 | 151 Pages | ISBN : 9811320829 | 8.9 MB
This book provides an accessible introduction to an exciting new field of life science in which the focus is on small numbers of molecules and minorities within cell populations and their significance for the understanding of biological phenomena. Numbers, or quantitative data, are attracting more attention in cell biology following, for example, determination of the absolute copy number of each protein species in each bacterial cell and the recognition of leader cells that drive collective cell migration. Within this context, the authors present recent advances in experimental techniques, biological findings, and theories. A variety of cutting-edge topics and issues are addressed, with explanation of the ways in which recent developments in the field cast light on seemingly straightforward but difficult-to-answer questions. Readers will learn that we are on the verge of a paradigm shift as the importance of cooperation among groups of molecules in live cells is acknowledged. The book is designed to be enjoyable to read and easy to understand. It will be of interest for a wide range of readers, including young researchers and undergraduate/high school students.

The Values in Numbers Reading Japanese Literature in a Global Information Age

Free Download The Values in Numbers: Reading Japanese Literature in a Global Information Age by Hoyt Long
English | June 15, 2021 | ISBN: 0231193513 | 376 pages | PDF | 9.19 Mb
Ideas about how to study and understand cultural history―particularly literature―are rapidly changing as new digital archives and tools for searching them become available. This is not the first information age, however, to challenge ideas about how and why we value literature and the role numbers might play in this process. The Values in Numbers tells the longer history of this evolving global conversation from the perspective of Japan and maps its potential futures for the study of Japanese literature and world literature more broadly.
