How should liberal democratic governments respond to citizens as religious believers whose values, norms and practices might lie outside the cultural mainstream? Some of the most challenging political questions arising today focus on the adequacy of a policy of ‘live and let live’ liberal toleration in contexts where disputes about the metaphysical truth of conflicting world-views abound. Does liberal toleration fail to give all citizens their due? Do citizens of faith deserve a more robust form of accommodation from the state in the form of ‘recognition’? This issue is far from settled. Controversies over the terms of religious accommodation continue to dominate political agendas around the world. This is the first edited collection to provide a sustained examination of the politics of toleration and recognition in an age of religious pluralism. The aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001 have dramatised the urgency of this debate. It has also surfaced, nationally and globally, in disputes about terrorism, security and gender and human rights questions in relation to minority communities. This volume brings together a group of new and established scholars from the fields of law and philosophy, who all present fresh and challenging perspectives on an urgent debate. It will be indispensable reading for advanced researchers in political and legal philosophy, religious and cultural studies and related disciplines."This timely volume consists of essays exploring a much under-examined aspect of contemporary debates about multiculturalism, namely, the challenge of religious pluralism. Wide-ranging, nuanced, and illuminating, the chapters take up such important themes as the relationship between religious toleration and the politics of recognition; between religious groups and minority cultures; and between religious pluralism and policies of multiculturalism. The contributors usefully draw on recent examples of dilemmas of religious tolerance and intolerance in liberal democratic states, and several ask about the interface of law and religious practices. This collection reflects the best of current critical thinking about the ethical, legal, and political dimensions of religious pluralism in diverse liberal societies that democratic theory has to offer."Monique DeveauxPolitical Science DepartmentWilliam CollegeU.S.A."The volume makes a vital contribution to debates about religion in political theory. Beginning with the concepts of tolerance and accommodation, the authors critically assess key conceptual tools used by liberal democracies to address religious diversity. The result is a series of essays that comprehensively address one of the most pressing issues in contemporary society. This volume approaches religious diversity in a uniquely complex and coherent manner." "Exploring a wide range of subject matter in rich theoretical context, the authors consider such issues as polygamy, shari’a, religious autonomy, multiculturalism, and secularism"Lori Beaman Department of Classics and Religious StudiesUniversity of OttawaCanada

Privatization and the New Medical Pluralism Shifting Healthcare Landscapes in Maya Guatemala

Free Download Anita Chary, "Privatization and the New Medical Pluralism: Shifting Healthcare Landscapes in Maya Guatemala"
English | ISBN: 1498505376 | 2015 | 226 pages | EPUB | 1396 KB
Privatization and the New Medical Pluralism is the first collection of its kind to explore the contemporary terrain of healthcare in Guatemala through reflective ethnography. This volume offers a nuanced portrait of the effects of healthcare privatization for indigenous Maya people, who have historically endured numerous disparities in health and healthcare access. The collection provides an updated understanding of medical pluralism, which concerns not only the tensions and exchanges between ethnomedicine and biomedicine that have historically shaped Maya people’s experiences of health, but also the multiple competing biomedical institutions that have emerged in a highly privatized, market-driven environment of care. The contributors examine the macro-structural and micro-level implications of the proliferation of non-governmental organizations, private fee-for-service clinics, and new pharmaceuticals against the backdrop of a deteriorating public health system. In this environment, health seekers encounter new challenges and opportunities, relationships between the public, private, and civil sectors transform, and new forms of inequality in access to healthcare abound. This volume connects these themes to critical studies of global and public health, exposing the strictures and apertures of healthcare privatization for marginalized populations in Guatemala.

Author: Christian R. Burset
Narrator: Perry Daniels

For many years, Britain tried to impose its own laws on the peoples it conquered, and English common law usually followed the Union Jack. But the common law became less common after Britain emerged from the Seven Years’ War as the world’s most powerful empire. At that point, imperial policymakers adopted a strategy of legal pluralism: some colonies remained under English law, while others retained much of their previous legal regimes. As legal historian Christian R. Burset argues, determining how much English law a colony received depended on what kind of colony Britain wanted to create.

Przewalski’s Horses in Eurasia Pluralism in International Reintroduction Biology

Free Download Michael L. Zukosky, "Przewalski’s Horses in Eurasia: Pluralism in International Reintroduction Biology"
English | ISBN: 1498521355 | 2016 | 116 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
Przewalski’s Horses in Eurasia draws on more than two years of ethnographic research to examine the reintroduction of Prezewalski’s horses-a highly endangered breed that is a genetically distinct and distant relative of today’s domesticated horses-into their native habitats across Eurasia. Zukosky explores how pluralism in species reintroduction provides insights into the experiences, relationships, and knowledge required for future international collaborations to better capture the complexity of both nature and society in scientific practice. The book includes philosophical discussions of pluralism in narrative, ethnographic studies of biologists’ observations of changing horse behavior from European captive conditions to release in the wild in Asia, and ethnographic accounts of local non-scientists’ sentiments about the benefits and disadvantages of reintroduction in central Mongolia. Recommended for scholars of anthropology and biology.

This volume is the first attempt to explicitly investigate how the multiplicity of religions and forms of spirituality interconnect with the multiplicities of language, such as digital lingo and the language of science. This book analyzes how religious and linguistic multiplicities become a pluralism, that is, how they enter into polyphonic relations, as well as how they interconnect, grow together, and why they often clash. The contributors are renown international scholars working in interreligious dialogue, philosophy and sociology of religion, history of religious arts, and the crossroads of religion and science.

Respect, Pluralism, and Justice is a series of essays which sketches a broadly Kantian framework for moral deliberation, and then uses it to address important social and political issues. Hill shows how Kantian theory can be developed to deal with questions about cultural diversity, punishment, political violence, responsibility for the consequences of wrongdoing, and state coercion in a pluralistic society.
