Free Download Rachael Weiss, "Me, Myself & Prague: An Unreliable Guide to Bohemia"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 1741148200 | EPUB | pages: 316 | 0.4 mb
Armed with a romantic soul and a pressing need to escape her overbearing family, Rachael Weiss heads for Prague with vague plans to write a great novel and perhaps, just perhaps, fall madly in love with an exotic Czech man with high cheekbones. They make it seem so easy, those other women who write of uprooting themselves from everything they know, crossing the world and forming effortless friendships with strangers-despite not understanding a word they say-while reinventing themselves in beautiful European cities. So it’s not surprising that Rachael is completely unprepared for the realities that confront her in her strange new world. However, in this warm and witty tale of life in a foreign land, Rachael, somewhat to her own surprise, finds herself gradually creating a second home in Prague, complete with an eccentric and unlikely tribe of extended family and friends; and realizes along the way that while she’s been striving so hard to become someone else, she has inadvertently grown to rather like the person she has always been.

The Golem Redux From Prague to Post-Holocaust Fiction

Free Download Elizabeth R. Baer, "The Golem Redux: From Prague to Post-Holocaust Fiction"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0814336264 | PDF | pages: 241 | 5.4 mb
First mentioned in the Book of Psalms in the Hebrew Bible, the golem is a character in an astonishing number of post-Holocaust Jewish-American novels and has served as inspiration for such varied figures as Mary Shelley’s monster in her novel Frankenstein, a frightening character in the television series The X-Files, and comic book figures such as Superman and the Hulk. In The Golem Redux: From Prague to Post-Holocaust Fiction, author Elizabeth R. Baer introduces readers to these varied representations of the golem and traces the history of the golem legend across modern pre- and post-Holocaust culture. In five chapters, The Golem Redux examines the different purposes for which the golem has been used in literature and what makes the golem the ultimate text and intertext for modern Jewish writers.

Musical Boxes in Prague and Vienna

Free Download Helmut Kowar, "Musical Boxes in Prague and Vienna"
English | ISBN: 3700184328 | 2019 | 246 pages | PDF | 38 MB
During the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th century the musical boxes made by Swiss manufacturers (and there were also some active in nearby France) dominated the international market – but also in Prague and in Vienna musical boxes were made. While the Swiss products were sold worldwide, the Austrian musical boxes were made primarily for customers in the Habsburg Monarchy and in East-European countries. The manufacturers in Prague and Vienna followed an independent and different path in the construction and design of musical boxes as well as in the musical repertoire and its arrangement. The book will point out these special features of the Austrian musical boxes. Based on a survey of roughly 1300 musical boxes (the information was collected during a research project since 1980), it is possible to present here a typology and the development of the musical boxes made in Prague and Vienna, providing also sufficient photos of many details. Analyses of several music pieces accompanied by the related scores throw light on the musical repertoire and its typical arrangement. Historical facts and biographical data of the makers complement the picture of the production of musical boxes in Prague and Vienna. The topic is completed by a catalogue of the musical boxes giving detailed information on every single instrument.
