The Split Economy Saint Paul Goes to Wall Street

Starting with Marx and Freud, scholars have attempted to identify the primary ethical challenge of capitalism. They have named injustice, inequality, repression, exploitative empires, and capitalism’s psychic hold over all of us, among other ills. Nimi Wariboko instead argues that the core ethical problem of capitalism lies in the split nature of the modern economy, an economy divided against itself. Production is set against finance, consumption against saving, and the future against the present. As the rich enjoy their lifestyle, their fellow citizens live in servitude. The economy mimics the structure of our human subjectivity as Saint Paul theorizes in Romans 7: the law constitutes the subject as split, traversed by negativity. The economy is split, shot through with a fundamental antagonism. This fundamental negativity at the core of the economy disturbs its stability and identity, generating its destructive drive.

This volume is a collection of 33 essays, sermons, and contemporaneous addresses by Paul L. Lehmann, a highly influential theological voice of the twentieth century. Lehmann was a close friend of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a student and friend of Reinhold Niebuhr, and a longtime colleague of James Cone. One of the first American readers of Karl Barth, Lehmann’s work also influenced early liberation theologies throughout the world. The works included here span the years 1938-1998 and are organized around the following themes: the direction of theology today (I); the revolutionary dimension of the gospel (II); the future of theology in a post-Christian world (III); and Dietrich Bonhoeffer: a theological friendship (IV). The works contained in this volume were written to address a particular context yet remain surprisingly relevant for today.

The First Edition of the Letters of Paul

Free Download Charles Vergeer, "The First Edition of the Letters of Paul"
English | ISBN: 1527578038 | 2022 | 345 pages | PDF | 5 MB
We call them "the Letters of Paul". However, who really wrote them, and why? The fascinating quest for an answer to this question takes us to Ephesus, one of the most important harbour cities of the Roman Empire, in order to get a clearer picture through him of the anonymous editors who edited the first edition of what would later, so inappropriately, be called the letters of Paul. These first editors saved Paul from oblivion, but often ignored what he had actually said. What did they want to achieve with their publication? Who added the anti-Jewish and misogynistic texts and who added the beautiful song about the praise of love? This book offers a spectacular reconstruction of the first edition of Paul’s letters. It removes two thousand years of Christian encrustation on the surviving texts, and produces a unique reconstruction and critical translation from the Greek of the first edition of the first four letters of Paul.

Rethinking Paul

Free Download Edwin Chr. van Driel, "Rethinking Paul "
English | ISBN: 1108742599 | 2023 | 416 pages | PDF | 3 MB
In this book, Edwin van Driel analyzes contemporary Pauline exegesis and its implications for Protestant theology. Over the last several decades, scholars have offered fresh interpretations of the apostle, including the New Perspective on and the apocalyptic reading of Paul. Van Driel juxtaposes these proposals with traditional Protestant understandings of Paul and argues that the crucial difference between these two readings lies not in how one understands isolated Pauline notions but in different assumed narrative substructures of the apostle’s writings. He explores how these new exegetical proposals deepen, broaden, enrich, and challenge traditional Protestant theological paradigms, as well as how they are situated alongside current contextual conversations on theological anthropology, social imagination, and the church’s mission. Van Driel’s volume opens up new avenues for interdisciplinary exploration and cooperation between biblical scholarship and theology.

Paul Ricoeur in the Age of Hermeneutical Reason Poetics, Praxis, and Critique

Free Download Roger W. H. Savage, "Paul Ricoeur in the Age of Hermeneutical Reason: Poetics, Praxis, and Critique "
English | ISBN: 073919173X | 2015 | 232 pages | EPUB | 952 KB
Poetics, Praxis and Critique: Paul Ricoeur in the Age of Hermeneutical Reason addresses contemporary problems of justice, the recognition of disabled persons, the role of imagination in political judgment, the need for religious hospitality and carnal hermeneutics. The essays in this volume are a testament to the power of hermeneutical reason. Following Paul Ricoeur’s style of philosophizing, they explore innovative solutions to pressing issues of our time. Individually, these essays advance new perspectives on the anthropological presuppositions behind the requirement of justice, the role played by convictions and beliefs in pluralistic contexts, and the place of a post-critical religious faith. Together, they demonstrate the value of a hermeneutical mode of reasoning in an age in which conflicts, tensions and violence abound. Their thoughtful engagement with current challenges attests to this volume’s conviction that we, with others, have the ability to intervene in the course of the world to the benefit of all.

Paul, Women, and the Meaning of Silence A Contextual Reading of 1 Corinthians 1434-35

English | ISBN: 1433194899 | 2023 | 292 pages | EPUB, PDF | 2 MB + 21 MB
The definition of silence is essential to the interpretation of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. What did Paul mean when he silenced women in church? In Paul, Women, and the Meaning of Silence, author Alex S. Carr compares the Greek verb Paul used for silence with other ancient Greek sources containing the same term. Through this comparison, he demonstrates consistency within 1 Corinthians and the other Pauline letters. Through comparison with other passages in the New Testament, Carr also demonstrates that these passages do not contradict the type of silence in 1 Corinthians 14.

Paul Ricœur’s Moral Anthropology is a guide for readers who are interested in Paul Ricœur’s thoughts on morals in general, bringing together the different aspects of what Geoffrey Dierckxsens understands as Ricœur’s moral anthropology. This anthropology addresses the question what it means to be human, capable of participating in moral life. Dierckxsens argues that Ricœur shows that this participation implies being a self, living a singular lived existence with others and being responsible in institutions of justice. Through experiencing life one comes to learn taking moral decisions and the reasons for moral life.
