Reconstructing the Middle Ages Gaston Paris and the Development of Nineteenth-century Medievalism

English | ISBN: 1443800643 | 2008 | 210 pages | PDF | 1023 KB
Reconstructing the Middle Ages looks at nineteenth-century medievalism in France using as a case study Gaston Paris, philologist, literary critic and professor of medieval studies. Gaston Paris’s method, traditionally seen as a combination of romanticism and positivism, exemplifies several elements of nineteenth-century medievalism in the Parisian academia in late nineteenth-century France. The text investigates Gaston Paris’s theories about three medieval literary genres (epic, fabliaux, and Arthurian tales) to understand how Paris’s view of medieval literature and history cross-related with nationalism at a time when France was particularly vulnerable, and at which French academics were especially eager to make a long-lasting contribution. Examining the work of Gaston Paris and his interaction with other scholars in the Parisian milieu, Reconstructing the Middle Ages offers a look at academic medievalism and the history philology, linguistics and literary and textual criticism in late nineteenth-century France. In particular, the book shows that when it comes to the self-image of France, medievalism was a topic that reached far beyond the walls of academia as it was related to national pride, memory and identity.

by Helfand, David;

Atoms are unfathomably tiny. It takes fifteen million trillion of them to make up a single poppy seed―give or take a few billion. And there’s hardly anything to them: atoms are more than 99.9999999999 percent empty space. Yet scientists have learned to count these slivers of near nothingness with precision and to peer into their internal states. In looking so closely, we have learned that atoms, because of their inimitable signatures and imperturbable internal clocks, are little archives holding the secrets of the past.

The Rise and Fall of English Reconstructing English as a Discipline

Free Download The Rise and Fall of English: Reconstructing English as a Discipline By Scholes, Robert
1999 | 222 Pages | ISBN: 0300080840 | PDF | 8 MB
In this lucid book an eminent scholar, teacher, and author takes a critical look at the nature and direction of English studies in America. Robert Scholes offers a thoughtful and witty intervention in current debates about educational and cultural values and goals, showing how English came to occupy its present place in our educational system, diagnosing the educational illness he perceives in today’s English departments, and recommending theoretical and practical changes in the field of English studies. Scholes’s position defies neat labels-it is a deeply conservative expression of the wish to preserve the best in the English tradition of verbal and textual studies, yet it is a radical argument for reconstruction of the discipline of English.The book begins by examining the history of the rapid rise of English at two American universities-Yale and Brown-at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century. Scholes argues that the subsequent fall of English-discernible today in college English departments across the United States-is the result of both cultural shifts and changes within the field of English itself. He calls for a fundamental reorientation of the discipline-away from political or highly theoretical issues, away from a specific canon of texts, and toward a canon of methods, to be used in the process of learning how to situate, compose, and read a text. He offers an eloquent proposal for a discipline based on rhetoric and the teaching of reading and writing over a broad range of literatures, a discipline that includes literariness but is not limited to it.

Reconstructing Rural Egypt Ahmed Hussein and the History of Egyptian Development

Free Download Reconstructing Rural Egypt: Ahmed Hussein and the History of Egyptian Development By Amy J. Johnson
2004 | 332 Pages | ISBN: 081563014X | PDF | 61 MB
Johnson’s book provides the rich and untold story of the architect behind Egypt’s inspired and highly successful social reform policies. The Rural Social Centers of the German-educated Ahmed Hussein were the cornerstones of his project initiatives, and these centers integrated social services through complete community participation. His programs flourished and were used as models for rural development projects worldwide. After the 1952 revolution, Hussein’s influence waned, and he refused to participate in Gamal `Abd el-Nasir’s development schemes. `Abd el-Nasr’s eventual obliteration of Hussein’s reform projects led to Hussein’s resignation. Although he never again became involved in public life, Hussein created a school of thought in Egypt that endures today. Johnson chronicles current efforts of several organizations to revive Hussein’s methods and reform agenda.

English | 2020 | pages: 448 | ISBN: 0369395255 | EPUB | 0,8 mb
Long before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the global economy, a reset to serve the wellbeing of people and the planet was plainly needed. As Australia rebuilds, after the immediate health crisis has passed, it must be with the explicit purpose of constructing an economically and ecologically sustainable world. After the Great Depression and the Second World War, economic thinking was transformed across the Anglosphere, with a determination to create a more equitable society and support every child, regardless of background, to achieve their full potential. Australia’s leaders reshaped our economy through a determined and coordinated program of post-war reconstruction. Their reforms set us up for decades of prosperity and the creation of perhaps the most prosperous and stable society on earth. With contributions from some of Australia’s most respected academics and leading thinkers, What Happens Next? sets out a progressive, reforming agenda to tackle the twin crises of climate change and inequality. It provides a framework through which our collective effort can be devoted to improving the lives of all Australians, and the sustainability of the world in which we live. Contributors include: Emma Dawson; Professor Janet McCalman AC; The Hon. Anthony Albanese MP; Thomas Mayor; Dr Liz Allen; Professor Clinton Fernandes; Dr Shireen Morris; Osmond Chiu; Michele O’Neil; Professor Fiona Stanley; Professor Mike Daube AO; and Dr Jim Chalmers.
