The Green Room #1 Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art

Free Download The Green Room #1: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art By Maria Lind; Hito Steyerl
2008 | 239 Pages | ISBN: 1933128534 | PDF | 44 MB
Documentary practices make up one of the most significant and complex tendencies within art during the last two decades. Traditional documentary photography and film have been reinvented and reinvigorated by merging with traditions such as video, performance, and conceptual art. Such recent documentary works attest to a new diversity and complexity of forms, ranging from conceptual mockumentaries to reflexive photo essays, from split-screen slide shows to found-footage video reportage, from installations without any lens-based medium to printed matter. Many of them are about searching for suitable forms and methods for discussing social content, whether historical material or effects of recent political and economic upheaval. This anthology seeks to overcome the existing dispersion of texts on documentary practices and offer new perspectives on this crucial theme. Authors include T. J. Demos, Okwui Enwezor, Carles Guerra, Vít Havránek, Jörg Heiser, Stefan Jonsson, Maurizio Lazzarato, Olivier Lugon, Jean-Pierre Rehm, Hito Steyerl, and Jan Verwoert. They discuss issues such as what the function of documentary art forms is in the context of globalizing media and an expanding art world. What is the relationship between fact and fiction, media and mediation in these documentary practices? What role do the archive and activism play? How do the operations of documentary forms change in the age of digital reproduction? Being part of the research project "The Greenroom: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art" at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, this publication functions similar to a greenroom at a television station, where staff and guests meet before and after filming and engage in discussions which often differ from those conducted in the limelight.

During the past fifty years, both the concept and understanding of these limits have significantly changed. This book highlights that the evolution of the World System has approached a new critical milestone, moving into a fundamentally new phase of historical development, when the old economic and social technologies no longer work as efficiently as before or even begin to function counterproductively, which leads the World System into a systemic crisis.

From Independence to the U.S. Constitution Reconsidering the Critical Period of American History

Free Download From Independence to the U.S. Constitution: Reconsidering the Critical Period of American History
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0813947413 | 286 Pages | EPUB | 1.1 MB
The "Critical Period" of American history-the years between the end of the American Revolution in 1783 and the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1789-was either the best of times or the worst of times. While some historians have celebrated the achievement of the Constitutional Convention, which, according to them, saved the Revolution, others have bemoaned that the Constitution’s framers destroyed the liberating tendencies of the Revolution, betrayed debtors, made a bargain with slavery, and handed the country over to the wealthy.

Reconsidering Catholic Lay Womanhood

Free Download Kathryn G. Lamontagne, "Reconsidering Catholic Lay Womanhood "
English | ISBN: 1032267704 | 2023 | 212 pages | PDF | 12 MB
This book offers a new perspective on the often-overlooked lives of lay women in the English Roman Catholic Church. It explores how over a century ago in England some exceptional Catholic lay women – Margaret Fletcher, Maude Petre, Radclyffe Hall, and Mabel Batten – negotiated non-traditional family lives and were actively practicing their faith, while not adhering to perceived structures of femininity, power, and sexuality. Focusing on c. 1880-1930, a time of dynamism and change in both England and the Church, these remarkable women represent a rethinking of what it meant to be a lay women in the English Roman Catholic Church. Their pious transgressions demonstrate the multiplicity of ways lay women powerfully asserted aspects of their faith while contravening boundaries traditionally assumed for them in an ostensibly patriarchal religion. In fact, the Church could be a place for expressions of unconventional religiosity and reinterpretations of womanhood and domesticity. Connecting together the lives of these women for the first time, this work fills a lacuna in the scholarship of modern Catholic and gender history. Drawing from private collections and numerous archives, it illustrates the surprising range of modes of Lived Catholicism and devotion to faith. Students and scholars of Catholicism, gender, and LGBTQIA+ studies will find significant merit in a book that assigns lay women a more prominent role in the English Catholic Church and offers examples of the flexibility of Roman Catholicism.
