Eleusis and Enlightenment The Problem of the Mysteries in Eighteenth-Century Thought

Free Download Eleusis and Enlightenment: The Problem of the Mysteries in Eighteenth-Century Thought (Brill’s Studies in Intellectual History) by Ferdinand Saumarez Smith
English | March 28, 2024 | ISBN: 9004547541 | True PDF | 252 pages | 12.6 MB
The age of Enlightenment – the so-called age of reason – was also, paradoxically, the age of the Eleusinian mysteries. By attempting to reveal Demeter’s secret cult, British, French, and German thinkers and freemasons of the eighteenth century revealed more than they bargained for: the pagan origins of Christian doctrines such as the Trinity and the afterlife, and through the mythical gift of law and agriculture to Eleusis an alternative narrative of the origins of civilisation to that found in the Bible.

Derrida and Husserl The Basic Problem of Phenomenology

Free Download Derrida and Husserl: The Basic Problem of Phenomenology By Leonard Lawlor
2002 | 286 Pages | ISBN: 0253340497 | PDF | 4 MB
What is the nature of the relationship of Jacques Derrida and deconstruction to Edmund Husserl and phenomenology? Is deconstruction a radical departure from phenomenology or does it trace its origins to the phenomenological project? In Derrida and Husserl, Leonard Lawlor illuminates Husserl’s influence on the French philosophical tradition that inspired Derrida’s thought. Beginning with Eugen Fink’s pivotal essay on Husserl’s philosophy, Lawlor carefully reconstructs the conceptual context in which Derrida developed his interpretation of Husserl. Lawlor’s investigations of the work of Jean Cavailles, Tran-Duc-Thao, and Jean Hyppolite, as well as recent texts by Derrida, reveal the depth of Derrida’s relationship to Husserl’s phenomenology. Along the way, Lawlor revisits and sheds light on the origin of many important Derridean concepts, such as deconstruction, the metaphysics of presence, difference, intentionality, the trace, and spectrality.

The Problem of Modern Greek Identity

Free Download Georgios Arabatzis Georgios Steiris, Sotiris Mitralexis, "The Problem of Modern Greek Identity"
English | ISBN: 1443889873 | 2016 | 290 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The question of Modern Greek identity is certainly timely. The political events of the previous years have once more brought up such questions as: What does it actually mean to be a Greek today? What is Modern Greece, apart from and beyond the bulk of information that one would find in an encyclopaedia and the established stereotypes? This volume delves into the timely nature of these questions and provides answers not by referring to often-cited classical Antiquity, nor by treating Greece as merely and exclusively a modern nation-state. Rather, it approaches the subject in a kaleidoscopic way, by tracing the line from the Byzantine Empire to Modern Greek culture, society, philosophy, literature and politics. In presenting the diverse and certainly non-dominant approaches of a multitude of Greek scholars, it provides new insights into a diachronic problem, and will encourage new arguments and counterarguments. Despite commonly held views among Greek intelligentsia or the worldwide community, Modern Greek identity remains an open question and wound.

Hume’s Problem Solved The Optimality of Meta-Induction (The MIT Press)

Free Download Hume’s Problem Solved: The Optimality of Meta-Induction (The MIT Press) By Gerhard Schurz
2019 | 400 Pages | ISBN: 0262039729 | PDF | 7 MB
A new approach to Hume’s problem of induction that justifies the optimality of induction at the level of meta-induction.Hume’s problem of justifying induction has been among epistemology’s greatest challenges for centuries. In this book, Gerhard Schurz proposes a new approach to Hume’s problem. Acknowledging the force of Hume’s arguments against the possibility of a noncircular justification of the reliability of induction, Schurz demonstrates instead the possibility of a noncircular justification of the optimality of induction, or, more precisely, of meta-induction (the application of induction to competing prediction models). Drawing on discoveries in computational learning theory, Schurz demonstrates that a regret-based learning strategy, attractivity-weighted meta-induction, is predictively optimal in all possible worlds among all prediction methods accessible to the epistemic agent. Moreover, the a priori justification of meta-induction generates a noncircular a posteriori justification of object induction. Taken together, these two results provide a noncircular solution to Hume’s problem.Schurz discusses the philosophical debate on the problem of induction, addressing all major attempts at a solution to Hume’s problem and describing their shortcomings; presents a series of theorems, accompanied by a description of computer simulations illustrating the content of these theorems (with proofs presented in a mathematical appendix); and defends, refines, and applies core insights regarding the optimality of meta-induction, explaining applications in neighboring disciplines including forecasting sciences, cognitive science, social epistemology, and generalized evolution theory. Finally, Schurz generalizes the method of optimality-based justification to a new strategy of justification in epistemology, arguing that optimality justifications can avoid the problems of justificatory circularity and regress.
