Orthodoxy in the Agora Orthodox Christian Political Theologies Across History

Free Download Mihai-D. Grigore, "Orthodoxy in the Agora: Orthodox Christian Political Theologies Across History "
English | ISBN: 3525302568 | 2024 | 431 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The radical socio-political changes in the wake of the fall of communism in many predominantly Orthodox countries of Eastern and Southeastern Europe have triggered an intense interest in formulating a specifically Orthodox Christian political theology in various forms. The present volume focuses on these developments, but also offers a panorama of the evolution of Orthodox political theologies across time, from early Byzantium until today. The contributions examine their historical background, consider their specific parameters, and critically assess their particular features. Given that political theology has a much more robust history within Western Christianity, some contributions contextualise the topic more broadly by comparing Orthodox with Western Christian political theologies. Considering that the analysis of the Orthodox side has been mostly neglected or ignored in the past, this volume aims at filling a serious gap in the related research.

Nuclear Test Ban Converting Political Visions to Reality

Free Download S. Mykkeltveit, Hein Haak, "Nuclear Test Ban: Converting Political Visions to Reality"
English | 2009 | pages: 284 | ISBN: 9048177510 | PDF | 8,8 mb
Nuclear tests have caused public concern ever since the first such test was conducted, more than six decades ago. During the Cold War, however, con- tions were not conducive to discussing a complete ban on nuclear testing. It was not until 1993 that negotiations on such a treaty finally got under way. From then on, things moved relatively quickly: in 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). To date, the Treaty has been signed by 178 states and ratified by 144, though it has yet to enter into force, as nine out of 44 ”Annex 2 states”, whose ratification is mandatory, have not heeded the call. Nevertheless, the CTBT verification system is already provisionally operational and has proven its effectiveness. We commend the CTBT organisation in Vienna for its successful efforts to build a verification network. This book is an excellent overview of the evolution of the CTBT and its verification regime. The authors are eminent scholars from the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden who have been intimately involved with the CTBT and its verification agency, the CTBTO Preparatory Commission, from their inc- tion to the present day. They have written a thorough and engaging narrative of the long road that led to the CTBT. Their story will appeal to both the layman and the expert and provide useful lessons for future negotiations on disarmament issues.

Nigerian Women in Cultural, Political and Public Spaces

Free Download Mobolanle Sotunsa, "Nigerian Women in Cultural, Political and Public Spaces "
English | ISBN: 3031405811 | 2023 | 304 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This book will provide empirical engagements of African women in the private and public spaces and their adaptations, alterations and and integration of the private and public spaces. This approach is contrary to most existing studies which may not necessarily provide contextual and empirical evidences of the debates about the spaces of women or interrogate both the private and public spaces in a single volume. This book will offer a novel insight into gender and power dynamics, especially as it relates to the cultural spaces, private spaces and public spaces which African women occupy and subjugate. The fourteen papers in this book critically examine the African women in different positions within the private and public spaces, the strong inhibiting presence of patriarchy, and the resistance women display to empower themselves.

Neoliberal Transformation of Electricity International Political Economy of the Turkish Case

Free Download Serhan Ünal, "Neoliberal Transformation of Electricity: International Political Economy of the Turkish Case"
English | ISBN: 9819902819 | 2023 | 243 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book makes a structural analysis of the neoliberal restructuring in the global electricity industry. The book shows that the electricity liberalisation in different countries is just a reflection of the same structural trend in the global economy and avoids from both narrow country-specific and abstract global approaches by making a structural analysis completed by a case study. Thus, it aims reaching wider conclusions about how global changes in finance and ideology / knowledge structures influence domestic energy and economic policy preferences of developing countries. The book develops a taxonomy about organising principles around which the electricity industry has been structured historically and globally, and reveals drivers of change which influences the current energy transition in the electricity sector. Combining these aspects, the book uses financial and other economic data empirically, to shed light on the structural role of global transformation of the electricity markets on the domestic energy policy preferences of the developing countries. Thus, this work will be useful not only for academic purposes, but also for practitioners dealing with these issues.

Narratives of Statelessness and Political Otherness Kurdish and Palestinian Experiences

Free Download Barzoo Eliassi, "Narratives of Statelessness and Political Otherness: Kurdish and Palestinian Experiences "
English | ISBN: 3030766977 | 2021 | 315 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This book argues that citizenship is an inadequate solution to the problem of statelessness based on a critical investigation of the lived experiences of Kurdish and Palestinian diasporas in western Europe. It examines how statelessness affects identity formations, homelessness, belonging, non-belonging, otherness, voices, status, (non)recognition, (dis)respect, (in)visibility and presence in the uneven world of nation-states. It also demonstrates that the undoing of non-sovereign identities’ subjection to structural subalternization and everyday inferiorization requires rights in excess of the mere acquisition of juridical citizenship, which tends to assume national sameness. That assumption in turn involves sovereign practices of denial and assimilation of ethnic alterity. The book therefore highlights the necessity of de-ethnicizing and decolonizing unitary nation-states that are based on the politico-cultural supremacy of a single, "core" ethnicity as the sovereign legislator ofthe rules and regimes of national belonging and un-belonging. It therefore broaches questions of "majority" and "minority," mobility, nationalism, home-making, equality, difference and universalism in the context of the nation-state and illustrates how stateless peoples such as Kurds and Palestinians endure and challenge their subordinate position in a hierarchical (geo-)political order and how in so doing remain bound by political otherness.

NGOs, Policy Networks and Political Opportunities in Hybrid Regimes A Case Study of Islamic Republic of Iran

Free Download Mohsen Moheimany, "NGOs, Policy Networks and Political Opportunities in Hybrid Regimes: A Case Study of Islamic Republic of Iran "
English | ISBN: 9813362235 | 2021 | 370 pages | PDF | 7 MB
This book discusses the diversity and resilience in a hybrid regime where civil society organisations are either provided with complex sets of opportunities or face severe constraints. By studying the case of Iran between 1997 and 2013, it shows how the Islamic Republic regime went into two opposite directions under two presidencies and played in-between supporting and suppressing advocacy NGOs. After accommodating a novel theoretical framework enabling scholars to identify the contributing factors of diversity in the regime, four case-study chapters are designated for comparing the women’s rights and environmental NGOs across local and national governments. These two political and technical policy areas demonstrate the different scopes of freedoms for advocacy NGOs. The contrasting narratives of the civil activists and policymakers imply paradoxes and shifts in the arrangement of opportunities for action and advocacy, although the leadership and structure of the regime remained unchanged during the period of study.

How has it evolved historically? As the Mexican philosopher Leopoldo Zea Aguilar stated: "hardly any other society has so zealously sought for the features of its own identity."

Material figures political economy, commercial culture, and the aesthetic sensibility of Charles Baudelaire

Free Download Material figures : political economy, commercial culture, and the aesthetic sensibility of Charles Baudelaire By Baudelaire, Charles; Murphy, Margueritte S.; Baudelaire, Charles
2012 | 252 Pages | ISBN: 9042035269 | PDF | 2 MB
Ideological debates about economics and aesthetics raged hotly in nineteenth-century France. French political economy was taking shape as a discipline that would support free-market liberalism, while l’art pour l’art theories circulated, and utopian systems with aesthetic and economic agendas proliferated. Yet, as this book argues, the discourses of art and literature worked in tandem with market discourses to generate theories of economic and social order, of the model of the self-individuating and desiring subject of modernity, and of this individual’s relationship to a new world of objects. Baudelaire as a poet and art critic is exemplary: Rather than a disaffected artist, Baudelaire is shown to be a spectator desirous of both art and goods whose sensibilities reflect transformations in habits of perception. The book includes chapters on equilibrium and utility in economic and aesthetic theory, on the place of the aesthetic in press coverage of the industrial exhibitions, on the harmonic theories of Baudelaire’s early art criticism, aimed at a bourgeois audience, on Baudelaire’s radical cosmopolitanism learned through viewing "objects" on display at the Universal Exhibition of 1855, and on Les Fleurs du Mal and Le Spleen de Paris, where language makes visible the traits of a new material world
