Rhetoric, Politics and Popularity in Pre-Revolutionary England

Free Download Rhetoric, Politics and Popularity in Pre-Revolutionary England By Markku Peltonen
2012 | 285 Pages | ISBN: 1107028299 | PDF | 3 MB
Rhetoric, Politics and Popularity in Pre-Revolutionary England provides a completely new account of the political thought and culture of Elizabethan and early Stuart England. It examines the centrality of humanist rhetoric in the pre-revolutionary educational system and its vital contribution to the political culture of the period. Humanism, Markku Peltonen argues, was crucial to the development of the participatory character of English politics as schoolboys were taught how to speak about taxation and foreign policy, liberty and tyranny. A series of case studies illustrates how pre-revolutionary Englishmen used the rhetorical tools their schoolmasters had taught them in political and parliamentary debates. The common people and the multitude were the orator’s chief audience and eloquence was often seen as a popular art. But there were also those who followed these developments with growing dismay and Peltonen examines further the ways in which populist elements in political rhetoric were questioned in pre-revolutionary England.

Blindness and Insight Essays in the Rhetoric of Contemporary Criticism Ed 2

Free Download Paul de Man, "Blindness and Insight: Essays in the Rhetoric of Contemporary Criticism Ed 2"
English | ISBN: 1138172820 | 2016 | 340 pages | EPUB, PDF | 2 MB + 7 MB
In Blindness and Insight, de Man examines several critics and finds in their writings a gap between their statements about the nature of literature and the results of their practical criticism. Not only are the critics unaware of this gap, says de Man, but their blindness to it often leads to some of their most valuable insights. The central issue of de Man’s work is the rhetorical constitution of the text, and this book, with its new introduction by Wlad Godzich and five additional essays by de Man, is meant to challenge readers to a new appreciation of their chosen task as readers of literature. Included in this new edition are the original essays on Binswanger, Poulet, Lukas, Blanchot, the New Critics, and Derrida’s `of Grammatology’, as well as five more: `The Rhetoric of Temporality’, `The Dead-End of Formalist Criticism’, `Heidegger’s Exegesis of Holderlin’, a review of Bloom’s `Anxiety of Influence, and `Literature and Language’.

Aristotle’s Rhetoric Philosophical Essays

Free Download Aristotle’s "Rhetoric": Philosophical Essays By David J. Furley; Alejandro Nehamas
2015 | 340 Pages | ISBN: 1400872871 | PDF | 26 MB
In the field of philosophy, Plato’s view of rhetoric as a potentially treacherous craft has long overshadowed Aristotle’s view, which focuses on rhetoric as an independent discipline that relates in complex ways to dialectic and logic and to ethics and moral psychology. This volume, composed of essays by internationally renowned philosophers and classicists, provides the first extensive examination of Aristotle’s Rhetoric and its subject matter in many years. One aim is to locate both Aristotle’s treatise and its subject within the more general context of his philosophical treatment of other disciplines, including moral and political theory as well as poetics. The contributors also seek to illuminate the structure of Aristotle’s own conception of rhetoric as presented in his treatise. The first section of the book, which deals with the arguments of rhetoric, contains essays by M. F. Burnyeat and Jacques Brunschwig. A section treating the status of the art of rhetoric features pieces by Eckart Schütrumpf, Jürgen Sprute, M. M. McCabe, and Glenn W. Most. Essays by John M. Cooper, Stephen Halliwell, and Jean-Louis Labarrière address topics related to rhetoric, ethics, and politics. The final section, on rhetoric and literary art, comprises essays by Alexander Nehamas and André Laks. Originally published in 1994. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
